View Full Version : Messi's Goal of the Century
Sevillista 19-04-2007, 12:36:AM Okay, so the century is only seven years old, but here it is:
http://www.lionelmessi.org/video.php?itemid=549
If Maradona had the best goal of the 20th century, surely this is the best of the 21st.
For those who don't know, this goal was scored today against Getafe in the Copa del Rey semifinals.
 Messi
edit: If that link doesn't work, try this one (http://www.mediafire.com/?emzzmy5rwkd).
Help? 19-04-2007, 12:50:AM Goal of the century? Let's wait a bit for that. Goal of the Year? Quite possibly.
Psyatika 19-04-2007, 01:31:AM Gololololololololololololololololololololololol!!! !!!!!!!!!!!
jimorrizon 19-04-2007, 01:50:AM nice but not in a World Cup unlike maradonuts....
rony31 19-04-2007, 02:28:AM wow :| his deeks were a lot nicer than Maradona's in my eyes, practically went through 2 defenders with those PES-esque side-cuts (Y)

zlojack 19-04-2007, 04:00:AM That is the future of football right there.
yoyo913 19-04-2007, 04:13:AM Awesome, very similar to the maradona goal.
Thelonious 19-04-2007, 04:26:AM goal of the century so far.
MaSsiVe 19-04-2007, 05:13:AM that goal was out of this ******* world, I wanna have hardcore sex with it.

OrgulloVikingo 19-04-2007, 05:30:AM The kid is amazing. I really feel he's gonna be the best in the world soon, if he isn't already. Honestly, I'd pick him over Cristiano Ronaldo anyday. And this is coming from a Madridista. No denying greatness.
$teauA 19-04-2007, 05:52:AM AMAZING
ShearerM4 19-04-2007, 06:06:AM Great goal no doubt... and funny how very similar to Maradona's it is!! especially once he gets into the box and past the keeper.
Not even goal of the month though I'm afraid, I prefer long rangers or volleys to solo goals.
fantastic!
but Kaká - Fenerbahce owns it (H)
tracertong 19-04-2007, 07:19:AM Amazing goal reminiscent of Maradonna against England. Well done Lionel.

I'd agree with Matt. This won't even come close to goal of the century. But a very good goal nonetheless. The difference between this goal and Maradona's is that Messi did it against Getafe.
Wow, an orgasmic goal, nothing else to say about it...A magical run just like Diego's, and what is even more shocking is after he scores he falls to the ground just like Maradona did and runs just like him to celebrate to the right corner...For me this will be the goal of the decade, at least. I have to disagree with the user who said that this might be the goal of the month, you practically see very nice long-range shot goals from time to time, but you rarely (and I mean very rarely) see a solo run like Messi's.
PURE MAGIC, nothing more...(Y)
Sevillista 19-04-2007, 08:06:AM In response to some of the replies:
Getafe is not a bad team. They are 9th place and have conceded the fewest goals in La Liga.
Volley goals are impressive, but they require a lot of luck, and the opposing defence isn't really "beat." Today Messi took the ball half the length of the field and beat four defenders and the keeper by himself. It required just the right touches and incredible speed.
The Kaka goal versus Fenerbahce was impressive, but he started closer to the goal, beat fewer defenders, and shot past the keeper instead of beating him. I have to say Messi wins.

Agree, how many volley goals do you see in comparison to solo goals from behind midfield?
Thelonious 19-04-2007, 09:10:AM yer with modern footballs anyone with a bit of luck can score a great long distance or volley goal. Only truly great players can score goals like Messi's.
ShearerM4 19-04-2007, 09:15:AM Each to his own as always...
Maybe I prefer blockbuster hard hits because the player I idolise was almost incapable of dribbling past ten players.
Or maybe he just didn't need to, unlike Messi ;)

That last line didn't make sense, but whatever. I respect your tastes, but all I am saying is that it is much more common to score long volleys than to score solo runs from half-field and bypassing various defenders. That is what makes this goal unique for me...
pefan 19-04-2007, 11:13:AM great goal by Messi...But Getafe are no England lol.
Ubik Valis 19-04-2007, 11:34:AM great goal by Messi...But Getafe are no England lol.
Yeah, Getafe need to score own goals like against Croatia to be on that level.
As for Goal of the Century......hmmm.......let's give this century another 93 years before we start whipping out our dicks to circle-jerk to this - no doubt - beauty of a goal by Messi.
goal_machine84 19-04-2007, 11:36:AM Brilliant goal (H) :rockman:

Psyatika 19-04-2007, 11:53:AM I'm just waiting for the inevitable Nike "passing of the torch" advert going back and forth between the two goals (Messi's and Maradona's).
Will be a great advert when it comes out!
Very nice. But it looks too similar to maradonas goal that was also scored on a game of much higher importance. Anyway top 10 stuff for this century so far.
I still like Ronaldinhos goal from 2005 more. It was nothing you've seen before

JuventusForever 19-04-2007, 12:49:PM Really is an amazing goal, I was going crazy on my couch when I saw it go in, but still World Cup>Spanish liga cup... Wouldn't go far and even crowning it goal of the year let alone the decade, you never know what is to come.

