Should be an entertaining match, I expect Portugal to win this one.
Simao with the winner in the second half of extra time after replacing Figo at the score of 2-2. Pretty excentric, huh? :p

I really hope he isn't. He's been one of our most important players. That single fact would cost Portugal the match already.

And yeah Massive, ate least Xavier won't be there. :lui:

if France play like they did against Brazil, then we'll lose....if they play like they did in round one then we have a good chance.

For Portugal, France is one of those teams we never seem to do well against, even when we play well. This WC seems to prove that history really does repeat itself, wouldn't surprise me to have a repeat result of the Euro2000 semi..

NightCrawler
03-07-2006, 03:22:AM
I still have that Euro 2000 game stuck in my throat... I think every Portuguese fan feels the same way...

In the group stage France sucked big time, they had to work hard in the game against Togo to pass. But it seems they're wide awake now. Didn't expect them overcome Spain but they did. And they manage to pass Brazil as well.

I guess Portugal's overall performance is superior. We managed to qualify the group stage with a clean sheet. We overcame Holland and still managed to pass England despite the abscence of our playmaker and all those yellows (thank you Ricardo once again...)

We will be facing a team with the best (in my view) defensive midfielders in the world Makelele and Vieira, let's not talk about Zidane's performance so far, I think he amazed everyone with those last 2 games. France also has one of the best striker duo in the World Henry and Trezeguet, I couldn't yet figure out why does Domenech bench him...

Now for our problems... Again in my view, Meira is to clumsy to play against Henry, he only needs a bit of space to score and we can't afford any mistakes. ValentO is to slow for both of France's wingers. I think Ferreira is more skilled to play against fast guys. We saw what happened to ValentO when Lennon came out...
The midfield is gonna be really hard, we need Deco in the best form possible and Costinha too, let's see what Maniche can do with a little more freedom that Petit didn't gave him in the game against England. Again we need to overcome that wall in front of the defence...
We lack a good striker... I'm quite certain that Scolari will insist in Pauleta and he stinks. Maybe he'll let Gomes play in the second half
Really hope he wont make one of those Pauleta OUT Simão IN moves even if we're winning, which we weren't against England.

Let's see what our boys can do. With a bit of luck maybe we can get there. :)

I want France to win for Zidane but I want Portugal to win for Figo :(. This is probably gonna end up going to penalties after a tight 0-0 120 minutes (reverse psychology....). I'm really hoping for a cracker though, I'm tired of all these tight games. I want Portugal to score one early, like first 10 minutes. That would get the French all attack minded and would definitely open up play.

I'll be happy with either team in the final although my likeness for Zidane is making me root for France a little bit. Good luck to both (Y)

it will certainly be a great game, two great teams
i hope portugal wins with one goal scored by figo ( he hasn't scored any goal yet (:/) )

I wouldnt want to have to play a France side in the final against a Zidane playing his last game in the World Cup final.

So true...

Well, i hope we can make some history here, but to be honest, i'm not to confident, from what i've heard (didn't had the oppurtunity to see France games) they played with Brazil like they did in Euro 2000, France 98 etc... And that's a tad scary, specially when they have Zidane on form, and Franck Ribery a rising star, their midfield is awesome... Well, i can only expect Henry, Zidane etc are not on their best day, and believe we can do it, because we will be at our best... Our players are really giving everything in the field, and that's what makes me believe the most, Deco and Costinha back is good, so we have our best midfield out there (yep, never thought i could say this). And i really hope Ronaldo and Figo are inspired...

Still, my prediction is that will be a bad game, but with a lot of emotions,

1-0 to Portugal in extra-time... Costinha with an header.

FORÇA!

INFESTA
03-07-2006, 12:54:PM
Will be our toughest game so far. We're still the underdogs of the tournament and getting few respect by our opponents and opinion-makers in general.
I don't think we're the weakest side, but being tagged as the inferior squad is an advantage, so it's all good.

France traditionally screwes us up, but having Deco and Costinha rested a whole week might be decisive here. All teams got 3 days of rest and we're already almost a month into the competition, so having 2 key midfielders in better condition is a definite plus.

I believe we can win this one again, but only by one goal.

