Why in the world was DC United invited over Houston Dynamo who reached the final of the Champions Cup and won the MLS Cup?

El Diablo Rojo
31-07-2007, 02:20:AM
Houston Dynamo was semi-finalist, like D.C. United, not finalist, probably they got invited and didn't accept and they came up with that nutty criteria for América.(:/)

The invited teams from the CONCACAF to the Sudamericana depends about the CCC, the winner of the CONCACAF is the only one who doesn't get to play this one the runner-up and the other 2 semi-finalist do, for example Saprissa and D.C. United before, Pachuica however, was an exception this year because they won this the last time and also won the CCC this year. The MLS Cup has no relevance in this.

Fine, but, this makes me wonder why this cup is still called "Sudamericana"?

This cup is ****.

Out of the 16 teams that are not from Bra/Arg, only 4 qualify??? :nape:

Well from the southamerican sides it just depends on what each FA considers, and it ends up pretty unbalanced for some, if you see Colombia, Peru and Venezuela sent their 4th and 5th team(the top ones took/will take part in the Libertadores) Uruguay the 3rd and 4th(Similar the matter is that the 3rd went to the play-off but lost so it makes sense too). You may think, but it's alright but then you look Brazil has 8 spots, the champion(fine may as well ignore it) and the other teams from the 6th and below, i don't remember if the 6th took part in the Libertadores but the rest didn't for sure, for example Botafogo is the 12th of Brazil, which is not the point. Or the contrary case the argentine case which sent the top 6 teams, even though some played and will play the Libertadores(I don't know if River and Boca's case depends on the AFA or the CONMEBOL). Seeing the case of the brazilian teams mostly make me think that a second cup may not be needed at al, seeing as like other countries they are almost following the logic that should be behind this cup despite allowing the champion take part in both cups the rest are all different teams,l and evidently the spots hogged by Argentina and Brazil should be given away to oter countries. Ecuador, Paraguay and Bolivia also send first tier, Chile is a different case because they have a "Pre-Sudamericana" which decides the two spots, however it's played between first tier teams, in Paraguay there¡s a Pre-Sudamericana too but just decides 1 spot.

Uruguay the 3rd and 4th(Similar the matter is that the 3rd went to the play-off but lost so it makes sense too).

No, that's not right. No uruguayan team participated in a play-off.

In Uruguay we have a liguilla played between the top 6 teams of the league to determine which teams (2) accompany the national champion to the Libertadores and which (another 2) play the Sudamericana.

Did, Danubio played with Vélez.

http://www.conmebol.com/competiciones_evento_reporte.jsp?evento=1081&ano=2007&dv=1&flt=2&id=8&slangab=S

However CONMEBOL claims that Danubio plays the Sudamericana for finishing third in the liguilla(thought it referred to the league), not for being the champion, which in fact Danubio was the champion last season in Uruguay, but the CONMEBOL considers it was for being third in the liguilla not being the champion which should be the first instance other than the liguilla which defines the other clubs besides the champion. evidently for the CONMEBOL it isn't...

Wow this sure causes confusion...

Ruben Sosa

We're mixing things up, that play-off was for the Libertadores. I was saying no uruguayan team participated in a play-off for qualification for this Sudamericana, because there isn't one. That's what I thought we were talking about.

Danubio plays this Sudamericana for being 3rd in the liguilla, not for being national champions. The national champion in Uruguay only qualifies for the Libertadores, and plays the Liguilla to qualify for the Sudamericana.

I guess Arsenal can get their rematch this year, if they can get rid of San Lorenzo, i wouldn't be surprised if they reached the semi-final on the least.

But yes... Boca gets invited for being Boca, and so does River, which is less than Boca. However i don't know if CONMEBOL gives Argentina 2 spots for the Round of 16 and it's up to AFA how to distribute them, but i believe it's CONMEBOL which puts them there directly.

We're mixing things up, that play-off was for the Libertadores. I was saying no uruguayan team participated in a play-off for qualification for this Sudamericana, because there isn't one. That's what I thought we were talking about.

So Danubio should've finished 5th in the Liguilla to not play the Sudamericana?

So the first week is gone, here are the scores.

Audax Italiano(CHI) vs. Jorge Wilstermann(BOL) 2-0

Tacuary(PAR) vs. Danubio FC(URU) 1-1

CD Olmedo(ECU) vs. Zamora FC(VEN) 1-0

Real Potosí(BOL) vs. Colo Colo(CHI) 1-1

CD Millonarios(COL) vs. Coronel Bolognesi FC(PER) 0-1

Evidently this doesn't look like a good year for bolivian clubs, and the matches for the 2nd week.

