haregreves is number 17 i think.

so does everyone think we can win it again next season?
we have a great new midfeilder, anderson. some of the tricks he can do are top class.

As far as I know, the home and away jerseys are due to be changed. I'm not sure exactly whether it's the white or blue one that's being replaced but I'd have thought the white one is the most likely and the blue will remain our third.

Hargreaves has not officially signed till July 1 (neither have Anderson or Nani - though it's pretty much a formality they will) As far as I know, squad numbers have not yet been allocated. And if Richardson does go, I'd expect Hargreaves to stick with #23

Anderson is an exciting player to watch, but don't discount Nani.

Daz

no, the blue one is third.

anyways, who do you guys think will most likely be the striker signing if we do sign one? With Smudger possibly on his way out...

possible options i've heard of:
Quagliarella (doubtful due to him just moving to Udinese on Italian ownership bollocks)
Gudjohnsen - proven in the premiership, solid signing
Berbatov - wouldn't suit our style of play, plus too expensive.
Eto'o - Highly unlikely, but with Henry going to Barca there's a possibility.
Anelka - also unlikely.

other possibles (hopefuls):
Torres (PLEASE before Liverpool get the fuc'ker!)

White is never 3rd. White is our official away jersey, just like red is our official home jersey. Only 3rd kits change colour.

Anyway, unveiling the new shirts next week would be too soon, they always make a coming soon promotion for the new shirts, where you can't see them, but you can pre-order them and that hasn't started yet, which is why i was wondering about it.

no, united had a black away kit before...and they had used the old away kit as a 3rd kit for the new season. but its already been posted before, on the official website, current home n away kit r a one-off...new home n away n maybe 3rd next season...DONE

Liverpool Secure Torres For £27m

El niño heading to anfield, pending finalisation.

£27m Torres heading for Anfield as Benítez makes striking move

Sid Lowe in Madrid
Friday June 29, 2007

The Guardian

Liverpool and Atlético Madrid have agreed a deal to take Fernando Torres to Anfield. Liverpool will pay fractionally less than the €40m (£27m) buy-out clause Torres has at the Vicente Calderón, leaving the 23-year-old striker to finalise personal terms before the move goes ahead. Neither side anticipates major difficulties in closing the deal, with Liverpool understanding that any percentage of the transfer fee due to Torres must be paid by Atlético.

Luis García is set to go in the other direction for almost £4m but although his move facilitates negotiations on Torres and would bring down the cash price, the deals are not interdependent. Liverpool paid £6m for García when he joined three summers ago but their manager, Rafa Benítez, is prepared to release him and García is keen on a return to Spain to play for the club where he spent a successful season in 2002-03, scoring nine times in 30 games.

Although Atlético fans protested against the sale of Torres - the captain, standard-bearer and the player they have called The Kid since he made his debut at 16 - the club have decided it is time to cash in on their greatest asset. "No one is irreplaceable," said their major shareholder, Miguel Angel Gil Marín. "We have to build a competitive team and no one player, however good he is, can achieve our objectives on his own. Last time I spoke to Fernando he said he was staying but I can't prevent him having a change of heart and I have to be prepared for that."

Atlético have previously had to withstand an offer from Tottenham and informal approaches from Chelsea for Torres, but agreed to drop Torres's buy-out clause from €90m to €40m this summer to facilitate a move. They are keen on a cash injection and Torres has grown tired of waiting to fulfil his dream of playing in Europe for the club. He has always insisted he does not want to play for another Spanish team and is an admirer of the Premiership.

"If I left Spain I'd like to go to England, because it's interesting and because the way they play in Italy's not so attractive," he said 18 months ago. Liverpool wanted to offer Djibril Cissé as part of the deal but the Frenchman rejected the move. Torres scored 14 league goals last season, taking him to 75 in five top-flight seasons.

Liverpool have signed the 18-year-old Athletic Bilbao defender Mikel San José for £270,000 and given their 22-year-old midfielder Mohamed Sissoko a new four-year contract.

Last seasons was impressive, but this looks great, none of usual fancy Nike bollocks such as the white/black lines, ticks around the waste, sleeves and shoulders, AIG logo seems a bit smaller which is also a plus.

Rooney was given number 10 shirt.

29-06-2007, 08:38:PM
I haven't seen the Torres news anywhere at all. At least not on any real newsworthy websites, plus that article from Guardian just has a bunch of deal information and quotes from a year ago. But for 27 million pounds, he can go to Haiti for all i care. He had a poor season in a league like La Liga where Ruud looks like quite a sprinter.

As for the away shirt, United always had a shirt that's white every season, our traditional colours are red and white, which is why i consider red as home, white as away (since it never changes) and all the other colours like green/yellow, blue, gold, black etc. as 3rd jersey colours.

