My first season with Köln was a great success. What a season it was, this was the league table before the last matchday: Everything could still happen, 6 teams could still relegate, and I was in a battle with Frankfurt for the third place.

I again had a great home run, winning from basically everyone including Bayern (3-1), Werder Bremen (3-2) and Schalke (3-0). Only HSV and Hannover managed to win at my own stadium.

On the last day it was pretty soon obvious i would get the third spot. HSV beat Frankfurt comfortably: 5-0. I had to visit nr.17 Bielefeld. They dominated the match, but I scored from a counter and in the last minute when their goalie was upfront: 0-2. CL is mine.

Also surprising: Kaiserlautern and 1860 Munchen relegated to the regional liga.

Finally back to FM after a month and a bit of break. Started with Fisher Athletic in Conference South and with only a basic tactic set up at the start of the season and a couple of minor signings I got promoted. Pretty much knocked the season out in one day, possibly the most enjoyable and entertaining season of FM I've played since the name change and definitely much better than several seasons of endless signigns and painful minor tactical alterations in my previous Napoli game (:nape:).

2008 Olympic Games, managing Portugal, had to win since I lost 2-3 to Italy in the first round. Fernandes open the score to me but Carriço manages to get a red card and 3 argentinian goals in less than 10 minutes killed my hopes. To get even worse, Nani picked up his second yellow card and left me with a defensive formation and only 9 men. But out of nothing, my team managed to score 4 goals in 15 minutes and we won =)

So I made some nice singing's this season, with all of them being English. I hope to have an all English squad soon. My best singing's were that of Glen Johnsen and Wayne Bridge. So the CL qualifier puts me against Milan, instantly I thought I was out of it before it even began. So the first match at the San Siro is a suprise 0-0 ending, a very boring match with few chances. Than comes the return match, Kevin Davies is on fire and scores 3 goals to put me ahead by 3 than all of a sudden Kaka scores 2 late goals and I almost **** myself but in the end I somehow managed to beat them:rockman:

I watched them take about 25 shots on the highlights, and then I look up and see 121:30 and I'm just like "BLOW THE WHISTLE!!!!" and of course right then Rosicky scores a 30 yarder. BOOOOOOOOO. Agreed. I bought him for a couple seasons and sold him(don't ask why) and in all of his seasons either on my team or others he has ratings in the high 7s.

And the best part is that Udinese don't rate him. You can't get him for a lower club, but if you're on a club with 7M Euros to spend on a striker, he's yours.

Thats pretty hard to do in FM, you usually let in alot of goals that way. An amazing attack usually works better.

I don't know, Sheffield United seem to have the perfect tactic to score in the first 10 minutes against me, and then prevent any highlights for the rest of the game. I blame Tom.

I find the games difficulty differs based on your teams reputation. If mid high its pretty annoying with small teams who manage to get Xs & Ds (using perfect FM terminology ey? (H)!!) When its low its not too hard (if your team is actually good that is) and when its too high they just wait behind in order to... concede :p Not a perfectly accurate explanation but its something that you have to actually play the game for a few seasons in order to fully understand how it works. Also i find that the game is having trouble cracking a tactic when you make changes in every game based on who your opponent is instead of just using one generic tactic for every team (like I once used to in the CM days) Tho sometimes im just too bored to do that and I just go the generic way :p

I always play with my own tactic with Sporting Lisbon, whoever is the opponent. Of course I do some minor changes for every match, but only around 5/10% of the cases they are positional ones (for CL 1/8 and beyond games, for examples). It's a 4-1-2-2-1, with two wingers, almost sounds like a 4-3-3. Some games just go better than others, but the opponent cracking the tactic, never happened to me on FM 2006. On older editions, I had to make a new tactic almost every season.

Also, if you know the game well, a minor change like ordering your DM to help the CB the most can make a difference in a match. It's all about minor changes...but the correct ones.