Jaouadinho 19-04-2007, 02:01:PM yeh good goal, but unfortanatlly after a few weeks everyone will forget about it as it was against getafe in the copa del rey, which some have never even heard of yet alone watched.

And the fact that Messi is a forward who was back chasing Kaka when he scored that goal somehow makes posting it relevant in this thread where we are discussing Messi's goal?
I agree that the stage wasn't as large as the WC, but Getafe are no slouch of a team. These are professional top-level football players, playing in a semi-final of a tournament that is important to them, and he went through them like a hot knife through butter.
I haven't seen another goal like that at this level of football in a long time...

(edit: argh, Zlo got in before. My stupefaction at the silly post was more concise though).
Zlatan 19-04-2007, 04:02:PM The resemblance with the Maradona goal is almost scary, certainly seeing it's scored by his successor
Sevillista 19-04-2007, 05:46:PM I would argue that a club like Getafe has a more resilient defence than a national team like England. This is nothing against England, it's just that club sides practice daily and play every week; the defenders have better understanding with each other. When a national team gets together it's hard to have that kind of cohesion on defence when they only practice together once in a great while and play matches even less.
I believe that most first-division teams in Europe could defeat the best of national teams.

pefan 19-04-2007, 06:11:PM Some of you guys are going gay with the Messi thing. Yes hes one for the ladies but lets all take it easy. Its a great goal but nothing worth losing bodily fluids over. :D
Vinnie Jones 19-04-2007, 06:50:PM Wonderful goal but i prefer the goal by Zlatan when he was still at Ajax where he dribbles most of his opponents with very little space. Don´t know what year it was perhaps the Ajax fans can give us a little more info on that.
whathe 19-04-2007, 07:00:PM Fantastic goal but I prefer this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yettxwUDL5s). :$
It has the extra flash like being the winner scored on the extra time when tension is in the roof and against their archrivals and sent them into final. Guess I'm a bit biased too but still.

april__29 19-04-2007, 07:27:PM was a good goal but come on man its getafe ok theyve got a good defence record but come on...its getafe
giggs in 99 was way better than that, i mean fa cup semi final, down to 10 men, captain off the pitch, the best arsenal defence with seaman in goals, extra time and a saved penalty. doesnt get any more high pressure than that.
yes messis was a great goal no denying that but its in essentially a meaningless league game.

I think this goal should take away any doubts (if there were any) about Messi being the next great one.

sorry my mistake. but the point remains that while a great goal it is its getafe theyre not exactly amazing. at least when giggs did it it was against one of the best teams in the world playing great football with and incredible defence and keeper. not with no disrespect to getafe fans a mid table la liga side. cup or not i dont think anyone would have bet on getafe to win that match would they?

Help? 20-04-2007, 02:02:AM I favour Zlatan's more actually because he did it all barely moving. Its much harder to defend against players that are running full speed, rather than walking with the ball and even though Zlatan didn't run half the field, he used purely skill to get past players, unlike Messi who used speed as well. Nevertheless, like i said, this is the goal of the season.

True, but then you also have to factor in the ability to maintain control of the ball while moving at that pace....
Anyway, we could probably go on about this forever :D

Clint Mathis, who the fu*k is that??:D Are you sure you didn't mean Clint Eastwood:funny: You make it sound like its something casual that is done everyday, but whatever...
Speaking about great goals, can't believe nobody mentioned Matt le Tissier, he scored "goal of the season candidates" goals on a regular basis back in the 90's, one of his memorable one is when he ran and dribble from the half way line and then lob the goalkeeper from about 2/3 of the field. Everything was there, technique, speed, control, vision and brilliance.
Too bad he played with Southampton for the rest of his career, one of the greatest genius ever graced the field...

Yeh he was gold, although his goal was scored last century.
This goal is good but its goal of the century, i doubt it will even be goal of the year. If it wasnt scored by Messi, say Ronaldinho instead there wouldnt much fuss kicked up about it
I actually think the same. Somehow because it was Messi, its Maradona!
Remember Ruud also scored a similar goal vs Fulham (H)
Ruud van Maradonooy

bjmenge 20-04-2007, 12:16:PM Seriously, it's ridiculous how much of a hard-on some of you get from Messi. As others have said, I think this has a lot more to do with who scored, rather than how great the goal actually was. I've watched it several times, and believe me, a great goal can make my heart skip and make me say "WOW", but this one didn't do anything for me. I tried really hard to find the "special" thing about it, but just couldn't. It's a decent goal, but that's all.