Rooney will now swtich the number on his Manchester United shirt from eight to ten, and is looking to emulate legend Denis Law.

Think your right about him going to city...

Eriksson set to take Man City job
Sven-Goran Eriksson has agreed a three-year contract in principle to take over as Manchester City manager.

City's prospective new owner, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, made Eriksson his top managerial target and is understood to have made a £50m transfer fund available to Eriksson.

didnt know about that, Huntelaar would be a nice target for city. Either case its defo going to get interesting in the derby

For 4m for one season it isn't too bad, if he doesn't work out we havn't lost too much, although Im not sure how he would fit into our starting line up and whether he would be prefered to Rooney. Hopefully he won't have an unsettling effect like Veron, where we signed a played we didn't really need and then tried to fit him in.

Nope, eventually Anderson and Nani are going to replace Scholes and Giggs. Then who will be sitting on the bench ? In times when players are injured we could employ a 5 man midfield with one striker. It's not going to be a wasteful squad, just a one with great depth, what we need. Young effective players ready to come on from the bench and develop, like Ronaldo in his first season with us....

Buddy, there are about 60 games on the campaign.

Plus, Park and Fletcher are not going to be part of the main puzzle anymore. And we know how injuries always happen to hit us at some point. 7 or 8 players for 4 or 5 positions is not that bad of a deal.

On further reading though, unless we buy Tevez outright from Joorabchian, I wouldn't go near Tevez the thought of the title being decided in a courtroom doesn't appeal to me. It seems West Ham may still be in the trouble over him.

Wow, I love how we don't wait long and just buy without big transfer sagas (like in previous seasons). I wonder who will go, Smith, Richardson, Heinze?

well wow didn't think it would happen, guess they learn t from the last few season's of leaving things too late.

With Tevez and Rooney up front, where do you fit Hargreaves, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Ronaldo, Anderson, Nani , Park and Fletcher lol, Theres going to be some big egos keeping the bench warm.

The way I see it we finally got quality players to mix around all the competitions. Thats what screwed us in Europe, when are players got tired, we just ran out of steam to some degree, the players could only keep going & playing how they were for so long. All the injuries etc.

Dont want to jinx it, but dare I say it. This team looks like it might mimic that of the treble winners?

Will have too see how they Gel pre season.

I've always wondered what that scar was on his face. Makes him look like hes a mafia mobster or something.

Tevez has a distinctive scar from the right ear, down his neck to his chest. This occurred when he was ten months old while he was exploring the terrain of his mother’s kitchen floor he inadvertently pulled a kettle of boiling water over himself. This caused third-degree burns to the right side of his face, neck and chest and left him in intensive care for almost two months. Today the scars are a visible signature of Tevez, who refused an offer from his Boca Juniors to have them cosmetically improved, saying that the scars were a part of who he was in the past and who he is today.

I'm impressed he turned down cosmetics for such a scar, most footballers r so self indulged. I like this guy he seems hardcore, no nonsense player. Him and rooney upfront is going to be top.

United will take their summer buying past the £70m mark, confirming them as the biggest spenders in world football.

eek hope we don't get branded for being like chelsea, finally splashed out on some big cash. I guess the difference it the majority of your signings are young players. We spend 40, get 2 young up and coming stars. Chelsea buy some old player who's done class.

I guess each method has its own problems, hope Anderson doesn't flop after watching him recently.

Wonder if we will start to go back up the richest club ranking, think we dropped down to 4th after real, barc, juve

As much as I like the idea of having Carlitos f'n Tevez, how are we going to play with two Rooneys? Given that both players are not regarded for their pace or significant goal scoring prowess ( 20+ a season). Does this pin SAF into changing the traditional 4-4-2 ? Finally this is the end of smudger but is it also an end to Rossi United career?

I think one big barrier that need's to be knocked down now is the language barrier between the new signings, and integrating them into each other's style of play. Within 2 years they will most likely gel together, know a bit of English and be adapting to the team and English style of play. Ronaldo's best years came 2years+ after he joined Man Utd, so this is a team to watch for the future. God forbid any major injuries to the side, and this team could be awesome.

Magnusson fully expects Tevez, who is currently on international duty playing in the Copa America, to return to West Ham ahead of next season.

"Carlos Tevez is a registered West Ham United player, contracted to the club until June 2010," he said in a statement on the club's official website.

"There is no agreement with West Ham United for Carlos Tevez to leave the club and we expect him to return in time for next season's preparations.

"No decision on his future can be reached without the agreement of West Ham United."

Any deal which takes Tevez to Manchester United will be under scrutiny from the Premier League and they will likely back West Ham in their stance.

