The Mexico national football team — El Tri — is the national football team of Mexico and is controlled by the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FEMEXFUT). The team is currently in 20th place, and has never been outside the top 20, in the FIFA World Rankings.
Since the 1990s, Mexico has been one of the most consistent nations in the world having qualified for four straight World Cups, and reaching the second round on all four occasions. They have also had strong showings in the Copa America ever since their first invitation from the CONMEBOL in 1993 (although they are under the jurisdiction of CONCACAF).
History
Origins to 1990
Mexico participated in the first World Cup in 1930 but did not appear again in the tournament until 1950. Mexico qualified for six consecutive World Cups including the hosting of the 1970 tournament.
Before 1970 Mexico struggled to make much impact in the World Cup when compared to European and South American teams and won only once in five tournaments (in 1962, a 3-1 win over Czechoslovakia). Goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal had the distinction of being the first player ever to appear in five consecutive World Cups. Midfielder Salvador Reyes played in the 1958, 1962 and 1966 tournaments.
In 1970, Mexico was able to make a breakthrough. Hosts for the tournament, they kicked off with a scoreless draw against the Soviet Union, followed by wins over El Salvador (4-0) and Belgium (1-0). Against Italy in the quarter-finals, they took the lead before going down 4-1.
Mexico was disqualified from the 1990 qualifiers due to fielding an overage player in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying youth tournament for 1988 Summer Olympics in Guatemala, but have since qualified for four consecutive World Cups.
Recent years
In the 1990s, Mexican football began experiencing more consistent international success. An important turning point was its participation in the 1993 Copa America, where they surprised many by finishing second in the tournament in only their first appearance, narrowly losing to Argentina 2-1 in the final. Bouyed by this success, Mexico went on to win its group in the 1994 World Cup, emerging from the tournament's "Group of Death" composed of itself, Italy, Ireland, and Norway. Although Mexico eventually bowed out in Round 2 to Bulgaria, this performance began a string of successful showings at football's premier event, as the team also moved on to Round 2 in the each of the Cups of 1998, 2002, 2006.
Since their second place finish in the 1993 Copa America, Mexico has been a regular participant in the South American tournament and has fared very well. It earned third place in 1997 and 1999 and another second place in 2001. In fact, Mexico has never failed to reach the quarter finals of the Copa America and twice has had the leading scorer in the tournament, Luis Garcia in 1995 (sharing the title with Arge. striker, Gabriel Batistuta) and Luis Hernández in 1997. The amazing growth and success of the national team during the 1990s reached its zenith when Mexico hosted and won the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup. Mexico won its first official FIFA tournament trophy by beating Brazil, no less, in an exciting high-scoring final with a final score of 4-3. Mexico's star, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, shares the tournament's Golden Shoe award as top scorer with Brazilian player, Ronaldinho.
In the 2000s, the u.s have proved a credible challenger to Mexico's dominance on the continental football scene, winning the 2002 Gold Cup and disqualifying Mexico from Round 2 in 2002 FIFA World Cup. Despite the disappointing loss, Mexico again hosted the Gold Cup in 2003. In addition, Mexico exacted their revenge on the u.s. by eliminating them during their qualification run to the 2004 Summer Olympics. In the 2005 Gold Cup tournament, however, Mexico suffered a disappointing early exit, as they were eliminated by guests Colombia in the quarterfinals on a goal with less than fifteen minutes to play.
The parallel emergence of the u.s. and Mexico on the international stage has helped elevate the status of the CONCACAF region. More importantly, however, it has provided a natural rivalry that has benefited the development both national teams. In fact, Mexico and the u.s. ran neck and neck during qualification for the 2006 World Cup. Mexico beat the u.s. 2-1 in Mexico City on March 27, 2005. The Americans then returned the favor by defeating Mexico 2-0 in columbus, OH on September 3, 2005 thus earning their place in Germany before their archrivals. Nevertheless, Mexico secured their place in the World Cup four days later with a 5-0 defeat of Panama in Mexico City. Ultimately, the two nations finished the qualification campaign with an identical 7-1-2 record — the Americans held a slight advantage in goal differential in the games between both teams.
The participation of the Mexican national team in the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup confirmed Mexico as a rising football power. Mexico began the tournament by defeating defending World Cup Champions Brazil by a score of 1-0 with an impressive display of tactical intelligence and discipline. Mexico garnered further accolades with impressive performances against traditional heavyweights arge. and Germany. Although Mexico was leading arge. in extra time of their semifinal match, they ultimately lost in a highly contested penalty shootout, 6-5. In the third place match, Mexico twice came from behind against Germany, eventually losing 4-3 in extra time.
The notable growth experienced by the Mexican national team since the early 1990s could arguably be attributed to the increased competitiveness of its domestic league, the Primera División de México. Due in large part to lucrative television contracts, Mexican football clubs are amongst the richest outside of Europe. This has made Mexico an attractive destination for many quality international players, in particular from South and Central America. In addition, Mexican clubs have done very well in international tournaments such as CONMEBOL's Copa Libertadores. In fact, in four of the last six editions of the tournament, a Mexican club has finished among the top four, including Cruz Azul's second place finish in 2001. The influx of high level foreign players, together with increased participation in international tournaments has helped compensate somewhat for the fact that traditionally, Mexican players have not sought opportunities in other countries. Still, a few Mexican players have enjoyed distinguished careers in European leagues, notably Hugo Sánchez with Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid in the 1980s and 1990s and more recently Rafael Márquez, who won a title with France's AS Monaco and is currently a key member of the two-time defending La Liga champion and current UEFA Champions League winner FC Barcelona and with Francisco Fonseca of SL Benfica being what many consider the two best players in Mexico's squad.
Further evidence of Mexico's bright football future is the title obtained by the national team in the Under-17 World Cup held in Peru in the 2005 Under-17 World Cup. A crop of emerging Mexican stars, including Giovanni Dos Santos and Carlos Vela, defeated reigning champion Brazil by an emphatic score of 3-0, thus claiming the first FIFA Youth World Championship for the North American continent (and CONCACAF).
After Germany 2006, El Tri has become one of the most regular teams in the world stage, having secured their passage to Round 2 in the last four World Cups. However, the goal of reaching the latter stages of the tournament, and thus equal or surpass their best showings when they reached the quarterfinals of the 1970 and 1986 tournaments on home soil.
2006 World Cup
Mexico played a series of friendlies in preparation for the World Cup in the u.s., seeking to maximise revenue by appealing to Mexicans living in the u.s.
Mexico was one of eight top seeded teams in the first round at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. This was the first time a non-hosting CONCACAF nation was seeded. They were put in group D with Iran, Angola and Portugal.
Mexico won their opening match 3-1 against Iran, with two goals from Omar Bravo and one by Antonio Naelson. In their second match, Mexico played in a 0-0 draw match against Angola. Mexico joined Portugal as a qualifier in the Round of 16, despite losing to the Portuguese 2-1. During the match, Mexican striker, Omar Bravo missed a penalty shot.
In their final match of the tournament, Mexico played against arge. The Mexicans scored in the 5th minute with a goal by captain Rafael Márquez. Four minutes later, an own-goal by an injured Jared Borgetti allowed arge. to equalize. The score remained 1-1 after 90 minutes, and in extra time, an exceptional volley by Maxi Rodríguez in the second period of extra time brought about a 2-1 win for arge.
Arge.-born coach Ricardo Lavolpe stepped down as coach after the tournament.
After 144 days since Lavolpe stepped down, Hugo Sánchez was named the new head coach against other candidates, such as Américo Gallego and Luis Fernando Tena.

