It friggin rocks! I'm using DVD component input and the visuals are amazing. Madden looks REAL. The DVD player is also great quality. Oh man, I can't wait to play a football game!! SSX is incredible.
Anyone else get their PS2 today?

I went to the Electronics place to buy one and the salesperson laughed at me. He says I can't get one till next year 'cause they're all sold out through Christmas.
But he sold me this older PlayStation. I can't find ISS yet, but I played a game called World Cup 98 which was pretty fun. Wasn't that expensive either.
Can you tell me where I could get one of these newer PlayStations? Thanks.

Picked my PS2 up yesterday. It's incredible if Fifa even comes close to Madden, quit your job, drop out of school and forget television because you will be playing this all day. Incredible. Even the video screen at the stadium is showing the game in real time and with the real score. you can see people moving on the sidelines and when the ball hits a wet field theres a splash, incredible.
Plays DVD movies too and I also played my old World cup 98 on it and the graphics were much clearer. If you do anything this year make sure you get a PS2.

SGLean,
Long time no see pal! Where have you been?
Yes Madden is fantastic, it's amazing what graphics that good can do for the realism of a game.
btw, if you have a TV with DVD Component Inputs - get the PS2 component cable, the quality is even better than S-Video!

There's a pretty good article about PS 2 capabilities on Amazon.com. They also go into detail as far as the capabilities of the machine as a DVD player. The biggest drawback seems to be that there is no built in Dolby Surround Sound decoder, which features on most dedicated DVD players in that price range. This means to watch DVD in surround sound your receiver has to have the Dolby decoder. This is no big deal however, as I think most of the new 5.1 receivers come with a build-in surroundsound decoders. It also lacks some of the features of the newer players like zoom in, and slow motion feature is not as jitter free as on some of the newer players. Of course you have to use the controller as your remote but that is not really a problem(though it might make you wish for a wire-less controller!)
I think a true test of PS2 as a DVD player will be how well does it do on playing slightly used/scratched disks. Some of the lower end players can't tolerate even minute scratches and this can be a problem, lets hope PS 2 is not that susceptible. However, if you go by how well PS did as a CD player this does not bode well for PS2. I was one of those people who used the PS as my cd player and small scratches caused it to make popping sounds, and bigger ones made the track unplayable. Now the same CD played on a good CD player in 200-300 dollar range, the small scratches are not audible and the big scratches are audible but do not lock-up the cd like it would on PS.
Anyway, for now it is a toss-up for me as to whether I should buy it or not.