Owen Hargreaves would suit the number 8 shirt and Anderson would suit the number 12 shirt, in my opinion. Or if Rooney was still number 8, I'd give the number 10 shirt to Owen Hargreaves.
Personally, if we get Tevez, number 8 would suit him.

I have MUTV anyway, I'm always watching it, so hopefully we'll know what the squad numbers will be.

As for my view on the new kit, well, at first I didn't like them to be honest, I would of prefered to have kept the crest around the badge, but now they're alright and I'm getting the blue keeper kit for definite. I do not like the new EPL lettering and numbering, though, but still.

They don't put any new stuff on, I want to hear interviews and footage of the new signings. Instead I put it on and find a game from the 90's. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind watchin a few old classic's every once in awhile, but it's a bit annoying. I also don't like the fact you have to pay for the channel, then when its 4am and nothing's on tv, you turn it onto MUTV (which you have to pay a significant amount of money for) and there are them stupid 6 second ab adverts on at night. I've got MUTV too and think it's worth every penny. 6 quid's nothing for what you get. Crerand and Bower in Extra Time was worth the fee alone! Paddy Crerand is an absolute legend! Live reserve and academy stuff, plus all the pre-season friendlies too. Only problem during the close-season is that there's not much to report on. That's why we see endless re-runs of classic games and re-runs of the call in shows.

Disappointed with Steve Bower leaving. Wonder who'll do the commentary this coming season?

I was a bit shocked when I found out too. Still Mandy and Hayley have done an excellent job in anchoring the news and studio programmes. I wonder who'll take over the Commentating role with Paddy - probably Andy Dickman as he does the reserves and academy.

Also back to football, looks like the Tevez affair is set to drag on, the Premiership apparently are supporting West Ham :S Although IMO it looks like they're the ones breaking the rules and I'm starting to understand Sheffield United's point now.

Nah, I doubt Liverpool got any preferential treatment on Mascherano. Liverpool were actually the ones that put West Ham in this mess. Also I don't think Rossi will be sold until the Tevez deal is watertight. I think he'll see some serious matchtime for us this season.

Heinze: I've talked with Tevez

Gabriel Heinze admits he encouraged Carlos Tevez to choose United, despite interest in the striker from a host of top European clubs.

And although the 23-year-old's transfer has hit a snag, media reports today suggest the deal may be completed by the weekend.

Heinze, who is currently playing alongside Tevez for Argentina in the Copa America competition, told Icons.com he has held detailed discussions with the West Ham player about life at Old Trafford.

"I told him that he is going to receive a lot of help to make progress," Heinze said. "It is a team that gives you a lot of prestige, both personal and professional. And he is going there at the right time. He is 23 years old so what else could he ask for?

"It makes me feel very happy that Tevez might come to United. If everything goes okay he will be joining an amazing club. He will arrive to a team that always draws up the highest objectives and where your only concern is to play football, because all the rest is taken care of."

Whether or not Heinze will still be at Old Trafford to welcome Tevez's arrival is still open for debate. A strong of clubs have publicly declared their interest in the 29-year-old, who faces strong competition from Patrice Evra for the Reds' left back spot.

"I still don't know what I am going to do," Heinze admitted. "I'm going to start thinking about that after the Copa America. The interest in me from important teams such as Liverpool, Juventus and Real Madrid makes me feel proud, but I feel very comfortable in Manchester and I'm grateful for everything I've experienced there."

Argentina meet Brazil in Sunday's Copa America final (22:05 BST, Sky Sports 1).

Heinze is quality, love his get at it style. Evra does play well but there different sort of players, evra being fast more skilled, Heinze the strong get out my way sorta player. Would be quality to have them both on the team. Especially for rotations, keeping fresh etc.

Was our fall last year in Europe for example, not having enough backup. Be stupid to get rid of such a good player, especially as hes saying hes happy at united.

Foster is injured for the start of the new season. Ligament knee damage, he had an operation on it. Being a massive Van der Sar fan he'll be between the sticks, although Kuszczak is still a great goalkeeper, he did a great job for us during the title winning season when Edwin was out.

I think a few of you are overrating Kusczsak. I close my eye's everytime the opposing team has a corner or cross. Admittedly he's a good shot stopper, but he does make alot of mistakes. Foster has had a full season starting at a premiership side, and done a very good job of it. In my mind I imagined Foster competing with VDS for the starting role, with Kusczsak third choice.

Why are journalists so stupid and lazy?! If Heinze buys out the remaining 2 years of his contract, he can only join a club in a DIFFERENT country to the one he's playing in. They fail to check their facts so that they can publish some sensationalism. Football365 have carried this story too. Muppets.

Heinze will not move to Liverpool. The loss of Roberto Carlos means that Real Madrid screaming out for a left-back. They have Torres, but it Heinze is available, then they're bound to go for him.