Esquivel and Correa really earned their call-up. Atlas has some real good talent, I'm surprised "el negro" Medina didn't make it. I'm sure he will, he began the Clausura in top shape. (Y)

Mauricio 30-03-2007, 06:09:AM I think Bofo should be a starter to, and Magallon is a good promise, this would be the best agressive formation,i like it very much, it has been the most creative team even without a natural stricker like borgetti, but i doubt hugo is goign to use this fomration at the begining he is going to start with a little more defensive style, like playin with torrado and PArdo together

ManU2000 04-06-2007, 07:01:AM Magallon - 8 este debe ser la pareja de Marquez haha, Magallon is solid but either Osorio or Salcido should partner Rafa, there really shouldn't even be a question about that.

It's gonna be Cuauh's goodbye from Estadio Azteca also which should make for a very interesting match for the fans who should fill the stadium up, if possible.
Like Mau said, I've never been so exited over our NT with this many talented players since probably the '94 WC squad. We finally have talent in Europe and the number of players playing overseas should grow after this summer.

Despite their reputation, love for the game, and massive population, their national team has never performed well. They've hosted two world cups and never made it past the quarter-finals. Now they can't even compete with the US national team. They don't even have that many players on their NT playing in the top leagues in Europe. If I remember correctly Marquez was the only player in their 2006 WC squad playing outside of Mexico. The only thing Mexico has ever done is beat up on weak CONCACAF teams and see their FIFA rating soar way too high because of it. And the Gold Cup is showing that they can't even do that anymore. At the very least they should've stuck with La Volpe. He was a good manager.

The only thing Mexico has ever done is beat up on weak CONCACAF teams and see their FIFA rating soar way too high because of it. And the Gold Cup is showing that they can't even do that anymore. At the very least they should've stuck with La Volpe. He was a good manager.
interesting signature but either way i will post my response.:mexican:
first im a Chicano which means American of Mexican descent and proud of it.
Mexican soccer not impressing you is your opinion but I can say the same
about MLS which I do not even consider a league cause there is no
relegation or promotion and only 13 teams. I beg to differ in that Mexican
team can't compete because yes the u.s has defeated Mexico in the most
recent matches but they have all been in the u.s territory. Simple fact is u.s
has never defeated Mexico in Mexican soil and well Mexico has defeated the
u.s many times in the u.s. In 2006 Mexico only had one player in Europe but
now in the present there are 5 in Europe. Marquez with Barcelona who
will probably be transfered to A.C. Milan, Pavel Pardo and Ricardo
Osorio with Vfb Stuttgart both starters for their team, Champions of
Bundesliga and 2nd Place in League Cup, Pardo voted as 3rd best player in all
of Bundesliga according to kicker.de (most famous German soccer
newspaper) and may I add all of this in their 1st season, Carlos Salcido
with PSV Eindhoven also Champion Dutch League and Finally Nery
Castillo Champion with Olympiakos. There also Giovanni Dos Santos
in Barca B but will be moved 1st Barcelona team for 07/08 season and
Carlos Vela who is property of Arsenal but can't play in EPL because of
British sporting laws. It is not Mexico's fault that they are located in the
CONCACAF the weakest zone globally in football but so is the u.s so both
beat on weak Concacaf teams. Maybe you did not see 2006 Confederations
Cup so i'll refresh your memory Mexico defeated Brazil 1 - 0 with all of their
star players except Ronaldo. Only thing I agree with you is that they should
have stuck with Lavolpe but that was never going to happen. but instead of
Hugo Mexican Federation should have hired a world famous coach....

