View Full Version : The Arctic Monkeys

SlowSilver

How many people here actually like them?

I like a couple of their songs like Fluorescent Adolescent and Old Yellow Bricks but I think most of their stuff is the same. I find them to be a very overrated band, but everyone I know LOVES them. (:/) People always say to me "How can you not like the Arctic Monkeys?!" when I tell them I find them incredibly average at best. Most people I know just look at me as if I've commited a murder. :|

Also another band that I find to be overrated (especially by the NME...shocker) is The Enemy. Man, I haven't listened to such a boring and uninspiring album in years.

Thoughts..?

I agree completely. I don't find Arctic Monkeys particuarly interesting at all, it's just very generic indie rock to me. I do find a bit of their music quite enjoyable, but the hysteria around them is ridiculous.
The Enemy on the other hand, is just very generic, rather crap indie rock from a band with an awful, generic name and image. They'd be hard pressed to be any more unappealing. Of course, i could easily say the same for a large percentage of the current British "indie" rock scene.

The question is, will there ever be a British band as good/big as Oasis were? I don't think there will be, and that's depressing.

"As good as Oasis" - I'd put Muse as being "better" than Oasis myself.

There's plenty of good bands in the UK, I think there'll always be good, fresh talent around here and I'm glad of it. Even if not strictly Indie, bands like Guillemots are original and show that people still make good music nowadays, even if people wish to think that modern music is rubbish.

(The Arctic Monkeys earn a "meh" from me, couple of songs I like but I'm not into them at all)

Tom
31-07-2007, 12:38:AM
I quite rate them, but, coming from where i do, you kind of have to.

They're the best of the new 'British-indie' bands, the likes of Kaiser Chiefs, Kooks, Kasabian, Maximo Park being the followers if you like.

Not on the same level as Muse of course, but different type of band entirely :D

I completely agree. All these indie bands come around like every year, put out a record - an average one too, then disappear.

"As good as Oasis" - I'd put Muse as being "better" than Oasis myself.

I'd disagree with that. Though, Muse aren't really my cup of tea. I love Starlight, but that's about it. Oasis have many classics. Wonderwall, Live Forever, Some Might Say, Champagne Supernova, etc, etc... :p They also had the fastest selling debut album in the UK, and recently received the "outstanding contribution to music" award - that's something Muse probably won't ever achieve. Though I'm not saying Muse are rubbish - just not my thing. The impact Oasis made was far greater than Muse made.

Tom
31-07-2007, 01:15:AM
Muse have won best live band countless times, and best album a few times at award ceremonies all across the world.

Oh, and the fact you rate Starlight, easily Muse's 'poppiest' song as your favourite, i think maybe shows you dont QUITE get Muse.

No offence like, i mean Oasis are ace.

Fair play, Tom. I have indeed heard Muse are a great live act. I'm not knocking them or anything, Matt Bellamy has an awesome voice which is why Starlight sort of caught my attention. You're not a fan of the song then?

Yeah, I suppose it'll be the same with me. I didn't really like Oasis at first..infact, a lot of the bands I listen to now I didn't like instantly. I didn't particularly care for U2 for some reason, but now they're one of my favourites. But their first few albums are f'n class, especially The Joshua Tree - one of the best albums I've ever listened too. (Y)

I'll have to listen to Muse a bit more I guess, takes me a while to get into things. I love Bellamy's voice - which is a good starting point I suppose. :p

Arctic Monkeys plays good straightforward rock, and they are one of the few indie bands, I listen to, but they're not so special. Just basic rock. Muse is good, I won't ever say they're not, but it's not as much my style of music as some others. I like couple of their songs, and maybe I'd like them a lot, if I had heard them more.

Oasis, great band, so 90's. I didn't listen that much one year ago. Just to a couple of their songs. Then I saw Wonderwall on MTV, and thought I could try to listen to a couple of their albums I had. I completely fell in love with their music, and as you can see at my last.fm -profile, it's my most listened band.

Quite poppy, but Starlight is such a 'simple' pop song. Agree with you about Hysteria though. I think from the new album, Knights of Cydonia is the one song i'd recommend everyone to listen to, since it's a showcase of Muse's talents really.

Plug-in Baby, Hysteria, Glorious, New Born, Bliss, Butterflies and Hurricanes, many many good songs, hence why they're (at the minute) far better than the Arctics.

The thing you gotta say though, is that we all bang on about the Arctics not having enough good songs compared to Oasis and Muse, well, yeah, but they've only just released their second album to be fair!

I can't say I really like any of the bands mentioned here. I like most of the songs I've heardm but I haven't heard many. Muse has to be the best of the bunch, though. Mainly because most of the other two bands' songs sound the same.

Although I'm the only person living in Spain who I've ever seen like any of those bands (excluding Oasis). Unless, of course, they release a new video, in which case half of my friends start praising them, and their 'original, alternative sound', claiming that they've always liked them. Then, Shakira released a single, they all forget about 'em, I mention their name, to cries of 'what ****e are you talkin' about?' and I answer: 'the band you loved 2 weeks ago', to be replied to with a 3 second silence, and a 'I was just messing with you'.

My point is, spaniards are idiots.

I'm one of those who don't think there's enough interest for that.
And the obvious (to me) effort by some to create as many music related threads as possible in order to justify such a claim (that a music forum is really needed).... well...
Busted :p

Meh, I don't give a s*** really. But I know it would be too music-geeky in there and that that would turn me off from posting there. :(

Arctic Monkeys are very overrated. It's the media's fault. Still, I like some 4 or 5 songs from them, especially "This House Is A Circus".

Quite funny that the term to compare the band are normally MUSE and Oasis. Surely...both of them are much better bands than Arctic Monkeys...

It's a hype...a very big hype. In 3/4 no one will know who they are. I think.

Their songs are depressing, both lyrically and musically. Still, 'song to say goodbye' is one of my favorite songs.

We once performed a play based on the video for it... saddest drama classes I ever had.

Yeah Placebo are very depressing. It looks depressing before the lyrics, it looks outrageously depressing after you see the lyrics.

Still, I like some of their songs. Special K is one of my fav songs.

yep, like someone said - this band isn´t band - it´s a perfect dream... placebo songs caught me faster than silverstein or any other songs of another bands, placebo shows my life as it is - 16 years as depressed,****ed and psychologically destroyed ;(

This was on a youtube video of theirs by a self-proclaimed huge fan. Me, I don't care about whether the song is depressing, if it's good, it's good. I just avoid watching their vids because I hate the singer. Looks too emo, way way way too emo.

The singer is gay, bisexual.. something. The whole band is.

Same, I dont fancy that part of them. With the makeup and all :(

So even though Damien Rice is depressing in about 80% of his songs, you wouldn't mind him because he doesn't look like a poof? Fair play :D

I do not mind their songs, their songs are alright, the ones I have heard, at least. But in terms of videos, yes, I would rather see someone who did not dirty sanchez his eyes with petrol. I just hate that image of guys putting on make up. When they put some on,m they put too much on, it is like a weird statement: Now that I cut myself I should be allowed to look as stupid as I want.

And I have only heard one Rice song, anhd really liked it, anyone want to recommend some of his other songs?