Portugal 1-0 France

i'm very scared about this match. France improved a LOT since the group stages. i remember seeing their first game against Switzerland and afterwards against Korea, and how France sucked back then. But now they are in full strenght, with Zidane making his best performances in years and Ribery showing quality and form...geez...seems like mission impossible :X
anyway, 1-0 with Deco scoring is my prediction.

Well, I went against Portugal and they proved me wrong again. This time, for some reason, I just can't see them losing to France. I would prefer to see France in the final, but just cannot see them winning.

Portugal 1:0 France on a goal by Pauleta.

04-07-2006, 01:54:AM
With Deco back I think Portugal has a better chance than people give them credit. Their defense has been solid enough. Brazil played like the USA the other day...any good team would have gotten a result against them. Final score 1-1 to penalties where Portugal and the Great Wall that is Ricardo carries them to their first ever defeat in a World Cup Final against the Azzurri. :)

Scolari is a great coach, he'll prolly put both portoguese dmf on ZZ, whatever happens i just don't want any of our midfielders to get a yellow card, what worries me is that Portugal played 120mins and before that they had their thing with the Netherlands, if Portugal makes us go beyond the regular time i just can't see us playing well for more than 90mins and we all know Scolari isn't afraid to defend a match nul (0-0 against England and subbin Pauleta for simao).

Controlling the pace of the game will be even more important this time around.

Sepp Blatter supports a new booking system that would allow players to receive three yellow cards in a round at the World Cup before they're suspended for a match.
With record numbers of red and yellow cards handed out at this World Cup, Blatter said Tuesday it was a "very wise suggestion" to amend the existing rules that impose a one-match suspension on players who pick up two cautions across the first round or two in the knockout stage.
Two cautions in a match earns an automatic ejection and a one-match ban. Two cautions across three matches in the first round, or two in the whole knockout round, result in a one-match suspension.
"In some leagues, the suspension comes after three, four or five cautions - in the World Cup, we should go further," Blatter said. "In the future there should perhaps be three yellow cards in a round before a suspension, and this is something we will take up.
"This would avoid players in the semifinals on one yellow card who, by bad luck, may get a second and cannot play in the final."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Too late.

As much as I hate to admit it, with 11 players on yellow cards, this game is going to be as boring as hell, from the neutral prospective. Nobody will want to make any mistakes. 11 is just far too many...the life will be sucked right out of the game. Blatter should have approved of the rule and enforced it starting with the semi-finals, but I guess that wouldn't be the fair thing to do during a tournament.

Personally I think that if France wins, there is a pretty damn good chance that the one player you would want to see in the final - Zinedine Zidane - will be out due to 2 many yellow cards!

Virgo

Figo is likely to miss tomorrow's game :(

Very sad for him if he does. I know he would give it all to win this game.

Ronaldo is in doubt but is likely to start.

I'm all for the 2 yellow cards suspension but only in the group stage. Should be 3 yellow cards and suspension in the Knockout rounds.

Look at your results honestly and tell us you aren't lucky to get this far?

Angola, Mexico (10 men + penalty miss), Iran (whipping boys), Holland (Bleh.), England (10 men... Crouch up front. You don't pressure us as much as you should've. Plus Scolari drops a testicle and brings off Pauleta. And brings on Hugo Viana. :| )

that's why I said Pauleta would feel "at home".

and the lone striker thing can't be an issue, he always plays like that in the NT and usually scores.
the problem is that those goals are scored mainly against weaker teams....which says something about his quality (or lack of it).

smoove
05-07-2006, 04:33:PM
I actually think that the lone striker thing is an issue, pauleta isn't very fast and completely unable to create his own chances...his strength is of course his finishing and his shot, which he can utilize better with a second striker. but i'd never change our system, we've been playing 4-5-1 as long as I can remember...

Well Nuno Gomes can be an option if Pauleta continues to perform in Euro2004 level during the match. I for once would like to give him the benefit of the doubt since he has been instrumental in France. I know that the Championnat has nothing to with the Wc but you never know, it can have some influence since we are playing France. At least he will understand what the french players are saying and will definitely know Barthez weak points. Nuno Gomes should at least play, if not as wild card, he will get in motivated by the memories of Euro2000 (individual level) where he scored that wonderful goal.