Nimreitz 25-06-2007, 11:19:AM Great game Mexico. I didn't like some of Hugo's comments at the end of the game (the penalty was beyond accurate), but the players on the field for you are very good. I am not excited about going against Castillo, Guardado, and Vela for the next 10 years. It was also the most sporting game from either side I have seen in this rivalry. There were no intentionally violent incidents from either team, which was refreshing.
johncmcleod 28-06-2007, 04:21:AM How long has the Mexican league been around? MLS has been around for 11 seasons and is the professional league of a sport which isn't in America's top five. How can you expect it to be any good? As for the leagues, we have two or three player development leagues below the MLS, we just don't have relegation because it is not part of the American sports tradition. But in comparing the two leagues I don't think there is much difference in the level of play. We'll see once they set up the CL style tournament with US and Mexican teams, but the MLS teams have played well in exhibition matches against Mexican teams.
As for the national team, the US routinely beats Mexico now. They struggle playing in Mexico City, but the pollution and climate there is absolutely stifling for the Americans because of what they're used to. It may be a while before we're consistently successful on Mexican soil, but also keep in mind that our NT couldn't qualify for a world cup until the 90's. We're pretty new to this and our professional league started recently.
As for the Mexican side, yes, you do have 5 players in Europe now. But can you really count the Greek league? It's probably no better than the Mexican league or MLS. The Bundesliga isn't good any more either, neither is the Eredivisie. The problem is you only have one (possibly two) playing in one of the big three (la liga, serie a, premiership). The USMT has several, including Howard, Hanneman, Onyewu, Bocanegra, Convey, Beasley, Dempsey, etc.
Yes, you did beat Brazil in the Confederations Cup, and yes, they had most of their stars in, but we all know that it's not a prestigious tournament. But is that all you have to show for the Mexican side? All of those world cups they've been to, and their greatest achievement was a Confederations Cup game?
It's not that I don't think the Mexican NT is good, I just don't think it's good when you consider it's circumstances. Mexican is a huge country with a large population that loves the sport just as any other Latin country does. But historically, they can't even compare to a nation like Argentina or Brazil. Because of CONCACAF they make every world cup, but they've never even made it to the semi-finals. The US has been there. I just think that a country with Mexico's population and its passion for the game should have a national team that's won at least a few world cups. Mexico's population is almost three times Argentina's and the game is just as popular in both places. So why does Argentina have two world cups and Mexico has never even been to the semi finals (despite hosting 2 world cups)?
And if we were to compare Mexico to European national teams, their performance is embarrassing considering their population. Holland's been to two finals and their population is only 16 million (Mexico is 109 million).
You can't use the same argument against the USA though. It's expected for the USNT to not be any good because of how unpopular soccer is here. If it were the number one sport and our team was as good as we are now, it would be pathetic. But despite soccer not being a mainstream sport (all of our good athletes play football or basketball), our NT is still pretty good.

There's not a "much difference" in level of play?
MLS team have played well in exhibition matches against Mexican teams?
How many times has an MLS team won over a Mexican team?
Let's take the Concacaf Champions Cup as a place to compare the MLS and the FMF:
-MLS teams have 9 victories 4 Draws and 15 losses against Mexican teams.
-A fact is though, an MLS team has never won in Mexico.
-Since 1997, when the MLS started to participate, Mexican teams have won the cup 6 times, Costa Rican teams 2 times, and MLS teams 2 times.
-Overall, Mexican teams have won the cup 23 times, with Costa Rica following with 6.
How about outside of Concacaf?
-A Mexican team became the champion of the Sudamerican last year.
-Mexican teams always compete toe-to-toe with any south-american team in Copa Libertadores, and have advanced to the Final, and Semi-Finals several times.
-Even Bottom-table Mexican teams are able to advance from the Group Stage of Libertadores.
-DC united lost to Colo-Colo in their only participation of Copa Sudamericana.
Ok ok... I'll stop laughing now.
Hmm, we've had 9 players in Europe.
(Hugo, Marquez, Salcido, Borguetti, Blanco, Palencia, Osorio, Pardo, Nery)
They've won;
Leagues: 6 Spanish La Liga titles, 1 German Bundesliga title, 1 French League Title, 1 Greek Title, 1 Eredivisie Title.
Cups: 1 Champions League title, 1 UEFA Cup title, 2 Copa del Rey titles.
That's a pretty good ratio, considering the number of players.
It's not that I don't think the Mexican NT is good, I just don't think it's good when you consider it's circumstances. -Russia has also never won a world cup.
-Their population is bigger than any other euro country.
-The US made it to the semi-finals in 1930. :S
Brazil and Argentina were just taking baby steps back then.