Tuesday 7/8
Defensor Sporting(URU) vs. Libertad(PAR)
Jorge Wilstermann(BOL) vs. Audax Italiano(CHI)

Wednesday 8/8
Lanús(ARG) vs. Estudiantes LP(ARG)

Thursday 9/8
Colo Colo(CHI) vs. Real Potosí(BOL)
Universitario(PER) vs. Atlético Nacional(COL)

Confirmed that for the Round of 16, América will face Pachuca, and D.C. United will play with Chivas.

So Danubio should've finished 5th in the Liguilla to not play the Sudamericana?

Yep, that's right.

League positions at the end of the season only determine which teams participate in the liguilla. This results in Nacional (who were sixth in the 06/07 league with 45pts) and Wanderers (fourth with 53pts, IIRC) being in the Libertadores, while Defensor (third with 59pts) plays the Sudamericana and Peñarol (second with 64pts) doesn't participate in any international competition this season.

So... it's not that it's confusing, it's that uruguayan football makes no sense to begin with.

El Diablo Rojo
11-08-2007, 05:06:AM
Well but doing a thing like the liguilla to decide which team goes into each cup makes some sense, the problem could be the tight schedules and that the champion, more likely shouldn't take part of it and directly be sent to the Libertadores.

By the way the scores of the 2nd week.

Defensor Sporting(URU) vs. Libertad(PAR) 2-1

Jorge Wilstermann(BOL) vs. Audax Italiano(CHI) 1-1 (aggr:1-3)

Lanús(ARG) vs. Estudiantes LP(ARG) 2-0

Colo Colo(CHI) vs. Real Potosí(BOL) 3-1 (aggr:4-2)

Universitario(PER) vs. Atlético Nacional(COL) 0-1

So Bolivia is out of the cup already. And the matches of the 3rd week.

Tuesday 14/8
Arsenal FC(ARG) vs. San Lorenzo(ARG)

Wednesday 15/8
Danubio FC(URU) vs. Tacuary(PAR)
Figueirense FC(BRA) vs. São Paulo FC(BRA)

I've only seen this now, so sorry for not replying.

The national champion (Danubio), does qualify directly to the Libertadores, but not to the Sudamericana. That's why they participate in the liguilla, to qualify for the Sudamericana.

There are plans this season to eliminate the liguilla and qualify teams based on the positions in the league.

I'm certain a liguilla makes sense in theory, or in nations where there's actually a shred of organization, in Uruguay though it's pointless.

Speaking about the actual cup as opposed to the Uruguayan liguilla, I'm glad to see Defensor performing well.

They haven't felt the absence of the several important players (Maxi Pereira, Alvaro González, Gonzalo Sorondo, Martín Cáceres, Fernando Fadeuille, Carlos Díaz, etc.), are currently the highest scoring team and have two of the three top scorers in the competition (Carlos María Morales and Diego De Souza with 4 goals each).

Should they eliminate El Nacional, all the potential rivals in Quarter's and Semi's are difficult, but I think they're capable of holding their own against any of them.

Oh well another week of the Sudamericana fades.

CD Millonarios(COL) vs. Colo Colo(CHI) 1-1

Pachuca CF(MEX) vs. Club América(MEX) 1-4

Arsenal FC(ARG) vs. Goiás EC(BRA) 1-1 (aggr: 4-3)

São Paulo FC(BRA) vs. Boca Juniors(ARG) 1-0 (aggr: 2-2, São Paulo goes through on away goals)

Vasco da Gama(BRA) vs. Lanús(ARG) 3-0 (aggr: 3-2)

River Plate(ARG) vs. Botafogo(BRA) 4-2 (aggr: 4-3)

What's to be said about the argentine sides. Lanús tried but couldn't even get to score a single goal which would've forced Vasco to score 4, but Vasco was more effective and thus they earn their ticket to the quarter finals. Probably Lanús deserved a better difference on the first leg. Still this season isn't as good as it was expected for Lanús.
Arsenal was very confident after their victory in Brazil and they wanted Goiás to lose their patience so they could do their game, Arsenal scored a goal and was very close to score a second goal, right after some clear chances in a distraction Goias scored but it wasn't enough, overall Arsenal was the best team in both legs. Arsenal who is 11th in the league and pretty much out of the race for the domestic title will try on the international stage.
Boca suffered a lot with that away goal at home, São Paulo played so-so but they managed to make use of one of the very few chances they had in the 2nd leg, Boca could never get around the paulist defense and wasted most of the ball with crosses. I guess they indeedly miss Banega and Palacio, both injured. Probably Boca will now focus on the CWC and maybe try at the domestic league.(6)
After a week to forget River could make a come back from a match that turned out to be more diffcult than it was expected, River went through very tense situations after being down in the score twice, the truth is River played so-so but Botafogo slowly crumbled as the minutes passed and River could manage to score the 4 goals so regardless of all the obstacles River is in the quarter finals. And once again River will try to get a title on the international stage.

So, Arsenal waits for the winner of D.C.-Chivas. Vasco for the winner of América-Pachuca. River for the winner of Defensor-El Nacional. And finally São Paulo for the winner of Colo Colo-Millonarios. The round of 16 will finish next week with these matches.

