ROME: Celebrated Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti has died.

Pavarotti had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and underwent further treatment last month.

His manager Terri Robson told AP in an email statement that Pavarotti died at his home in Modena, Italy, at 5am local time today.

"The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life. In fitting with the approach that characterised his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness," the statement said.

His family and close friends were at the home with the opera star.

For serious fans, the unforced beauty and thrilling urgency of Pavarotti's voice made him the ideal interpreter of the Italian lyric repertory, especially in the 1960s and '70s when he first achieved stardom.

For millions more, his charismatic performances of standards like Nessun dorma, from Puccini's Turandot, came to represent what opera is all about.

Instantly recognisable by his charcoal black beard and tuxedo-busting girth, Pavarotti radiated an intangible magic that helped him win hearts in a way Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras - his partners in the Three Tenors concerts - never quite could.

That's it, my spelling was comedy. Yeah i mean the 1990 performance is easily his most well known appearence/performance ever, but he should be remembered for much much more as well.

Definitely, man. You didn't have to be a fan of the genre in order to be awed by his voice and appreciate its immense quality.

I always imagined him having elephant-like Cock and balls, man. With a voice like that, you'd have a better chance of convincing me of the Earth being flat than of Pavarotti being a dicksucker. He oozed hetero atoms like few others could. He could seduce even a piece of rock in less than two seconds, then have it make him a couple of plates of Veal Milanese and baked spaghetti.

Nessun Dorma is just one of those songs, when sung by Pavarotti that gives me chills down my spine. It's just so absorbing and you can see the emotion in him as he sung it.

I was always a fan of Pavarotti, despite not liking Opera, i have great admiration for the enthusiam for life he had and for always carrying a huge smile wherever he went. He truly is a legend.

RIP
