About Merson. He is too old, and Man Utd have Scholes at AM, and a new Dutch striker they just bought for 19M, where ever you heard this rumor is the dummest place ever. I can make up better rumors.

Merson would be a great buy for United. He was one of the best players in the EPL for the first half of the season - just look at the goal he scored against Everton. What if Scholes gets injured? Of course, United never have more than two of their top players injured at one time. Lucky bastards.. :)

Merson is still better than the massively overrated Nicky Butt, and I think he could do a job similar to what Gary McAllister did for Liverpool..and for that reason I'm glad none of the United fans want him and I hope he stays at Villa.

Btw, congrats, both the Nevilles have been signed to new long term contracts. Phil Neville will be at United until he's 30. LOL

Nicky Butt is a pile of sh!t, all he does is run around and foul people - watch the Mexico game again. The only reason he's in the England squad is because he plays for United (same for Phil Neville), if he played for Middlesborough you'd never hear of him. Merson on the other hand would bring so much more to the team, he'll bring veteran leadership as well as attacking flair - Nicky Butt brings NOTHING.

Just some EPL stats:

Nicky Butt: 3 goals 1 assist
Paul Merson: 6 goals 5 assists

Nicky Butt plays alongside Beckham, Giggs, Keane and Cole. Merson has had to play alongside Boateng, Dublin and that retard Ginola. B

Anyways, like I said I'm glad you lot don't rate him because I think he'd do an amazing job for you, especially coming on as a sub or when there are injures - just like Gary McAllister did for Liverpool.

Butt is no Roy Keane or Paul Scholes, and that is why he has such poor stats, because he is not a first choice midfielder. With Giggs, Beckham, Keane, and Scholes, why should he be. He soon definitely will be out of the England squad, along with Phillip Neville, as England continue to experiment with players like Gerrard, Dyer, Ashley Cole, etc. He is still one of the better midfielders in the premiership, and even if he were playing for boro, provided he had the same training throughout his career, we would be hearing about him.

No need to appologize Nimreitz, but I'm surprised people feel this way about a player who's so unbeliveably mediocre.

As for his poor stats being from lack of games:

Butt: 24 matches - 3 goals 1 assist
That's a goal or an assist every 6 games! This is a guy who can set up Scholes, Cole, Yorke, Sheringham and Solsjkaer.

Merson: 38 matches - 6 goals, 5 assists
That's a goal or an assist every 3.5 games - and who does Merson have to set up? Darrius Vassel, Joachim and Dublin? Who passes to Merson? Ginola (hardly), Hendrie, Boating.

Don't compare Merson and Gazza, Gazza is nothing now. Merson on the other hand carried Villa this season and they would have been in relagation trouble if it wasn't for him. Just go back and watch some of his performances, if it wasn't for our over-abundance of midfielders at Liverpool I'd love to see Merse play for us. I can't say the same about Nicky Butt.

Speaking of Butt being a top prospect - what about Danny Murphy? In the Premiership ALONE he has 4 goals and 3 assists in just 13 games! Not to mention a ton of timely goals and assists in the domestic and UEFA cup competitions. He can also play anywhere in the midfield (centre, left or right). But that said, I don't think he should be an England regular - but I at least think he deserves a spot in the squad over someone who's done absolutely NOTHING like Nicky Butt.

To be fair though, I could say the same thing about Joe Cole and Michael Carrick who, if they were HALF as good as the hype surrounding them, would have brought West Ham a hell of a lot higher in the EPL than 15th (below Middlesborough for God's sake!). There's no doubt Carrick and Cole are EXCELLENT prospects and will probably turn out to be brilliant, but right now they're not nearly as good as everyone makes them out to be.

Now watch Joe Cole go and score the winner against Greece...... :)

No No No, Merson is defenitely NOT better than Nicky Butt, the only thing in which Merson is better than Butt is his surname :)

I actually never saw what the big deal about Hargreaves was anyways. He played two CL games and didn't get one shot or cross off. Butt is better, but definitely not great.

I love Murphy though, I remember when I was watching the week's highlights and there was a cross into the box knocked out to the top right corner of the box to Murphy and he hit a brilliant volley into the net. It was amazing! Naturally I am biased because he carried my Liverpool squad to 3 EPL titles in 4 years in CM 00/01 :)

But much like in CM, you have to plan for the future. If you buy great old players, eventually they run out of gas and the team plummits. For Villa, I say hold on to him as long as he is performing well. Anyone else shouldn't buy him.

well, every team need a experience player to keep the player together.. player like merson, macallister and sheringham are all important player that can turn a match all around.. even in CM as well...