Meh, I don't see anything all that special about that goal.
First, you have to accept that that was a great goal, and in the same circunstance, that guy (Clint Mathis), whoever he is, would never do anything close to what Messi did... actually, only a few handful of players nowadays, have the necessary combination of skill+balance to score goals like this... but only very few of them, actually scored a goal that can compete with Messi's, in term of quality and spectacularity...
Second, if you're talking about this goal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHIY_8IXhms , well... that's nowhere near Messi's goal!
I reckon that, at the very least, Messi scored the goal of the Year! (H)

Messi's goal didnt make me go "WOW" either, but we've been through all that already.
It doesn't matter if you or Bjmenge, or some other guy thinks that the goal is "not so special"... what matters, is that for most people (including many football experts, stars, and former players), Messi's goal was the best in a lot of time... and many of those are people that actually live soccer, in a way that i doubt you or Bjmenge ever will!
ShearerM4 20-04-2007, 01:12:PM I'd accept that kind of "recommendation", if it had come from someone who shows that he's less idiot than i am... but you're also being an idiot yourself... =/

There are also "experts" who will say it was a good goal, but nowhere near even goal of the season. That's the point, people have different preferences, and you will more likely decide to listen to people you agree with.
PS: Negged.

I mean, when i first saw it i was like... :| and then i came here and many people say "yeah, good, nothing special"... i can't figure out if you have something against the player or team and you can't admit it's a ******* unbelievable goal even if it's not goal of the century, or if you're saying it just to stand out of the rest, or if you're actually giving your real opinions... :S
rpvankasteren 20-04-2007, 01:27:PM His second goal in that game was better.
Dream Team 20-04-2007, 01:39:PM are you guys really serious about the goal?
I mean, when i first saw it i was like... :| and then i came here and many people say "yeah, good, nothing special"... i can't figure out if you have something against the player or team and you can't admit it's a ******* unbelievable goal even if it's not goal of the century, or if you're saying it just to stand out of the rest, or if you're actually giving your real opinions... :SI guess it's the fact that the goal is VERY similar to Maradona's goal vs England and that's why some people can't appreciate the beauty of this goal, because it brings back bad memories.
ShearerM4 20-04-2007, 01:41:PM ... that most certainly is not it.
Dream Team 20-04-2007, 01:52:PM I don't know then. All I can say is I'm sorry, because it's a shame that you can't enjoy these things like I do. It really is.
Luis Ah-Hoy 20-04-2007, 02:00:PM What? Who are you? Please tell when I've shown you that I am an idiot.
"stop being a condescending idiot."
"PS: Negged."
I was actually being an idiot, but since the recommendation came from a guy that resorts to insults, i might just think that i'm not the only idiot here...
And that PS only confirms your idiocy...
There are also "experts" who will say it was a good goal, but nowhere near even goal of the season. That's the point, people have different preferences, and you will more likely decide to listen to people you agree with.
People have different preferences, that's correct... that's why we're having this debate. It would be boring if it wasn't so... someone has to disagree, someone has to have different views, to light up the debate.... (H)
Actually, it's not about not accepting different opinions. If someone doesn't agree that Messi's goal will come down as one of the greatest for a long long time, I would have to accept his opinion, what choice do I have?
I still don't agree with him, but since 70% of the soccer media, soccer fans, stars and former stars, experts etc.... agrees with me, I can safely say that, without having to justify my claim to a minority who don't... or having to add to this that my views are merely opinions!
When confronted by serious scrutiny and analysys, my arguments against you or Bjmenge would be more persuasive than yours against mine.
Even when the majority wins, they are not assured of the cooperation of the minority. So I'll just let the killing continue until the majority wins. (H)
Juventino 20-04-2007, 02:35:PM Messi's goal is amazing, but I think Maradona's 'goal of the century' is so special for all the other things behind it. It was in a World Cup vs. England, only a few years after the Falklands war, which Argentina lost. So alot of Argentinians saw this as an opportunity to somehow take revenge too. He also did it 3 minutes after he scored the 'Hand of God' goal, but after THE goal everyone already forgave him for it. It's a formiliar story...
Maybe 'memorable' is a better word for those kind of goals. They'll stick with you more when they have a story behind them.
OrgulloVikingo 20-04-2007, 04:21:PM Don't know if it's goal of the century, don't think so but it surely is a great goal and shows off his amazing talent. It's a great goal against the best defensive team in La Liga. That says alot. He seems like a real cool kid, nice demeanor and pretty down to earth considering his high profile. Too bad he plays for Barelona though:mad:
JJSFC 20-04-2007, 05:01:PM Too bad he played with Southampton for the rest of his career, one of the greatest genius ever graced the field...