Right...
I don't know what you have against Mexico, but don't compare the US to Mexico when it comes to football. Just like we don't compare ourselfs to Brazil and Argentina. Yes, you have won a few games against us in the recent years, but I can say that we are in a transitional period right now, even though you guys have gotten a whole lot better.
Don't talk about Mexican Football, if you don't know anything about Mexican Football.
Start watching some Mexican League or Libertadores games, to get alittle more knowledge about us.
Shiryu 28-06-2007, 09:46:AM Perfect timing. However, that was pretty much Brazil's C squad, and it's just the Copa America.
That's pretty much all of Dunga's selected team actually, except for Kaka and Ronaldinho, that didn't want to play. Our's was the B team. We were missing Blanco, Borguetti, Salcido, Osorio, Medina, Guardado, and Pardo.
Copa America doesn't matter?
Why did Argentina bring their A-team then?
Why did everyone else bring their A-team?
Does the Euro Cup matter?
It's the same thing...
C'mon, stop playing around already...

Mexico had a great defense, Magallon, Castro, Marquez and Pinto did a great job stoping Robinho and Vagner Love! And what a performance Ochoa had, unbelivable same goes for Nery Castillo although he had some selfish plays throughout the game! Overall great performance by el tri, viva Mexico!

You have to keep in mind that the MLS has only been around for 11 years and the level of play improves every year. A lot of these games were played back when the MLS was much worse and had fewer teams. But they're going to set up a CL style tournament with Mexican and MLS teams soon, and we'll see what happens then.
The Bundesliga isn't good?
Ok ok... I'll stop laughing now.
It's definitely not the Premiership or La Liga. I'll give it to you though, the Mexican team does have some rising young players playing in Europe. Too bad every soccer powerhouse has that and more.
-China, India, and Iran have never won a world cup.
According to your argument, they should have more world cups that anyone else.
-Russia has also never won a world cup.
-Their population is bigger than any other euro country.
I can't believe you're even bringing up this argument. Can you even compare the place of football in those countries compared to Mexico? It has been getting more popular in those places recently but football was almost nonexistent in them not very long ago and still isn't too popular. However, there is a very strong football tradition in Mexico (at least it's always been hugely popular there). It's the country's passion and national sport, and despite their massive population they don't compare to much smaller nations where the game isn't any more popular.
I don't have anything against Mexico, I'm a Mexican citizen. I'm just pointing out that despite hosting two world cups the MNT has never been too successful at a world cup but some seem to regard them as a powerhouse with a lot of history. And I don't see why we can't compare ourselves to Mexico in football. Yes, you have historically dominated us. But for christ's sake the MLS started in 96! We didn't have any world cups from 50-90 as no one in our country even played the sport. But now people are starting to play and we have a financially stable league. Our MNT now dominates Mexico as long as the game is played in a place where the air isn't thoroughly contaminated. Historically, no, we can't compare to Mexico. However, now we have a stable league, the sport is gaining in popularity, and American soccer is getting better all of the time. I think this is the beginning of an era of American domination in CONCACAF. I don't think we'll ever be a superpower along the likes England or Holland (Brazil and Argentina are certainly out of the question), but we're getting better all of the time.
As for the Brazil argument, yes, congrats on the game. But do I have to remind you of what happened earlier this month? The loss to Honduras? Their stunning 2-1 victory over Cuba? The game against Guadolupe? Even if you include the Brazil game, the MNT hasn't played well at all as of late.
damn just looked at it and it took u.s team 46 years to beat Mexico after defeating them in first match USA 4 - 2 Mexico / II World Cup Qualifying. and the americans are currently braggin about how Mexico cant beat them the last matches in past 2 years. give me a break, the facts speak for themselves....
And for how many of those 46 years did we actually have people in the US playing football?
If the only thing you can do is compare Mexico to the US, than you're in trouble. I don't claim that the US is a great team. What I am trying to point out is that despite Mexico's huge population, love for the game, automatic qualification for every World Cup due to CONCACAF, and two home world cups, they've never performed well internationally. Every nation that has ever hosted a WC has made it out of the group stage, and despite hosting two, Mexico has only gotten one game farther than that. Even when the US hosted it in 94 we got out of the group stage. Though the semi-final the US made it to was in 1930, we beat Mexico in 02 to get to the quarterfinal, which is as far as they've ever gotten. We would've gone farther too if it weren't for poor officiating. And let's look at the countries that have gotten farther than Mexico in the World Cup. Belgium's played in a semi-final. Croatia has played in a semi final. Korea and Turkey have too. The same goes for Bulgaria, Poland, Portugal, Uruguay (and in the cup Mexico hosted, too), the USSR, Austria, Yugoslavia, and Chile. Out of all places Chile has been to a semi-final and Mexico hasn't.

skiptomylou 09-09-2007, 11:48:PM That was a good decision in my opinion. There's no point in risking players' getting hurt for a friendly. And the play was getting pretty dirty because the referee couldn't keep the players in check.
Either way it was kind of disappointing to see. Gio didn't do much. But can't really blame the players I guess since the field was in horrible condition, and the rain didn't help. No players really stood out, besides Salcido and Nery. Hopefully the game against Brazil will be better. Also I wanna see Carlos Vela play.

