View Full Version : Xavier set for Middlesbrough deal
PaPaGeorGeo 03-11-2006, 11:13:AM Abel Xavier is close to agreeing a contract with Middlesbrough after serving a 12-month drugs ban.
He was suspended after testing positive for a performance-enhancing steroid dianabol after Boro's Uefa Cup trip to Xanthi in September 2005.
But the 33-year-old Portugal defender has played two reserve games and is now set to get a permanent contract.
Boro manager Gareth Southgate said: "He's getting stronger and I think it's a position where we need some cover."
Southgate added: "His experience and enthusiasm have been a real plus around the place. He's popular with the guys here and he's got a point to prove."
Xavier, who joined Middlesbrough from AS Roma in August last year, became the first Premier League player to be banned for doping when he failed a drugs test.
Originally banned for 18 months, his suspension was cut to 12 months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in July.
Born in Mozambique, Xavier has played 20 times for Portugal and had spells with Benfica, Bari, PSV Eindhoven, Everton and Liverpool.

Oz_Leeds_Fan 03-11-2006, 12:09:PM Fair play to him...cant remember exactly what it was he was proven to have taken but he's done his time and if he has maintained the devotion to keep himself maintained during his break with a view to continue playing then i see no reason why he should not have the oppertunity to do so.

I'm sure he'd be better if he was turkish though.
Vinnie Jones 03-11-2006, 03:21:PM Canīt believe clubs still sign him...will never forgive him for screwing up in the semi final of the Euro2000. Abel Xavier burn in hell or sign for Fenerbahce.

Zlatan 03-11-2006, 06:52:PM I'd rate him high if there was a bad hairstyle competition, that's for sure.

Tiago_10 03-11-2006, 07:29:PM Abel Xavier is a legend but certainly not because of his football skills.
CapaJr 03-11-2006, 08:51:PM when he was in Istanbul, all he did was to party at nightclubs. i personally saw him regularly at a club called Reina, he was always with hot chicks.
Filipower 03-11-2006, 08:57:PM just put him beside Huntelaar, everybody plays great:(

::shinji:: 03-11-2006, 09:21:PM he'd be a cult hero in MLS!

Or another Turkish club for that matter. And I feel the same about Abel and the Euro2000.

Likewise, I can't be harsh on you either. I mean, your name is 'cus'! How awesome is that, uh?
Btw, 'cus' is plural, right? It's a bit weird calling you a plural name. Can I call you just 'cu'? :)