In my latest game I've used the same downloaded tactic for 5 years now. Although for really tough games I switch to the "cautious" version and it hasn't gotten cracked.

My favorite game ever was managing Brazil with a tactic that I think would work great at Barcelona as well. I basically just had Kaka and Ronaldinho with full creative freedom (Dinho on the left, Kaka in the middle) and the fullbacks making LONG runs up front. I only defended with like 3 players, but all my opponents were so intimidated by my attacking, it never made any difference.

My style is very similar to yours, I tend to use either of these two: 3-1-1-3-2 which always works great, as long as the DM is good, and I tend to invest in them the most, so that's alright. I used the wings mostly with the MC/AMC dictating the game, the ST's are usually those who could play on the wings as well, so they tend to go the wings and help get the pass in.

Or, a 3-2-1-2-2/3-2-1-3-1, with the wingbacks making long runs to help in attack. Works wonders, last game I used this one, I got about 150+ goals in the league alone, conceding less than 10, and with no red cards all season, in all competitions. Dunno if that has anything to do though, could simply be exceptional defenders.

BTW, has anyone else noticed that the DM's and wingbacks tend to get the highest ratings? Does anyone why that segment of the playing field is so important? I mean, when using wingers, they rarely do much in defense, but are quite involved in creation, whilst I can't even tell were the DM's are. Which is what their purpose is, I guess.

I actually just used two center backs and then a destroyer as my defenders, everyone else was pretty much exclusively attack minded.

Dinho on the left flank and Kaka as the MC, then someone like Lucas or Gilberto Silva as the DM worked like a charm. I find Determination is one of the most underrated stats for a DM or MC because guys with high determination tend to chase the ball all over the park and make life difficult for the other team's central mids. Obviously positioning and tackling are important too. I've found that passing doesn't really matter at all for a DM as well.

My basis is always 4-2-2 with a diamond formation on the midfield. The key in this tactic lies in the DMC and AMC who both have to be very versatile. If that is the case, I can vary with this tactic from extremely attacking to extremely defending.

Like I said, I think the key to this tactic is forcing every opponent to fear you. If you have the right players, I think this can be the best tactic in the game, because even on the road, the other team starts off on its heals trying to keep you from putting away an early goal. Any tactic can win with Real Madrid, but this can DOMINATE with Real Madrid.

Make sure your strikers can finish, jump, and head. Then watch Ronaldinho and Messi repeatedly beat the wing backs and swing in cross after cross after cross.

When I click "continue", the game just proceeds with all the results simulations and stuff, and news items popping up, including other teams making offers and such. But the continuation doesn't stop for a few days, and sometimes I miss the offers because it doesn't stop and I can't respond to it. I'm not on holiday or anything. How do I pause the progress and respond to the news items?

What a recovery. Reminds of one against Paços with Sporting. Losing 2-0, I put everyone upfront, I scored in 88' and 90'. Overtime and Djaló scored in the 2nd half of the OT to put me in the next round. I almost had an heart attack through the game.

They should put that on the box next time: FM is not good for your heart, lol. :)

Try 4-0 for you, against a worse team, 75th minute, redcarded keeper after 2 injuries earlier, having made another substitution. Not really heart, more so blood pressure. Lost 4-6, last two goals were penalties casused by yet another reckless keeper.

I would have put everyone in the back, waste time on max, super defensive, long balls, no forward runs, etc, etc...you can't lose 6-4 in 15 min that way. I actually manage to snatch draws and impossible wins doing this.

Minute 80, winning 1-0 against Barcelona at their home with 1 shot on target against 7 of them. Everyone in the back. Suffered, but the keeper didn't make a single defense in those minutes (still they had a ball in the bar). Just one example. One of the best victories everrrrr (H)

It was a crappy team, and I was up 4-0, on a return match, home, when I had won the previous one. I put on all my subs except a defender, a mid, and a striker. I subbed the defender for a mid, and left 3 at the back, subbing my mid, a DM, for another striker. The the best player on the field, the striker who bagged 3 goals, get injured. Afdter that it was the keeper incident.

