Also, not sure about Danes and Icelanders, but during the czar times Russia was not on the same level as Spain, Portugal, England.... Still, in 1390 we got annexed to Han of Mongolia I think, and in 1490 we got our independence again...... So, Russia during the middle ages struggled more than anyone and Swedes in particular invaded us many times.... there was a czar, though, Peter the Great, the guy who built St. Petersburg, he defeated Swedes somewhere near Poltava...

So, really, Stalin said in 1920's "we are behind those nations for 50 years. We must get even in 10 years", that is why communism became so popular.....

also, Germany made one single mistake (Napoleon made the same one in 1812) -- they invaded Russia and even decided to sturm us during winter......... Their fuel got frozen ad the soldiers themselves got froze... You should know what I am talking about -- scandinavian countries are pretty cold...