No, because that is a skate scoring it. :)
ShearerM4 20-04-2007, 05:15:PM Now that Matt Taylor goal certainly did make me go WOW!
El Diablo Rojo 20-04-2007, 06:04:PM There's something about these different goals going past all the defenders or a 50 yard shoot.
Almost any slightly lucky player can score from a long distance, but it requires a very skilled player to score a goal like Messi's, Giiggs' or Zlatan's, and i agree that football is more beautiful when it's played by skilled people, like these 3 guys. Now from the 3 goals which are somewhat the same kind of goal, i still prefer Messi's.
Hopefully this won't get up his head.:nape:
april__29 20-04-2007, 06:09:PM yes the messi goal was good were not denying that just stating how over the top some peoples reactions has been. and everyone of these le tissier goals is alot better than that messi goal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-b01xfi1yI
Num Lock 20-04-2007, 06:26:PM beautiful goal, but i'll take Diego's goal any day of the week, i agree with a lot of people, Diego's goal was on the biggest stage of em all.
Callum 20-04-2007, 06:29:PM Good goal, I prefer long range shots, which aren't luck one bit considering the same people keep scoring them.
PaPaGeorGeo 20-04-2007, 06:42:PM Ronaldo scored goals like this every week back in the day, this cant be considered goal of the century. As I said before had it have been any other player, no real fuss would have been kicked up about it
Dream Team 20-04-2007, 07:33:PM Ronaldo scored goals like this every week back in the dayIn your Play Station maybe. Compostela, his best goal, and that's it. People still remember that goal, just like people will remember the goal that Diego Messi scored last wednesday.
Callum 20-04-2007, 08:13:PM I really doubt people will remember this goal, honestly, it was a great goal but so what? It doesn't mean anything.
RuiCosta_10 20-04-2007, 08:16:PM I really doubt people will remember this goal, honestly, it was a great goal but so what? It doesn't mean anything.
jesus christ, it will be remembered because it was a phenomenal goal, end of, not because it was in a world cup, not because it was in the Champions League final, but because it was a fantastic goal, that will run the internet, will be seen lots of times in TV, etc...
Like i still remember Bergkamp's goal against Newcastle i will remember this.
Callum 20-04-2007, 08:25:PM honestly, if anyone saw it, I think James McFadden's goal was a lot better, he showed a lot of skill and technique with a chip over and volley.
Goal of the millenium my ass. Ok, it's a really good goal, but the only fact that will make people remember it is the similarity to Maradona's. I mean the goal practically had no importance seeing that it was already 2 or 3-0, it's against Getafe, who let's face it, no one except the ones who constantly watch *all-around* football know about (we'd be lucky if more than half of the people here ever heard of it), plus it's the Copa del Rey. Yeah sure it's a great goal but it's far from 'Goal of the Century'.
Dream Team 20-04-2007, 08:29:PM I really doubt people will remember this goal, honestly, it was a great goal but so what? It doesn't mean anything.Ronaldo's goal against Compostela was a league game. There was a big fuss, like this time, there was a big fuss when Zlatan scored that goal against don't know what team. People remember these goals. This one also is like a copy of Maradona's, wich was like impossible to happen until it actually happened.
The goal has been watched all around the world. In Spain it's all over the news, people are still talking about this goal. Now on TV they're showing the best goals of all time. Zidane's volley in the CL final, Ibrahimovic, Ronaldo vs Compostela, Rivaldo vs Valencia, Cantona vs Sunderland, etc. When another "goal of the year" is scored, this goal will be included in that compilation of the best goals, for sure.
Master Kush 20-04-2007, 08:35:PM For the people who havn't figured it out yet, most of the haters are Brits.
And we all know that most Brits are extremely biased towards anything English related, as one can see from all the so called better goals scored in, you guessed it, the EPL .
Second, everyone also knows the Brits have a thing against Argentinians and this is especially evident when it comes to the two goals scored against England by Maradona in WC86. And becuase this goal is being compared to Maradona's and the fact that Messi is Argentinian himself, it easy to see where all this hate is coming from.

Where did I say it was goal of the century?? All I am saying is that there is obvious bias here when someone downplays this goal and calls it average. Also, I don't understand how someone can compare a goal like this to long range strikes, which happen several times every weekend in every league.