Patricio Araujo, Gonzalo Pineda, Omar Esparza any good?
Can you give me some info about these 3 players?
1st Fact all 3 players play for Chivas Rayadas de Guadalajara.:)
Patricio Araujo: nickname "Pato" (Duck) 19 , can play as CB or DM. some consider him the next Rafa Marquez but still to early although Marquez at his age had not been Champion in Mexican League like Pato was at 18 as starting DM. very strong but not dirty. good technique, not very fast. can control Midfield very well and runs all over the pitch.rumored that Ajax and Arsenal is keeping an eye on him.
Gonzalo Pineda: nickname (Gonzo) 25 , can play as LM or DM. good technique, good left shot, very good at dribbling. can also control Midfield well and also runs all over the pitch. likes to kick penalties Panenka style.
Omar Esparza: 19 , can play as RM or RB. good speed, back and forth player. ok crossing but other than that i personally do not find him a good a player. i consider him below average. he has ok technique....
1 Question?? why you need or want info on these 3 particular players, is a team you root for interested in one of them?? thanks in advance for response....

Mexico fire coach Sanchez after just 16 months
MEXICO CITY, April 1 (Reuters) - Mexico fired coach Hugo Sanchez on Monday after only 16 months in the job, the Mexico Football Federation (FMF) said.
The former Real Madrid striker, widely regarded as the finest player Mexico has produced, was sacked two weeks after the under-23 team, which he also coaches, failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.
The FMF said the decision had been taken by a meeting of the federation's executive committee, which is made up of the presidents of the 18 first division clubs.
'By a unanimous decision, the contractual relationship with the technical staff of the national team has been ended,' FMF general secretary Decio de Maria told a news conference.
De Maria said that Jesus Ramirez, who coached the Mexico team which won the World Under-17 championship in Peru in 2005, would take over on an interim basis for next month's friendly against China in the United States.
Mexican media have identified a list of possible long-term replacements, including Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari, currently with Portugal, Argentine Jose Pekerman and Italy's 2006 World Cup winning coach Marcelo Lippi.
Sanchez, appointed in November 2006 after lobbying intensively for the job for years, was in charge for 23 full internationals, winning 12, drawing three and losing eight.
However, it was the Olympic team's failure which proved his downfall as Mexico were knocked out in the first stage of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament after finishing third behind Canada and Guatemala in their group.
With Mexico's first matches in the 2010 World Cup qualifying competition only three months away, FMF president Justino Compean said he did not want to risk any more failures.
'We want winners and leaders, we cannot accept another failure,' he said. 'If you thought this was difficult, can you imagine Mexico not being in South Africa.'
Even before the Olympic debacle, Sanchez had been under fire following the full international side's performance at the CONCACAF Gold Cup last year.
Despite reaching the final, where they lost 2-1 to hosts United States, Mexico struggled to one-goal wins over Cuba, Panama and Guadeloupe and lost to Honduras.
They produced a much-improved performance at the Copa America in Venezuela shortly afterwards, beating Brazil 2-0 and thumping Paraguay 6-0 on their way to the semi-finals where they lost to a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina.
As a player, Sanchez finished as top-scorer in the Spanish league five times -- four of them with Real Madrid -- and played at the 1978, 1986 and 1994 World Cups.
He was famous for his somersaulting goal celebrations.
As a coach, he won two successive Mexican titles with Pumas UNAM but, even then, had alienated many people with his outspoken comments.
I still remember when he would take every chance to criticize the previous coach for every little thing that went wrong, because he wanted the job.. Now he finds, out first hand that its not as easy as it looks.

ronnifan9 23-07-2008, 10:25:PM Recently some of those players who criticized the signing of Sven have changed to the opinion that it was just the wrong time not that it was the wrong person. I don't get it.
Mr. Sven has visited many of the clubs to drench himself in person with information about individual players he's considering for a call-up, something HEGO never did. I heard reports that he's been watching videos like crazy, he's seen the performances in the WC, as well as the rescent Copa America.
ME LIKE VERY MUCHO what the man is doing, I bet he's even learned the basic Spanish to communicate with players (probably all the cuss words too) (H). A huge help he's going to need and has is the assistance of Paco Ramirez, the assistant for Lavolpe in the WC. Most experts say he (Paco) knows better than anyone all the players considered for call-ups.
My time is up...I'll continue with this later.
Hugo game and interview to ESPN yesterday. He talked about everything and even criticized Sven but didn't say anything about his "fracaso". Hugo thinks he is god. He's a douche.

Honduras played well in Mexico. They almost took the win home. Mexico had a real hard time beating them at their house. It wouldn't surprise me if Honduras beats Mexico in San Pedro Sula. If that happens Jamaica would need to score like 7 goals to leave Mexico out but Jamaica has only been able to score 1 goal per game. I see that very unlikely to happen.

Oh!! "Mexico va a pasar a la hexagonal caminando" said a lot of Mexican reporters but pasaron de "panzaso". Honduras came out 1st of the group and the so "Gigante" of CONCACAF was almost left out. Mexico only wins in D.F.
ronnifan9 29-11-2008, 05:07:AM Yeah, we had the toughest group but we still shouldn't depend on Jamaica not scoring more than 6 goals on Canada, but thankfully they only put up 3 on the score. It really is embarrasing the way we advanced...