I pride myself in never having used a defensive or timewasting tactic. It can be foolish, but I like thniking that I play entertaining football and that I don't concede because the entire team is good, and not just some defensive crap paying off. Frankly, since I still went through, it's just a good story. Only time I ever conceded more than 3 goals. This is why I hate eccentric keepers, though. Cech was great, solid in every game, less than 10 goals in 3 seasons straight, playing 100+ matches. then in comes this 18 year old 'promising' talent from the youth system and he ruins everything.

Ironically, in the following transfer period, that team expressed their interest for the keeper, and I loaned him. After 3 years of consecutive loans, the guy returns, and steals the Cech's place (who would be retiring soon), first match, somehow misconstrudes Terry's intentions and lets in his pass. After that he's been good, though.

Klose on a free in 08. Gattuso and Dani Alves were transfer listed by request, 25 and 23 million each respectively. Borowski was 10 million. I paid all of them in monthly installments. I haven't made any profit in this game, but who cares, the TV money pays for my transfers (H) And yes, I'm in the red.

So I started a new game with Racing, in my first season I sold a lot of players to get some money in ( got 11 million pounds in total ) and I bought no-one in. Media was predicting me to finish in 19th place but I ended it in 9th so that was good for me.

In my second season bough in a couple free players and others that cost a good amount ( my best buying being a transfer listed Giuly at Barca for only 2.4 million pounds ). Did a rather horrible job selling players though, only got like 1.5 million pounds in.

Here is my squad with stats, Zigic is great so far(Y). Giuly is already leaving me, I got a good offer from Valencia and he was whining about getting more money which I could not offer him so I decided to cash in on him while I could.

Yea, the first team is not bad ( other than not having a good LB and my only good CB is Garay...the other one makes too many mistakes that have cost me quite a bit of points ) but if one of the more important players go down to an injury than I am in trouble. It's not even funny how the performance of the team drops but so far the team has been doing good and next season I should have an even better squad.

It's tough.... the board is incredibly short-sighted. For example I have another two years on a <200k pound a year sponsorship deal.... and I'm in IT Cup (if anyone cares, I had to play the last game again.. ended up 6th because Ipswich lost their final game this time, top 3 and Chelsea - champions - in the CL, Ipswich, Charlton, Norwich in UEFA). A couple of times they FORCED me to accept offers for my better players (though 4.5 million pounds for 2 League One players wasn't bad), which sort of sucks.

A huge problem was also that the stadium size always lagged behind where the club was. I was in League One with a sub-5000 stadium, Championship with a sub-10000 stadium, even now it's just a 17,7xx seater. It meant that a competitive side makes the finances a problem. Luckily I always had a supply of insanely good young players (just as an aside, scouting honestly feels like cheating now...... European u19 Championship and "UK/Ireland" search and I bought out a whole bunch of dirt cheap 6-star potential players who became very good). Without the ~13 million I made from transfers before I even got to the Premier League the club would have been very much screwed.

Reputation was the biggest problem. My squad, even right now, has an average age of 23. I'd have a whole bunch of high-potential young players and there'd always be interest from big clubs, and my players would inevitably want to leave. There was one point in my first EPL season where of my 15 rotation players about 10 were either wanting to leave, attracting interest from every 'big' club in the world or handing in transfer requests. Hopefully the reputation will catch up to the club's status soon.

I have the same reputation problem, but i just won the UCL 3-2 over chelsea, Soren Larsen scored in the 122nd minute (H), so hopefully i should be able to hold onto my better players.

Definitely the best skin out of the box. 08 and 09 versions sucked big time.

The FM 08/09 version isn't that bad IMO. I mean not as worse as the FM 05/06 one which just screwed my eyes and I had to go looking for a custom skin immediatly.

I thought CM 4 was the worst.
