I support the Mighty Spurs.

Our situation, in goal, defence, midfield and attack, complete with smart transfers. LOOK GLENN!

GOAL
Neil Sullivan is one of the best goalies in the EPL. Kasey Keller is fabulous backup and Shwan Jalal looks like a very promising youngster, only 18. Rating: 9

DEFENCE
Sol is gone. I really don't care. Ledley King, Gary Doherty and Goran Bunjevcevic are all amazing central defenders. Brilliant backup in Alton Thelwell, Anthony Gardner and Chris Perry. Carr and Ziege are both brilliant wingbacks, and Taricco is decent cover should either be injured or suspended. Rating: 10

MIDFIELD
Should Anderton have an injury free year, he'll be in contention for an international callup. Poyet is one of the best passers in the game, is brilliant in the air and can score a lot of goals. Davies, Clemence and Etherington are our top notch youngsters. Freund, Leonharsen and Sherwood fit into into the "silly old get" category. Korsten could be our secret weapon. Rating: 7

ATTACK
Rebrov has disappointed and always seems to blow decent chances. Sheringham and Ferdinand are great for their motivation and leadership but are inconsistent. Injuries have robbed Steffen Iversen off all the talent he once had. Armstrong is ****e and Kamanan is a hot prospect for the future.
Rating: 6

The Mighty Red Devils. (Man Utd)

GoalKeepers: The best keeper in the world Fabien Barthez, the ever reliable Raimond Van Der Gouw, promising youngster Roy Carroll and Paul Rachubka.

Defence: Our strongest defensive pairing is Jaap Stam and Wes Brown, with Ronny Johnsen and David May recovering from injuries, our backup is a little poor. On the left, the ever reliable Dennis Irwin or French international Mikael Silvestre, on the right we have the Neville brothers who are going through a loss of form. As Fulham demonstrated Sunday, Our defence is the weak link. And Sir Alex would do well to add some re-enforcements.

Midfield: If defence is the weakest link, then our midfield is the strongest. In the centre we have our inspirational leader Roy Keane partnered with the incredible Juan Sebastian (Seba) Veron, with Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes able to replace either effectively. On the wings we have arguably the best two wingers in the world. Ryan Giggs who posseses the ability to tie even the best defenders in knots, and David Beckham who can put a football on any given spot on the pitch. Also youngsters Luke Chadwick and Bojan Djordijc are ones to watch out for.

Attack: Another treasure trove of talent, led this season by free scoring Ruud van Nisterooy, paired with either Paul Scholes, Dwight Yorke, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or the much maligned Andy Cole. United don't have trouble hitting the net.

Overall: Our troubles this season seem to be in defence, though at the moment we are scoring more than we let in, it's not a good idea to keep this style going, and a re think in defence seems to be the only answer. Gary Neville is not the ideal partner for Jaap Stam, Wes Brown however could be.

Reccomended players to be added:

Roberto Ayala,
Kevin Hoffland,
Marcel Desailly (wants to leave Chelsea, apparently)

Mike.

FC Bayern München

The most unified team in the world, and the best team in the world have a near perfect squad for the European Cup defence.

Goalkeepers: In goal is the greatest keeper in the game today, Oliver Kahn. He very rarely misses a game, and is a natural shot stopper. He came to Bayern in 1992, and still holds the record for highest transfer fee paid for a keeper in germany, at 1.6 pounds. rating: 10

Defence: A great group of players here. Bayern usually plays with three at the back, and two withdrawn wingers. With the addition of Robert Kovac in the off season, the defence looks very strong again this year. The loss of Patrik Andersson doesn't seem to be a major problem. Kovac, Kuffour, and Linke should form a great bond at the back, and the wingers, Sagnol and Lizerazu are the starters at the same position for European and World Champions France. rating: 8

Midfielders: Truely a stacked midfield. In the defensive midfield roles there are tons of players capable of stepping in. Niko Kovac and Pablo Thiam come to the club this season, and add extra depth to the club. Names like Hargreaves, Effenberg, Scholl, Cforza, Tarnat, Fink, Jeremies, and Salihamidzic line the midfield with great skill, and massive experience.rating: 9

Forwards: When you look at the list of these guys there isn't one weakness. Elber, Pizzaro, Zickler, Santa Cruz, Paolo Sergio, and Janker all are world class. In fact, any combination of these players can produce a flurry of goals, but also posess with the midfield, in Bayern's traditional style.rating: 10

Recomended transfers:

none

Out
Cforza

FC Porto

Goalkeepers:
Ovchinikov, Espinha and Vitor Baia

Not the brightest spot in the team, Altough Ovchinikov is a competent keeper. Espinha is getting old, and IMHO should have NEVER been hired. Vitor Baia is finished.