You used "haters" to define the Brits in this thread. When what most of them are saying is that it's an above average goal, but not that stupendous.
Long rangers are the sh*t. Like getting a smack in the face, but in a good way.
night 20-04-2007, 09:11:PM Goal of the Season? A big possibility. Goal of the Century? Hell no!
Luis Ah-Hoy 20-04-2007, 10:06:PM how over the top some peoples reactions has been.
Yes... we're reacting "over the top" to a great demonstration of superior dribling skill, balance and technique (H)
I really doubt people will remember this goal, honestly, it was a great goal but so what? It doesn't mean anything.
Maybe, you and many Brits will almost certainly forget about the goal.... but the rest of the World (most of it), will still remember it for years and years to come, and will always hail that goal, as one of the greatest... today, at the Campus, it looked like everyone was talking about it... everyone was praising Messi... very deservedly, i must add!
I wil never forget Messi's goal! Like i'll never forget Zlatan's or Ronaldo's beauties.... and i certainly won't forget Matt LeTissier's beauties... what a f****** legend.... (H)
Long range crackers are very spectacular, and some of them (like Matt Taylor's) are unforgettable too....
It takes a player with an excellent shot accurancy and power to score goals like that... but it takes a blessed/very skilful player to dribble past 5-6 defenders (plus the keeper), like Messi did, and still manage to score a goal!

Yeah, i also noticed that... it's not a surprise for anyone, i guess...
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (http://youtube.com/watch?v=PUXFGuu2LUw) puts this goal to bed.
Puts Messi's goal to bed? I really don't think so... i think it was a equally great goal... maybe, after a careful and meticulous analisis, one would say Messi's goal was better than Zlatan's or vice versa... but still, there would be nothing much between them....
I really doubt people will remember this goal, honestly, it was a great goal but so what? It doesn't mean anything.
I'll remember it for sure ;)

Right, and you being a Barca/Argen/Messi superfan doesnt tint your judgement one bit... Ridiculous. But I guess that if people want to believe that those are the reasons people have for devaluating the goal then so be it, if it makes you feel better.
For info, I have nothing against Messi, and I think Zlatan can be an arrogant idiot. However his goal is easily better than Messi's... weird.

Dont be a racist dear. We should be discussing goals here not skin colour.
night 25-04-2007, 07:26:PM Let's rename this thread to "Post all the goals that were better than Messi's"
Vedran-10 25-04-2007, 07:33:PM No.
Rename this thread into "Lets not appreciate a wonderful goal".
Apparently, every goal is better than Messi's. People can't help but point out how it was against weak little Getafe, yet no one notices that Messi is still just a kid, and it is a remarkable goal, not just for someone so young, but for any player out there.
But keep posting own goals and useless sh*t like that, it's a wonderful thread. (N)

Or: "People who are too sensitive/bitchy/biased to take a joke and can't take the fact that other people disagree with them AKA THIS IS JUST AN INTERNET FORUM, LIGHTEN UP FFS!"
Adidas is starting a campaign on Messi's goal

Some guys here aren't really joking.... and some jokes, aren't really that funny!
And if one disagrees with something, he generally has to use evidence to strengthen his arguments (in this case: that Messi's goal wasn't anything special)... well, some guys are using their evidences... but for me and some others here, they're not convincing at all... so, they can argue at will.... but i think we also have the right to argue back.... so, basically, that's that..... :mexican:

I'm not being bitchy. I can accept that people disagree with Messi's goal being the best and everything, but I don't approve of the way some are "arguing". With those who simply disagreed and left it at that, even by posting a better goal, I'm ok with. I know it's all a matter of taste and that's fine. But posting random goals found online, that are not special for anything, is stupid and it makes this thread a mockery.
btw if you can't post two consecutive posts that aren't "I'm having a laugh, this is an internet forum hahaha", don't mind me for doing so. Come to think of it, I don't remember the last time I read a serious post from you, one that actually had content worth reading for more than a few seconds, and I don't say anything about it because it's none of my concern and I could care less. So I'd appreciate it if you didn't comment on my posts. Apparently it's become a violation around here to actually want a thread that isn't filled with BS.
I wanted a clean thread for a change, and not only did that not happen, but a lot of people also decided to mock a spectacular goal for no apparent reason. I don't have to be biased to have a problem with that.

I wasn't really referring to you as one of the bitchy ones. ;)
And I couldn't care less what you think of my posting, I'm not here to impress you or anyone with essay-length replies.

we are not here to impress anyone either... we're just giving our opinions, replying to others and applying our own judgments, just like you or anyone else in these forums.... :)
