I might be able to help you. Let me ask you something first... do you have all the addons for FIFA 2001 if you downloaded from a site, or you just have the game without commentary and movies?
If you do not have any addons such as the movies or commentaries, your game won't work properly. I also had the same problem. I started the World Cup, and played the first 2 games in the group, but when the 3rd game was loading, it went back to Windows.
Ok, here is what you need to do:

There, you should find a movie, commentary, and announcer addon for FIFA 2001 warez version. You got to have a Freedrive.com account in order to get this files. But there is another place with this addons: http://www.sphinks.com/warezimpact/addons.shtml
But I think that the 22nd ZIP file for the commentary addon is downloadable but you can't extract from it, but from the first site mentioned, you can directly download the ACE file instead of downloading a ZIP with an ACE in it, but remember, get a Freedrive.com account in order to login.
You can also get the commentary files at: http://www.stereozonic.com
At this site, there is only commentary addon, and it is in RAR format, instead of ACE, so you would need WinRAR to extract it.
I SUGGEST YOU GET THE MOVIE AND ANNOUNCE ADDON FROM THE 2ND SITE MENTIONED, AND THE COMMENTARY FROM THE 1ST (THE FREEDRIVE ONE.)
To install the movie addon, you'll need to extract the stuff from all ACE files to the directory ...data/video
To install the announce and commentary addon (I don't know about the RAR format, because I got the ACE format with me), you'll need to extract the stuff from both the announce ACE files and the commentary ACE files to the FIFA2000 directory. They should automatically go to the folder data, and create a new folder called spc, where all commentary and announcements files would be found.