There is also room for Bruno Vale and Zé Eduardo, from the youth team. Promising.

Defense:
Left: Mário Silva / Rubens Jr.
Center: Jorge Costa and Jorge Andrade / Ricardo Silva and Ricardo Carvalho
Right: Ibarra / Secretário

The most improved section from last year. Last year Porto had lots of problems with the left side (Esquerdinha - moved to Zaragoza and Rubens Jr.), mostly physical, and Nélson played most of the season. However Mário Silva is showing he is a real "Dragão", and performed very well on almost all games so far. Rubens looks more focused on football than on karaoke this season.
The center suffered the retirement of Aloisio, one of the best CD in Portugal EVER, but his place won't be empty, as Jorge Andrade will be one strong choice (with Beto from Sporting) to replace Couto. The second line is very young, and very good either. Porto won't lose games for them...
The right side was where Porto most spend money, buying Hugo Ibarra. He didn't performed up to his cost, but he's improving. The second choice is still Secretário :p

Midfield
Defensive: Paredes, Costinha (da Costa), Soderstrom and Paulinho
Attacking: Deco, Alenitchev, Ricardo Sousa and Rafael

The defensive midfield has too many players, however Paredes and Soderstrom have proven to be top choices. Paredes is suffering from physical problems, and is being replaced by Costinha, who was sent off in the first game, but made a top performance against Boavista for thr 4-1 result. Paulinho is a 4th choice, and is a symbol of the club, like Jorge Costa.
The attacking midfield looks to suffer from the "Deco addiction". Without him (Sporting and most of the grashoppers @ home) the team can't play. Alenitchev seems set to return to russia, while Rafael don't fit in the team. The second choice seems to be Ricardo Sousa... but he is set to return to Beira Mar.

Attack:
Left: Clayton, Paulo Costa
Center: Pena, Postiga
Right: Capucho, Candido Costa

IMHO Porto needs a good striker, or take a chance on Postiga, who already scored two great goals (the tying goal against Grashoppers and the 4th against Boavista). The right side is well, Capucho and CC are two top players, while Clayton and Paulo Costa (bought from Reginna/Inter) are option for the left side.

AFC Ajax Amsterdam
--------------------------
They've won the Champions League 4 times[last time in 95], they've won the World cup 2 times, they've won the Dutch league 27 times, anyway, if you put all the big prizes together, you get to the amazing number of 73 titles! That makes Ajax one of the best teams in the world. And ofcorse the great players that have started at Ajax. Cruijff, van Basten, Bergkamp, Kluivert, Davids, Overmars.. It's just a good-players-creating-machine. At this moment Ajax isn't thát well, but they seem to be getting back on track again. After having some good victory's this season against Liverpool and Celtic. The defence is lookin ok again. No that Ferdi Vierklau is back, we have a great defender back. I think Chivu is just a great player. Just looking at the fact that he is the captain of the national team of Romania sais enough. The midfield is pretty ok. Rafael van der Vaart is the best player of Ajax at the moment, He's a great young midfielder, I'm sure he will be in the Dutch national squad in the future. They just bought Zlatan Ibrahimovic for a lot of money, I hope he can help Ajax winning the Dutch League. But the best player that Ajax has bought I think is Mido. I don't think Ajax will win the league this year. I think it will be VERY close betweeen Feyenoord and PSV, I think Feyenoord will win it. But if Ajax playes in the UEFA cup the way the played against Liverpool, they can come very far.

Silencer
23-08-2001, 02:27:AM
Yeah I second that, AJAX, they are at their best when they play away from home like you saw tonight against Celtic.
Much young and talented players, not quite ready for the CL but give it a year (or two) and they will be ready!