There was still a lot of holes on defense, though. Ochoa bailed out the defense a few times, and they still kept making mistakes. Had that been against a stronger side we'd be looking at two or three goals allowed. They better shape up.

Guillermo Franco Delantero (S/E)

Cuauhtémoc Blanco Delantero (Chicago Fire)
Néstor Calderón Delantero (Toluca)
As fans we're quick to point out who was left out and point the finger to those who don't get our approval, so is the case with this call-up. Contrary to what I've said, Nestor Calderon's call-up pleases me very much although some ''journalists" say it's too early for him to wear 'la verde' but I don't believe his call up automatically emphasizes he should be a starter, it's more like setting up the ground work so that when it's his time to shine, he'll have all the leberties to demontrate his talent.
In the not too distant future, I see some very bright prospects raising their hand with their current forms of play. Examples: Javier 'chicharito' Hernandez (Chivas); Edgar Pacheco (Atlas); Raul Nava (Toluca); Elias Hernandez (Morelia); Enrique Esqueda (America); Armand Pulido (Tigres); Abraham Carreño (Monterrey); Pablo Barrera who was called up (Pumas); and one of my favorites to watch Christian Bermudez (Atlante).
All of them attaking mids, winger-forwards, or strikers. Who said the offensive talent was lacking Mexico? It's a matter of giving them playing time and reducing the number of internationals allowed to be signed by teams, I think reducing the number to 4 instead of the 5 that are currently allowed, considering that one tournament ago, 6 were still allowed, would be ideal in order to have these players affirm themselves as prominet players for the 2014 WC.
Nery Castillo was once more called up?...wtf!!
Who will be the ref for the Honduras vs T&T game? I'm sure it won't be a Mexican since Chiquidracula was accused of thief and what not..lol..I think the Hondurans were right though..Mexico will try anything to make it to the WC.
skiptomylou 26-08-2009, 11:44:PM I like the fact that more and more younger players are being called up for important games. I especially liked Hector Moreno being called up, as well as Pablo Barrera. I also want to see what Calderon can do if he gets to play some. He looks like a good pacey attacking mid, which would possibly work well together with the likes of Gio and Guardado.
My only question is why has Cuauhtemoc been called up when there's an over-abundance of young attackers. I think eventhough he helps the team with his experience and leadership, but at the cost of a potential young player getting valuable experience in these types of games. Also as far as free kicks, Pavel Pardo is a much more dangerous FK taker, so I don't understand that angle. I know Israel Castro has done really well taking his spot, but I would rather have him over Cuauh at this point.
Oh yeah, and I wonder why Vela wasn't called up. So far he hasn't been playing with Arsenal, so unless he picked up an injury that I don't know about, his exclusion leaves me puzzled. He has been playing really well when he has been given the chance. I would have much rather given him a call up over Nery if it had anything to do with lack of space.
Ilaje 26-08-2009, 11:52:PM Vela is out for about a month (:() something he picked up while with you. I really like seeing him play so that kind of leaves me pissed.

skiptomylou 07-09-2009, 08:52:PM Really good result for an away game. That field was so ****ty, they might as well have played in concrete. I'm just glad there were no injuries, those ****ers threw elbows all game. The defense was solid, but Costa Rica couldn't piece together even one good attack. They were terrible. I won't be surprised if they stay fourth and get raped by a COMENBOL team.
Gio was great. He gave Guille and Guardado tap-ins for goals. Also Efrain Juarez, Salcido and Osorio played well. Cuauh was effective the first half, then became completely invisible in the second. I think it'll be a blessing in desguise to have him sit out on Wednesday's game. Th attack is centered around him too much. Sometimes it's a good, but the team becomes one dimensional, which is what happened in the first half at times.
I'd love to see Hector Moreno as DM instead of Torrado. Doubt it would happen, but it would be nice to see him play. I also wouldn't mind seeing Barrera play on the right, Guardado on the left and leave Gio play an open attack role - that seemed to work really well. Then as the ST have Sabah or even Nery. The Franco project is done. Too bad he scored, which means he's gonna play next game.
I want a 3-0 or more score. The game in Honduras was a disaster. The team is way better now, and I don't think Honduras will do **** in Azteca. Should be interesting.

I would much rather see Moreno play LCB than having Osorio because the Honduran strikers are physically strong and much taller than Osorio (1.74) at the most. Moreno is something like 1.83 and physically strong so he can defend better in the air against set plays, one of the areas that most hurts us.

Osorio's was a red. His intention was to hurt the player. **** that bull**** about him hitting the ball first..please.
There were fouls less dangerous than Osorio's from Honduran players but those guys did get cards?
"El Gigante" finish the game wasting time laying on the field like little bitches at their own house. Isn't that a shame?? Cuathemoc Blanco once again proved that he is the lowest "tepito" trash that will ever come out of Mexico. Him & Osorio had to be booked but the ref knew that it could cost him his FIFA badge if he wasn't baised.
Mexico will go to the WC no matter what; with all the help it takes bc without it they are a mediocre team.

