View Full Version : The "I think you should listen to this" Thread
We all know about Muse, Nirvana, Arctic Monkeys or what not..
But lets use this thread to introduce local/underground bands that you guys like to others.
Let me start, Butterfingers from Malaysia. Its safe to say if you like Nirvana, I think you'll pretty much like this band.
Girl Friday - http://youtube.com/watch?v=0rg39HioUEM
Vio Pipe (instrumental) - http://youtube.com/watch?v=4_6fh_IxcsI
Stolen - http://youtube.com/watch?v=jMVukTTl5mQ
what you think? (Y)? (N)?
Azrael 24-08-2007, 03:06:PM Good thread.
I dunno if any of these are well-known, but I've just never met anyone who has heard of them:
The Whitlams, piano-rock band, kicks the Fray a million times over, aussie band. My personal favorites are 'Blowing Up the Pokies' and 'No Aphrodisiac'.

One rule, please don't post about twenty bands, that'd be a really gay thing to do.
Anyway:
Reverend and the Makers
If you like the Arctics, you WILL like Reverend. The main guy (the Reverend) is called Jon, and he was in the original Arctic Monkeys band, despite being much older than them. Musically, it takes influences from such new brit-indie bands as Arctics and Kaiser Chiefs, but, as the band self proclaims, mixes it with regae and generally more unique styles. Also, the lyrics are second to none. The first single "Heavyweight Champion of the World" reached about number 10 in the charts, and the new single "He said he loved me" is out soon. The album is out late September. Seem them live twice, they're amazing.

Just type it on youtube and watch some classy stuff. (Y)
I really doubt anyone is going to be that bored to do everything themselves :(
I'll go for Team Sleep, really good ambient/chill/trip-hop band.

Zlatan 25-08-2007, 12:30:PM Chin Up Chin Up. They're one of my favourite bands. They're from Chicago and play some wonderful music. Everyone I persuaded to listen to their music completly agreed that this was awesome music. The best thing is they're coming to Amsterdam to perform no more than 250 meters away from my home in less than a month. Here are some YouTube vids:

Very good band...Hanging By A Moment is great, and they have the new CD out now too...I see the're also on tour with Goo Goo Dolls.
Jaboldinho 31-08-2007, 02:25:PM Sonata Arctica, a Finnish Power/Melodic Metal band, great band. Try listening to them, their best songs IMO are Tallulah and Fullmoon, try and listen to them and you'll fall in love.

Publishing national material around here. (H) Linda Martini is a post-hardcore rock band. 3 guitars, 1 bass and 1 FANTASTIC drummer...Sonic Youth influences are notorious...you guys should check it out.

EDIT: Are the links appearing? :(
RuiCosta_10 04-09-2007, 03:40:PM Linda Martini are amazing, the only thing i don't like it's the vocals, they kinda suck, specially live. Still an amazing band nevertheless...
They're kinda flying off the radar in Portugal, mainly because here people only care about popular music and music that shows on crappy shows (Morangos).. But they are still a recent band, so with time they will grow more.. I saw them live and i gotta say that, apart from the vocals, like i've referred before, they are even better, they put everything hey have on the show. (Y)
M.A.U. (Man and Unable) are also a good band, check them out on youtube, also Spartak and sUBMARINe are pretty good bands, but these last i heard to little. All of them are Portuguese.
And to finish, Sigur Rós, an Icelandic rock band, that is only considered as one beacuse of the instruments they use, they look more like the chill-out type, Glosoli is a great track.

Yeah, I know him, it's really good (H) I said that was the best in Europe not only for music things, but considering political investment.
These rappers are coming from blocks in Marseille and they aren't doing gangsta rap as most of rappers from Paris suburbs (suburbs don't mean rich districts as in USA, here rich are in city centers and working class from all ethnies are in the suburbs, maybe in rest of Europe too). Well, near Paris we saw some riots after police violence, not in Marseille. Rap messages are full of peace here, that why I said that was the best in Europe... But yes, I have to say one of the best :D Just look at this!

Nimreitz 17-05-2008, 08:49:AM I just stumbled into this band and I'm listening to their newest album, and it sounds pretty awesome. Anyone know anything about "Galactic"? They're some funk/jazz fusion/hip-hop band from New Orleans. When I finish this album I'll give my impressions, but every so often an album will GRAB me instantly, and this one is pretty much doing that.
Jaboldinho 17-05-2008, 11:15:AM Von Hertzen Brothers. It's a Finnish brother trio, and they play psychedelic progressive rock. Very talented musicians each of them. It has something same in it than Muse, and maybe Rush too.

Seriously awesome. Cross-genre mastery. Gets a little stale at the end because there's some similarity between the songs, but still definitely worth a listen.

Zlatan 03-03-2009, 03:47:PM I recently found out about this band. It was actually thanks to a blog post by Mark Hoppus saying Travis Barker digged it. The pliant fan I am, I immediatly checked them out, turns out they're pretty good. A combination of (alternative) rock with electronica, nice...

Mostly known by doing a cover on the Michael Jackson -hit Smooth Criminal, but they got some great original songs too.
Barenaked Ladies
Indieish rock. Haven't heard many of their songs, but so far I've liked what I've heard. (Y)
Disturbed
They're a big thing here, but I'm not sure whether or not their that well-known elsewhere. A good metal band with a unique sound.
Shinedown
A Disturbish Metal band, they even were the warm-up act for the band at their concert in Helsinki. Check out their songs Devour and Second Chance.
Dream Theater
Joe Petrucci. (H)
Hard-Fi
Brittish Indie.
Millencolin
Their older material is awesome. Skate punk -band.
Paramore
Their popular now, but if you haven't, check out their older songs. Before they made it big time. Some good attitude they've got.
1966+2006 03-03-2009, 04:28:PM Yup, Millencolin's a great band. They've pretty much burned out now, though. Their last album wasn't too good.
Disturbed are big everywhere I think.

MaSsiVe 04-09-2009, 02:19:AM yeah they're from NZ but I wouldn't call them a hip-hop group at all...for what it's worth, Wikipedia describes them as a six-piece roots/dub/reggae/jazz/soul band.

I was a bit slow to come around to White Lies and their debut album, mostly because how awful the lyrics sounded put me off some of the songs, but it's a good album. Reminded me of the first Keane album (although this is more guitar based indie than piano rock).

Fuzzy White Casters. The drummer's a good friend of mine and I just found out they're opening for Arctic Monkeys at MTV Winter and I'm really stoked for them. Generally not a fan of Spanish people singing in English, but their music is pretty good.
Hope they make it. Definitely gonna go to MTV Winter and see 'em (seeing the Monkeys won't be too bad either)
