FIFA don't like giving awards to defenders. Zidane was great in the latter stages but Canna's been solid throughout.

If I'm not wrong, until today, the winner shouln't had been send off in any game.

Obviously that has changed.

Personaly, I think yesterday he f*cked anything good he had done in the previous 2 or 3 matches.

I don't understant how someone that commited such an evident agression, can be considered the best player of the competition. Being the best player requires skill and mind, and obviously his mind didn't work very well yesterday.

He could receive some nomiantion for his career, but not for the WC. Cannavaro has been the best player of the WC

Daz

The decision was made at half-time in the Final, before the whole Headbutt incident.

Cannavaro should've won it.

Zidane can at most lick Cannavaro's shoes, if that, with his perfmances in this WC. He got his 5 minutes of fame in the knockout round, scored 2 PK and wat...

Man FIFA is ****in retarded..

The only regret Zidane has at this point is not aiming at Metarazzi's face resulting in a fractured skull.

Yeah, i mean i bet Cantona's still gutted he didnt rip that fan's skull out with that kick. Bet he cries himself to sleep about it.

2 player of the year awards, 2 champions leagues, 1 world cup, 1 euro, a handful of domestic titles with Juve and Madrid and numerous other honours. Took France on his own back to the finals this year, he could have shot Meterazzi in the head and still won best player of the world cup.

but seriously though this incident will not take away his achievements, it won't even taint them. Maradonna snorted lines before going on the field during his Napolii days, doesnt take away from his achievements.

Zidane is undeserved for this award. He had only one good game alone against brazil. In the group stages he sucked. One or maybe two good games doesn't deserve the golden ball. He won on reputation alone, just like in 2003 when he won the world player of the year.

Even though I am not an Italian fan, give the award to the rightful owner Cannavaro who was consistent throughout the tournament.

It's funny how people denounce racism but also denounce reactions to racism, be it on the pitch, on the streets, or even on message boards. Zidane is human afterall.

Sir Isaac Newton wasn't wrong when he said "for every action there is a reaction, equal in magnitude and opposite in direction".

Big deal. Kahn won the the thing last time round, and was hands down the best keeper in WC2002 but made a couple of very costly blunders in the final. Ronaldo was a revelation for Brazil in 94 but couldn't produce anything when it mattered most against France.

Cannavaro was exeptional throughout the whole tournament, but I don't think he was as inspirational to his team as Zidane was to France, Zidane was a leader both on and off the pitch, he scored 3 goals and got 2 assists in the last 4 knockout games, he carried the team to the final despite that clown Domenech constantly holding them back. If you had any doubts as to how instrumental Zidane was to his team's hopes, you only needed to see the dejected looks on all the French player's faces after he got sent off, its hard to imagine the Italians reacting the same way if Cannavaro walked off. I agree that Zidane royaly messed things up at the end but don't take away from him what he's achieved in the 6.5 previous games, and 15 years of football before that.

TheBlueBalla
10-07-2006, 05:02:PM
Krypton, you make a good point. Cannavaro was simply excellent throughout, mistake free. But a defender is always going to have bias against him in an award like this.

He made a mistake, he may not have been the best person for it, but ALLEZ! all the same

Mate you're supporting the old same habit: an attacking player is always considered more decisive than a defender. To me it's absolutely nonsense. In particular talking about this WC tournament: Cannavaro's saves most of the times were more important than a goal or an assist. Italian defence in fact was the best of the tournament. :jap:

10-07-2006, 07:06:PM
ridiculous. he got it because he is retiring. we all know it.

zidane was great for like 2 or 3 games. cannavaro was brilliant for 7. go figure.

atleast no one will remember him as the player of the tournament. they will just remember as the man who got sent off for headbutting a player in the WC Final.

zidane is a legend, he is a great player, but on top of the headbutt, this really makes me dislike him more.

Cannavaro is the true legend.

I can not blame Zinedine for that action. I am sure that he had hell of a reason to do that. Though, it is faith. When you see what he did through his career, you will notice that he was at the right place at the right time, and when it was most important.
He did just that in this final, but this time, it was time to go.

He made us happy for twelve glorious years, we had a privilege to enjoy every single move of one of the glorious athletes in history of sport. What he took from himself to prove that he is one of the best, if not the best footballer, now must repay to his children and family.

I can not thank enough to Zinedine Zidane.

Golden Ball: Zidane (2,012 points)
Silver Ball: Fabio Cannavaro (1,977)
Bronze Ball: Andrea Pirlo (715)

Cannavaro didn't lose by much if that is any consolation.

But Sunday was still a final reminder of the human frailty of a player who so often looked like he was from another planet

He's always going to be my hero regardless of the incident or not. Zidane was the first player I saw when I started watching football. I caught the replay of an amazing goal he scored while I was flipping channels and I decided to keep it on and watch. That one moment launched me into the crazed player and fan I am today. I think he deserves that ball for putting his team on his back and carrying them into the finals. Without him Les Bleus wouldn't have made it that far. I'll miss you Zizou.

he is already one of the greatest of all time. He is up there with Maradonna no doubt. Just check in his trophy cabinet. And its all in modern football. IF, he lifted the world cup last night it wouldn't be a point to argue. But, he is human like all of us. I'm sure the nipple pinching, shirt grabbing, taunting, and general jackassness would get to any of us. We just have the luxury of not having the whole world looking at our every move.

That's the true ugliness of the situation... He absolutely blessed the fields he played on his with his grace and uncanny skill, but his final moment is a disguisting moment, everyone knows the expression,"I just can't get my words to explain it" is the best way to put it... This may actually bring him out of retirement with Real to fix his image a bit...