Tuesday 2/10
CD Guadalajara(MEX) vs. D.C. United(USA) (1-2)

Wednesday 3/10
CF América(MEX) vs. Pachuca CF(MEX) (4-1)

Thursday 4/10

The semi-finals start today!

S1- CD Millonarios(COL) vs. CF América(MEX) - 7/11 & 13/11.
S2- Arsenal FC(ARG) vs. River Plate(ARG) - 8/11 & 14/11.

Some details to have in mind:
- If América becomes a finalist the 1st leg of the final will be played in Mexico regardless of the other finalist.
- América will be the home team in the 2nd leg of their semi-final, but they'll play in Toluca.
- If Millonarios is the finalist then there will be a draw to decide who the home/away order of the matches.
- Arsenal and River play against eachother due the current norms of the CONMEBOL if 2 teams of the same country reach the semi-final they must play against eachother, even if they weren't supposed to.
- If Arsenal is a finalist they would be unable to use their stadium(which only has a capacity of 18.700), it's unknown as of yet where they'd intend to play.

Millonarios and América are playing their first leg match right now, the mexican side is up 2-0.

By the way on another news, there could be something else for the winner of the Sudamericana other than the Recopa(whoever wins the Sudamericana this year will play the Recopa against Boca Juniors, the champion of this year's Libertadores). Eduardo Deluca, the general secretary of CONMEBOL, said, during the draw for Arsenal-River clash, something among the lines of "The winner of the cup should get free time in the first week of August to play an important match in another continent. This may be confirmed during the Club's World Cup... or early in 2008.". A rumour that has been floating around for a while is that the winner of the Sudamericana and the winner of the UEFA Cup would play for an "Intercontinental Cup". Another rumour says that the winner of the Sudamericana and the winner of the UEFA Cup would play for a spot for the Club's World Cup...:gavin: For now it's just rumours until anything gets confirmed.

CF América (instead of Club América) as diablo rojo so correctly posts it has 1 leg and 1/2 in the final, but I just have one very huge problem...that we can't even play in the Azteca because the morrons running the stadium have some sort of religious event going on that date (the 13th). So now we have to play in La Bombonera, Toluca's stadium, which has a much much smaller capacity but none the less our fans will travel the 30/35 minutes and pack that to it's full capacity. That last Libertadores we also had to play there vs. Sporting Cristal and I remember a full stadium, but still nothing replaces the Azteca.

Amazing how Millo's fans packed their stadium, really impressed.

But what is unfortunate is what the Chilean ref did to Millos by red carding a player in the 10th minute when at most it was a yellow card, oh well.

Arsenal scares me more that facing mighty River Plate, and I wouldn't like two of my favorite clubs facing each other in such a crucial game (:/), that would kill the enthusiasm, regardless I would want America to win.

CF América(MEX) vs. Arsenal FC(ARG) - 28/11 & 5/12, to be confirmed.

I'm not sure about the Argies, but Brazilian teams really don't give a damn about this cup. Sao Paulo's captain, Rogerio Ceni, stated that beating Boca was a matter of honor, but that he considered Sudamericana to be more of a nuisance.

Yes, as i said early in the thread the brazilians do what is supposed to be done send the 2nd tier teams, even though Argentina doesn't do this look at the argentine finalist, which wa 5th in the 06/07 table and currently 15th in the league, this already is a big success seeing as it is the 2nd time in their short history that they take part in a cup. But i think how important is this cup may depend also on the club if it is in need to win anything and has no other thing to play for. For example River who was 4th last season, maybe you could question if that's 2nd or 1st tier but let's assume it's 1st tier, were craving for a title, they didn't care about the name either the league or the Sudamericana was going to do it, as they lost the race for the domestic championship, the Sudamericana was very important for them, probably for the wrong reasons but it still was, of course no one dares to argue that the Libertadores is the most important tournament for South America. After all this is supposed to be to southamerican version, yet majorly flawed, of the UEFA Cup, however like i said more than once before maybe a 2nd cup for South America isn't needed at all, rather put the effort to fix some details in the Libertadores.

Also i had a good laugh when São Paulo got eliminated when all the idiotic media were naming them as the big candidates only because they defeated Boca.:hump:

By the way even though it was not confirmed there are unofficial versions of what is "the thing" that will be played in August, apparently it's a cup between the winner of the Sudamericana(this time it'll be the finalist on the least, because even if América wins the cup they'll play the Recopa but not this "Intercontinental Cup" since they aren't from CONMEBOL, so Arsenal will be the one to play this) and the winner of the AFC Champions League, and not the UEFA Cup winner like it was believed before, regardless of the teams it seems it'll take place in Japan, i don't know if later on different countries will be able to bid to host this thing like the Club's World Cup starting on 2009. However the whole thing is yet to have official confirmation.