I support Galatasaray. Their symbol is a LION. The first and the last :D Turkish team to win UEFA and the Super Cup. Gala had the super star HAGI for 4 year. Have qualified to the Champions League 6 times in the 90s. Lately gala have performed well in the UEFA Challenge games, for the past few years gala beat teams like Arsenal, Leeds, Milan, Bologna, PSG, Deportivo, Dortmund, Real Mallorca, Real Madrid, AC Monaco, but this year they r in trouble cause of a brand new team out there.

So here's the list of first names I know maybe someone like Nistelrooy or Silencer can give you the rest.
Petri Pasanen
Cristian Chivu
Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Heart Of Midlothian FC

Goalkeeping:
Antti Niemi in that position says it all really with Roddy McKenzie as adequate back up
Rate:10

Defence:

Our Scottish Internationalist Steven Pressley is a very consistent defender and Always in the first 3 names on the team sheet.Scott Severin has blossomed through the ranks into an able player who puts 110% in every challenge.Austrian international Thomas Flogel is very very versatile and seems to play as good as ever in any position.Stepahne Mahe from what i've seen of him looks ok and seems to give the right wingers dificulty getting the balls in.However,The backup,is how the chinese say ''borrocks'' in robbie neilson and Austin McCann.and that loses marks.the only decent young player is Andy Webster
Mark: 7

Midfeild:

Colin Cameron on his day can give ANY defence major problems(just ask the Croatians) Stevie Fulton as fat and ugly as he may be is the best passer on our team.Robert Tomaschek for the first year was crap but for last season really improved since Craig Levein took over and was the 2nd best player on our team(behind Niemi).Simmons is our newest product off our Youth system (which has produced so many stars)and looks like he will mature and become our next star.ex-barca player Juanjo is very unpredictable but a fans favourite and has scored some of the best goals i've ever seen at Tynie in recent years.
rating:8

Attack:
Canadian Kevin McKenna who has been moved up front as a target man and to knock balls down to Kirk and Wales.he did an excelent job on sat.
Kirk and Wales have just struck up a partnership which looks promising along with McKenna adding some prescense to the forward line BUT Adam is excellent when fit but too injury prone and McSwegan is fatter than fulton

Soderstrom: This is the first time I hear that Alenichev is going to Russia. However when Porto was still in a race for Jardel's signing, there was a chance that Porto will also send Alenichev to Galatasaray along with money. And Alenichev said in an interview that he would agree to move to Istambul because the World Cup is not that far away and he needs to have a lot of match practice in order to get in the Russian team, as the new Porto manager doesn't seem to have Dmitri is his plans.. I would be glad if he would return, though..

I'll examine Spartak Moscow, although I don't really support them (when it comes to Europe - yes, but in the local Russian league I actually could care less). But I am not going to rate some team from Sh*tsk, Siberia that nobody here ever heard off..

Sssso, let's begin.

GOALKEEPING

Now with Russia's 2nd choice keeper Filimonov gone to Dinamo Kyiv, there are three competent keepers in Spartak now: LevitskyUkraine international, their 1st-2nd choice keeper), Ristovic[/] (Yugoslavian) and [I]Guso (Bosnian internaional). not bad, I say, considering that Levitsky is a good, solid keeper who is a clear no.1 in white-red uniform. Overall, out of 10 -- 8

DEFENCE

As surprising as it may sound (for Russians, at least), Spartak's defense is better than ever. It should be one of the strongest assets Spartak will have in order for them to succeed in the CL. Spartak have: Mitreski (Macedonian international, Bayern and Arsenal wanted to sign him for about 10 million pound, but he wasn't sold because he only joined the club just this winter), Parfenov (Ukrainian international, gets a few calls to Ukraine's main team, time to time), Kovtun (very undsisciplined, but a solid defender who has the best heading ability mongst defenders in Russia. Occasionally plays for Russia), Tchuisse (Cameroonian international with Russian passport. Started out for an amateur club in Russia, then joined Chernomorets Novorossiisk, and then Spartak a year ago. Very physical defender, rock solid, who usually plays on the left of the defense. Sometimes joins the offense. Very strong.), Kebe (Just joined the team, Senegalian international. Still young, at 23, extremely talented. Watch out for him next year in Korea/Japan. Romantsev thinks highly of him.), Ananko (a solid backup, played well in the CL last year as a sweeper), Stemenovski (Macedonian Under-21. Know little about him, supposed to have a good talent). Overall, out of 10 -- 8.5