Funny how you failed to mention that the ref disallowed a perfectly legal goal for Mexico, but whine about fouls and other things that didn't nearly impacted the game as that.
For the record, I think Osorio's foul was a red, and I was annoyed by Cuauhtemoc's antics. but at least call it like it is. It's not like Honduran players don't play-act or make hard fouls.

Honduras isn't even close to being a powerhouse. The Honduran media hypes them up to believe that ****.
I believe the goal was offsides. the ball didn't hit the Honduran defender like the Mexican press claims.
I didn't expect Honduras to win the game just like I didn't expect the tactics the Honduran coach used. They have a team that could have played attacking football and instead he chose to send them out there to defend. IMO it's the reason for the loss. The Mexican team was scared of Suazo. They teamed up on him every time he touched the ball but the smart coach too him out to bring in Costly who didn't do anything together with the already lost Pavon:rolleyes:
The Honduran players did commit un-necessary fouls but my point is that they got booked unlike the Mexican players that did the same thing but the ref let them get away with it.
Why waste more energy on Cuathemoc? We all know the kind of trash he is.
jimorrizon 13-09-2009, 09:58:PM Cuautemoc is not from tepito. and if Mexico is going to qualify to the World Cup its thanks to el Vasco Aguirre and the players. go worry about your team....
skiptomylou 23-09-2009, 06:36:PM Jonathan called up for the friendly against Colombia! (H)
I really could care less about this friendly, but I'm glad he's finally called up. I think this is a good move by Aguirre. I would love to see what he can do with the team. Hopefully he won't just get called up to sit in the bench. Here's the list of the other players called up:
Francisco Guillermo Ochoa- América
José de Jesús Corona- Cruz Azul
Defensas
Paul Aguilar- Pachuca
José Antonio Castro - Tigres
Hugo Ayala- Atlas
Jonny Magallón- Chivas
Édgar Dueñas - Toluca
Óscar Rojas- América
Mediocampistas
Patricio Araujo- Chivas
Gerardo Torrado- Cruz Azul
Jonathan dos Santos- Barcelona
Braulio Luna- San Luis
Édgar Pacheco- Atlas
Delanteros
Néstor Calderón- Toluca
Juan Carlos Cacho- Pachuca
Javier Hernández- Chivas
Omar Arellano- Chivas
Enrique Esqueda- América
I don't really expect much from this game, but Jonathan possibly playing has sparked my interest in watching it. Maybe a few other players will push themselves into the first team. A lot of young players are in it. The only head scratcher is Braulio Luna. Isn't he like 40 by now? :icon_spin:
jimorrizon 23-09-2009, 08:00:PM who cares how old Braulio Luna? just look at Temo, plus Braulio has been playing at a really good level with San Luis the past few tournaments. I think el Vasco wants him to be the natural sub for Guardado, remember Aguirre took Braulio Luna with him to the 2002 World Cup.
what sucks is that Aguirre will never call back Pavel Pardo or even give a shot to Sinha....
skiptomylou 23-09-2009, 09:14:PM I would much rather see a bunch of younger players with one or two reasonably older veterans. I know what Cuauh has done, but I hate that our 'go to' player is nearing 40 when there is a surplus of young talented players. The team plays one-dimensional when Cuauh, it's like everyone runs around and look for him to do something.
Aguirre seems to favor many aging players that just don't really contribute to the NT as much as a younger player would, but for the most part he gets most call ups right I guess. The way this is going, I won't be surprised if he calls up Borgetti again since we need a striker. It's a little much.
What happaned with Pavel Pardo? I know that Israel Castro has played well in his place, but he's one of the players that can help more than any other verteran player. So I don't get why he isn't being called up anymore.
jimorrizon 23-09-2009, 10:14:PM Pavel won't return because he doesn't get along with Temo just like Oswaldo, Borgetti, and Marquez the famous supporters of the Lavolpe era. but pretty sure Marquez will return once he is fully fit....

I'm still not convinced on Israel Castro but he'll probably get the call-up over someone who I'd favor like Pavel Pardo. The same goes for Guille Franco because I honestly would like to see some other young strikers like Pablo Barrera or Omar Arellano.

MaestroZidane 25-05-2010, 12:50:AM Are they really playing with the full squad?? or not yet?
skiptomylou 25-05-2010, 04:33:AM It's the first game with the full squad.
Loving how Maza is playing. I think him and Moreno should play back and let Rafa play as a holding mid. Barrera looked solid except he lacked a good shot. The real WTF is why in the hell is he playing conejo at GK? That's ridiculous. He's god damn horrible... I really doubt Ochoa or even Michel play as bad as him.
The level of play really dropped off once Vela and Gio were off, and England just began to run in circles on us. It was a bit worrying.
ronnifan9 26-05-2010, 03:56:AM I have doubts, concerns, and criticism.
My doubts: Who are gonna be the central backs? Yeah Maza, but do you really think Moreno is ready? If he does decide those two should play it leaves no option but to put Rafa at defensive mid but I really don't think he's comfortable there, he missed a bunch of passes and he's even slower in that position; I think Torrado and Juarez do an outstanding job with the marking so I prefer those two in the mid.
Concerns: Why is Conejo playing when it's Ochoas job, and what really concerns me is that he won't have rhythum and confidence when the WC starts...seriously this really concerns me because his season has been marked with errors and what he needs most is playing time so he feels more comfortable.
Criticism: First of all we can't finish a play for sh!t, our shots are weak and nobody can score a damn goal. This of course goes mainly to Vela with those two wide open shots.
The game with England was dissapoiting because they gave us the ball and only gave like 60% effort, yeah we touched the ball real nicely but that was it; alot of tiki-tiki and no pum-pum!!!
Next we face my motherland, I mean the Netherlands. (H) I think we're gonna see what the TRI is really made of in this game because "Holland" unlike England will want the ball.
How about this for a line-up vs. Netherlands:
------------Ochoa
-----Marquez--Maza
-Osorio------------Salcido
-------Juarez--Torrado
Dos Santos----Guardado
---Chicharito--Franco (if he recovers)
skiptomylou 26-05-2010, 09:18:AM I have doubts, concerns, and criticism.