It'll be sad to see him go. He's been great for us. To be honest though, I do think he's not been the same since his injury and feel that Evra does have the edge over him now. Evra has pace and can link up well in the attack. He's a bit suspect in the air but we can deal with that. We have Silvestre and O'Shea as back-up too.

But of course the whole sticking point is do they actually have any right to refuse Tevez permission?

This is becoming a major pain in the a$$. I wish United would just pay West Ham something and let Kia sue them (West Ham) for his cut. Also maybe we should just walk away and go for someone else. (Although guaranteed that Chelsea or someone will get him next year )

I don't trust the FA when it comes to United. It seems that United are always held up as "examples" when the FA considers cases. I point to Rooney's 3 match ban from a preseason match, Rio's draconian ban (when Mutu tested POSITIVE for coke and was only given 6 months ban) and the wimping out of hammering Chelsea for Obi Mikel (worth a transfer imbargo methinks) Not to mention the whole "drop the FA Cup for the Club World Championship" fiasco in 2000) As for tapping up, is there any more blatant example than Ashley Cole? Did the FA deduct Chelsea points? (and that was the first example I could think of)

Also how did the Mascherano deal go through. Does the FA really believe that Kia J would allow West Ham to take Tevez for nothing? (As West Ham suggested when they said they had "ripped up" third party papers. As I recall they didn't pay any fee. So Kia is just going to take a drink on a £40M player then? I don't think so.

IMO I think that the FA realised they've dropped the ball (sorry) by letting West Ham off a points deduction - or even have players under third party ownership in the first place and now they're trying to rectify it somehow. And if Man United happen to be involved then screw it they'll use them as the example.

This whole thing is screwed up. But the team that needs an in depth investigation carried out is West Ham (maybe not the new chairman) because the problems are at their end. If United believed Tevez was owned by West Ham (as WH claim) then they'd have just thrown them £30 - £40M and the deal would have been done.

I said this in the other thread but from what I've heard MSI contracts with Tevez can't be legally enforced as they are a restraint of trade, this is why West Ham have taken this stance. At the moment I would say the chances of getting him are very slim. It was a structured deal as well so I don't think we have 30 m cash ready to throw at West Ham if we want him.

Heinze: I'll take United to court

Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze is ready to go to court to ensure his dream move to Liverpool goes through.

The Argentinia is livid with comments from his manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who said earlier in the week: "I can assure you that Liverpool will not be getting Gabriel Heinze."

The player's advisors claim the matter is out of Ferguson's hands because they were given a written mandate in May to find a club, any club, prepared to pay £6million for his services.

Heinze was told he could go to any club who matched that valuation.

On Monday, Liverpool made a £6.3m offer for Heinze which was rejected by United. Reds boss Raphael Benitez is keen to get a new left-back and he is set to wait for Heinze, whose place has been taken at United by Patrice Evra.

The thing which is confusing me with this situation, is why the hell are we even considering getting rid of him!. Let Silvestre go if anything, it doesnt make any sense!

The oppositions goalkeeper was positionally awful. On O'shea and Ronaldo's goals his position in the box is awful, and on one or two of the other goals he could be to blame aswell. Great turn out by Man Utd though, good to see Nani getting his first goal, he seems determined to do well, always fighting for the ball etc. Good to see Eagles peforming well given his chances, he could get quite a bit of first team action next year. Sad to hear about Scholes being out for upto a month, it makes the acquisitions of Hargreaves and Anderson even more worthy.

Fifa are expected to decide on Tuesday as to whether the world governing body can help resolve the Carlos Tevez saga, BBC Sport understands.

FIFA have reccomended United and West Ham refer the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport - they will not look at the case themselves.

It's on Skysports.

As for the game, I thought Nani played well, bet Fergie wasn't too happy about his celebration though ;)

I got to see this Pique kid quite a bit in the under 20s and was pleasantly surprised by 'em. He's big, bold and very intelligent and organizes his players really well.

He just impressed me quite a bit in the games that I saw em play in, and I was wondering how long is he from seeing consistent first team action? Maybe a year? Or even as early as the midway point of this coming season?

He's really confident and good with the ball on his feet, man.

Whats wrong with that, the chances of one of them being injured is high. Good for squad rotation too. Hope he stays.

You can't really complain about being second choice to one of the best centre back pairings in the world, can you?

but it would slow his development, Manchester should loan him to an English team so he adapts to that football, then a 2-3 years bring him in. you forgot hes still only 20?

When you're a guaranteed starter at a decent club like Zaragoza in you're home Country, you can understand his reluctance to come back, he might be like Reyes and can't stand living in England.

i don't think he's ever said he hates our country. In an interview i saw with him a while back when he was playing in the reserves he said he was very happy in Manchester.