MIDFIELD

Midfield is Russia's strongest assets, and it was Spartak's strongest asset too, for years. In the midfield, for Spartak, play Titov (a superstar of our own, attacking midfielder), Bulatov (a solid defensive midfielder, also Russia's international), Tsikhmeistruk (once a Shakhtar Donetsk property, played on loan in Bulgaria last season and was Bulgarian league player of the year. A winger with wheels, good signing from Shakhtar. Ukrainian, yet not in Ukraine's national team), Baranov (a shaky right-midfielder from Belarus. Didn't play well last year, doesn't seem to impress this year, but is still a regular member of the first team squad. Plays for Belarus international team.), Bezrodny (a young Russian, once was in Bayer Leverkusen's youth squad, but never seemed to impress there. He did impress last year in Spartak, this year is filled with injuries), Kalinichenko (a young attacking midfielder from Ukraine, who with Bezrdony impressed last year, and now also injured, and, as it seems, for the rest of the season. Talented.), Pavlenko (16-year old Ukrainian, just played a game for Spartak. Before signing with SM this summer he played somewhere in Swtizerland). Overall, out of 10 -- 7

OFFENSE

Offense always has been questionable in Spartak organization. Lately it has become dependent on Titov -- the guy who can pass, and pass pretty well. When he's hot - the team thrives. When he's cold - you don't want him on the field. He has been on cold streak this spring, and offense was Spartak's weakest asset because of that. Attackers for Spartak are: Robson (a Brazilian strikers who has adapted to Russian lifestyle for the 4-5 years he has been with the club. A streakiest player in Spartak's uniform -- when he's hot, you want him there, when he's cold, you don't want him there. Depends heavily on Titov's playmaking skills), Bestchastnykh (Russia's main striker who has been treated unfairly in Racing Santader. There he didn't even play regurarily, however when he has been called in Russia's first team, he has been able to score; Racing's supporters were furious with the decisions of Racing's managment to keep Bestchastnykh off the first team. Had a few good seasons in Werder Bremen and in Santader, though. Still 27 years old, re-joined Spartak this June after a 6-year absense), Vasilyuk (a talented Belarussian striker, just 22 years old. Just joined Spartak), Essien Okon Flo (a talented, yet underhyped, Nigerian striker. Has got talent). Overall, out of 10 -- 5, need to become independent

Alenichev said on an interview he would like to return home. Octávio (our new coach) doeasn't count on him, so he might well return to Spartak... At least I'd like more to see him return to Spartak than in Gala or being a second choice in Porto.

the -Russian Rocket-
25-08-2001, 04:38:AM
Soderstrom -- it would depend.. The rumours about Titov never end, so the Russian newspapers even stopped writing about them. I suppose that if he will have a superb season in the CL, some European club can make an offer that Spratak won't be able refuse..

As for Alenichev -- at what position did he play in Porto? In Russia he was always an attacking midfielder, though, like Titov, he could also play as normal midfielder.. And I don't think that he would look bad on the wing, too, or on the offense, although he is one of those players for whom it would be much better to play on his natural position.

actually you brought a very interesting topic.. There isn't much information about Titov's possible departure in Russian newspapers lately. Maybe that's because he literally stank at the beginning of spring for Spartak and for Russian nat. team and that could have scared off a few teams. Leeds offered Spartak 12 million pounds last year for him during the Chamions League action , but Spartak refused to sell him.

Alenitchev
25-08-2001, 06:38:AM
Alenitchev played mostly as one offensive midfielder, altough sometimes (specially when Porto played 4-3-3 with 2 AM) he played more to the right side, or behind even Deco .

This is the reason I mainly believe Titov is leaving Spartak, and Alenitchev is returning...

simonius

Porto are a fairly good team but they struggled against Grasshoppers.

They need Jardel back.

the -Russian Rocket-
25-08-2001, 08:27:AM
Porto's (or was it Benfica's? Don't recall.) staff said that Jardel is not returning. Simple as that..

Soderstrom -- Spartak could use Alenichev without departing Titov.. Though the transfer deadline in the russian league has passed until the end of the season, so Titov might as well leave and Alenichev might as well arrive in December, you may be right. Never though of it like that. For how much money do you think Porto will let Alenichev go?