First of all - Congrats to all the frenchies here, you guys deserved to be in the final, great defensive Display.
Second - I'm nothing but proud of my team, I couldn't care less for all you childish ****wits with your "cheater" "thug" and whatnot remarks.
I could've never dreamed of seeing my country in the last 4, there's no need to be sad in any way. We where, in my opinion, the better and more active team, we had our chances [Figo,Pauleta,Maniche etc], but the french are a deserved finalist and I wish them all the best vs. Italy.

the semis have been perfect examples of how defenders win/lose games. instead of saying totti vs zidane for the next match, might as well say thuram vs cannavaro.

It's hard to lose in a semi-final, even if you are underdog. Because the final was one step over there...

I'm proud of Portugal, but thinking we could do more...it's hard. Now we got to fight for the 3rd place. And I'm sure the players will make their best display.

Well congrats to the French but it was not convincing I have to say.
Bye bye Portugal, though I really don't like the way they play the penaltycall was bogus :| Again a ref who decides the outcome of the game it's sooooo sad at this WC but there you have it. Sure France won but that's all IMO.
Ronaldo is a great player but he has to stop with the diving everytime there's really no need for a player like him to do that (:/)
Strange game, Italy and France in the finals going to be a great game I hope.

Portugal did not play to win tonight, the drive was not there today.
France kept their heads cool with an outstanding defensive line with Thuram, Sagnol, Abidal, Vieira it was very very hard to penetrate.
So two of the best defenses will face eich other then on sunday, let's hope it will be a game for the attacking force and for us neutral fans.
Again, I was really pissed at Portugal when we lost against them but losing like this with a very doubtfull penalty with one match away from the finals is really cruel.........ah well that's football.

If carvalho wouldn't of fouled henry, he would of scored, he was completely open when he cut the ball. And plus, the only dangerous play you had was because barthez cant catch, otherwise it was hey lets shoot it from 40 yards.

Congratulations to France, in the end it was a deserved win, Portugal underperformed today, mainly because of France's defensive performance, starting in the midfield.
The fact is that in the last 3 games, we scored a single goal, this way is very hard to get too far.
Even if Portugal finishes 4th, wich is the most likely, that's very good, and certainly above my best expectations.

Well, first of, congrats to France.

Second, Scolari is a complete lunatic. Who on his right mind fields Postiga ?? Especially when needing to win.. Not that Pauleta did much all the match.. But Postiga :-puke: Deco is cleary off form. The only two players that tried hard on the attack were Figo and Ronaldo. Of course, Figo is old now and Ronaldo seen himeself between 3 french players, whenever he had he ball.
We had nothing to lose, but Scolari never takes a risk.. We finished the match with 1 striker.. It's pathetic :nape:

of course France created a lot of danger.

It was obvious that if France scored first the game would be over. Their defence and midfield is too solid for and we don't have decent strikers. Our strikers throw themselves at the ground when they see the ball pass. Can't win the game that way. Pauleta and Postiga are ridiculous.

France was better. They got their goal and then defended and played the counter attack the rest of the game. Barthez almost screwed up the whole thing for them with that attempt to save Ronaldo's shot. Zidane deserves this WC, I hope he gets it (Y). I have to say in my opinion it was a penalty although Henry made a meal out of it.

Carvalho was falling down and had no intention of touching Henry. Henry saw it and provoked the contact.

Still a penalty by the book.

Tough luck Portugal. I saw this one coming tho, ask Rui. France is a more complete team and they deserve to get there. Portugal needs a striker, and a playmaker a la Figo but younger.

By the way, that was definitely a penalty.

I didn't understand one thing though. Why did Scolari take out his lone striker Pauleta to bring in another offensive midfielder? He already had Ronaldo, Figo and Deco out there how was Simao gonna help them? Why not take out Figo or Ronaldo and bring in Nuno Gomes?

As Portugal was making that puzzling sub, Domenech took out a midfielder in Malouda and brought in another forward in Wiltord. WTF was Scolari thinking?

Lean
05-07-2006, 09:14:PM
Even tho playing with Pauleta was like playing one man down. The guy was useless the entire World Cup and he would be my last bet on anyone to score for Portugal.
