WAYNE ROONEY has confessed he tried to get Cristiano Ronaldo booked during England's World Cup clash with Portugal.

Ronaldo was widely condemned for demanding that referee Horacio Elizondo take action against Manchester United team-mate Rooney after he stamped on Ricardo Carvalho.

But Rooney said: "There's no problem between me and Cristiano. He wasn't the only Portugal player to run over to the referee and ask for the red card.

"I have to be honest and admit that there was an incident in the first half when I asked the referee to book Ronaldo because he had dived.

"The only difference is that what I did went unnoticed by everyone."
