I am a bit confused about how their season works...

Is it a straight playoff type tournament the whole time or are there regular fixtures as well?

Do the two different parts of the season have anything to do with each other or no? For instance do points in one part of the season (apertura) effect the other half? Also, are there two champions as well?

And how similar/different is this to what is done in Argentina?

Thanks for the help, I've been trying to follow the Mexican league since it is always being shown, but I am confused as to how it works.:jambo:

Two tournaments in one "football" year, like Argentina.
Apertura and Clausura.

-18 teams in the league.
-Every "football" year, the team with the lowest number of points-to-gamesplayed ration gets relagated to Primera A, and a team from Primera A ascends to first division.

-The 18 teams are divided into 3 groups for each tournament.
-Every team plays every other team once in each tournament.
-The top 2 teams from each group, and the two best 3rd teams of all qualify to the "Liguilla" (In other words the best 8 teams of the regular season).
-The "Liguilla" is an elimination home/away style tournament.
-The Number 1 team in points of the season plays the Number 8 team qualified, number 2 - number 7, and so on.
-The Champion of the "Liguilla" is the Champion of the Mexican League.

-The Mexican League has two Champions each "football" year, one for Apertura, one for Clausura.

Simple see...

The most weird competition system ever. I love the "Luigilla" but i hate the group thing, its useless, the 8 best teams should qualify simple as that. On teh other hand the "Luiguilla" system makes Mediocre teams to have a chance of winnig the league, imagine the 8th team winning the league, and for some reason its more common to see that, than the 1st one actually winning the league

And having 2 champions a year its a little odd too

But oh weel the Liguilla was a lot of greaat games
