View Full Version : Top guitarists
Kimikal™ 03-07-2007, 09:25:PM Sustaining the idea that SG needs a music forum, I created this thread to see your opinions about the best guitar players of all time.
I know it's hard to make this kind of top, but give it a try.

Of course I do, but Malakian -as kickass as I think he is - can't compare to the guys in my list.

agreed
champdave 04-07-2007, 03:29:AM . . . you've missed out Mark Knopfler!
Knopfler is definately my #1 guitarist. If I were to fit him into your #10 I'd probably get rid of Jimmy Page - great guitarist but not quite as "purely talented" as the others in my opinion. Mark has a very unique fingerpicking style that allows him to play both melodically, yet technically as well. You don't need to even go past the first Dire Straits album to hear fantastic rhythm and lead guitar playing from MK. And he plays a bucketload of guitars, whether Teles on backing, Strats on lead, his custom Pensas on the more "heartfelt" riffs and then his trademark Resonator/Dobro guitar.
Great songwriter, great vocalist and an absolutely brilliant guitar player. If he doesn't go on tour to support his new album this year I'm going to throw a fit and not play guitar again, as I've got to see MK play live at least once!

Couple of songs for people unfamiliar with MK/DS:
Sultans of Swing solo from recent performance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yU4rItUYSxg)
Brothers in Arms, 1992 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdXmmmaXUnc)
Down to the Waterline, 1979 (song starts on about 2:20) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soqe25jkP7U)
zlojack 04-07-2007, 03:48:AM BB King also deserves mention.
Eric Clapton as well.
Nimreitz 04-07-2007, 09:50:AM The most technically brilliant of course was Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols.

. . . and you've still not added Knopfler!? HOMO :p:D
My 3 favourite guitarists have always been Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana and John Petrucci
Seán D 04-07-2007, 04:03:PM No order in particular:
Kirk Hammett
Carlos Santana
Jimi Hendrix
Slash
Pete Townsend
Jimmy Page
Tom Morello
John Frusciante
Joe Perry
Randy Rhodes
Funky--K 04-07-2007, 10:06:PM What is it with you guys and Kirk Hammet? James is far better, he's perfection. No guy in metal can go thrash rythim so mechanical like hime. Kirk messes up his solos a lot live, and sometimes even gets out of tune and rythim. James's the songwriter, all the credit for the guitar work since Cliff's death goes to him.
My favourites are:
Blues: BB King, Buddy Guy, Clapton, Hendrix, Muddy, and the best: Stevie Ray Vaughan
Classic rock: Pete Townshend, Page, Knopfler and Billy Gibbons
Rock/Hard Rock: Angus Young, Ritchie Blackmore, Slash, Joe Perry, Eddie Van Halen
Metal: Hetfield, Dimebag Darrel, Zakk Wylde, Randy Roads, Scott Ian and those death ****ers from Cannibal Corpse :|
Jaboldinho 12-07-2007, 12:40:PM No particular order. That would just be too hard.
Jimi Hendrix
John Petrucci
Eric Clapton
Slash
The Edge
John Frusciante
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Pete Townshend
Brian May

Eric Clapton as well.
I can't believe it took 10 posts for somebody to mention Eric Clapton.