I think Moreno is ready enough. I mean, he's playing in Europe and has played in the Champions League, plus he has looked solid (although never really tested with the cupcake teams the federation puts on). To me he's an upgrade from Osorio.
I think that Rafa looked solid defensively, although going forward he looked shaky. He needs more control and his long passes are sorely needed. Gio could use a few of them since he's arguably our fastest player.
Juarez has earned a spot in the starting 11, but I think he's more a player going forward. I never really see him defending except on the wings with Torrado playing sort of a sweeper role. With that said, what happened to Israel Castro? It's odd that he hasn't gotten any playing time when him and Juarez always seem to do a good partnership. I know that Torrado is an unmovable player, but I'd like to see how Castro would do with Rafa as holding mids and then let Juarez play on the right wing to attack.
How about this for a line-up vs. Netherlands:
------------Ochoa
-----Marquez--Maza
-Osorio------------Salcido
-------Juarez--Torrado
Dos Santos----Guardado
---Chicharito--Franco (if he recovers)
I like that line-up. The only concern is that Guille looked solid (then got hurt), and when Chicarito came in to sub him, he was basically invisible. I didn't see much of Guardado, either. Hope to see better performances all around.

skiptomylou 01-06-2010, 08:59:AM I can't believe JDS was the one who was sent home. Sure, he didn't make an impact, but I think for the sake of gaining the experience itself, he should have been in the 23 man squad.
Don't tell me Bofo was saved by his two tap-ins cause I'm gonna be pretty ******* annoyed. He's proved many times how useless he is. Hell, he was the ONLY played boo'ed in Azteca.

Zizinho has been bitching non-stop. It's quite funny :D Bofo will be a starter, together with "El Conejo" bc Aguirre is a moron.

Congrats on the win. Well deserved. I have nothing bad to say about the team this time. I´m surprised to see how bad France plays.
Nimreitz 18-06-2010, 02:55:AM You know, my animosity for you guys is starting to go down a little bit. This is probably due to the fact that most of the players from the 2002 team are gone and they seem to have been replaced by young players who don't play like assholes. I will never in my life forget watching our game in the 2002 World Cup and being absolutely disgusted with the disrespect we were shown by your players, some deliberately trying to injure us (particularly Cobi Jones, who I NEVER liked until that game when he sort of became a martyr).
So... for that reason I can never even consider liking your team until Marquez is gone, but you're on your way to redemption in my eyes. Gio is just awesome, Chicarito looks like he could be one for the future, and I also quite like Magallon, Ochoa (WHERE IS HE!?!?!), and Salcido.

I have never really cared for Mexico (just to clarify, I'm referring to the Mexican National Team here, I have absolutely nothing against Mexico as a country or its people) and have traditionally hoped for them to fail, but I have been very impressed with how the team played in the group. I rate Dos Santos very highly, in fact I would love to see him come to United, and of course our new boy Chicharito.

MaestroZidane 28-06-2010, 02:47:AM when you loose, I celebrate your loss.. but not this time since you got screwed.
skiptomylou 28-06-2010, 08:23:AM The only silver lining, which is very out of the ordinary for a Mexican squad, is that there is a ton of upside for years to come. Many young players are coming up, and that is very rare when Mexico is usually composed of many late 20, early 30 somethings in the NT.
I hope players like Moreno, Paul Rodriguez, Efrain Juarez, Pablo Barrera, Gio, Jonathan, Nestor Calderon, Carlos Vela, Chicharito, and whoever else comes up through the process are ready to step up their game and take Mexico out of the same place they have been in the past two decades it seems.
I will be very happy if Mexico forms into a team that will play talented players and not field mediocre "experienced" older players just because there's not enough trust on the talented younger players. I'm sick of seeing scrubs like Conejo Perez, Bofo Bautista, Guille Franco, hell even Cuauhtemoc being called up because the managers don't trust the younger talent. There has to be change, and the team needs to move forward with the core of younger but now experienced players and build from that. **** calling up scrubs when there is more talent out there.

Jaboldinho 28-06-2010, 11:37:AM Chicharito, Gio and Salcido were really impressive, as was the team effort. Shame you had to go out like that, I was rooting for Argentina, definitely, but still, you deserved a fair fight. I'm pretty sure you would've advanced against, say, England.
