View Full Version : Let's Make A Boot Together!
Keegan 11-09-2007, 06:30:AM Ok, boys and girls... this is as close as I'll probably get to a boot tutorial. The boot we're going to make is the Puma King. I'll be using the easiest method here, and I would prefer any questions be posted here, for the benefit of future bootmakers.
http://www.zappos.com/images/715/7155689/6219-123677-d.jpg
Pictures of the boot can be found here. - www.zappos.com (http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/28230752/c/7548.html)
Click on the link "multi view" and copy all the various views to a folder on your PC titled "Puma King boot". If you have not already done so, download my boot template from my filefront page. (see link below my Sig of the fastest man in the world.) In my next post, I will explain how to use the template.
Cheers!

Nice one mate... I'll do this.(Y)
Dipanjan 11-09-2007, 02:32:PM Asafa Powell is fast dude.9.74s is way to good according to me.
Waiting for the whole tutorial though.
Keegan 11-09-2007, 05:51:PM Ok, now to explain the template:
http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/9674/img1ed9.jpg
The template is for the most part mirrored, which means that it is used for both the left and right foot. This is why boots like the Joma #10 and Nike Metatarsal (:D) which have the left boot design different from the right do not work out with this boot model. The areas in yellow and numbered 1 & 2 are non-mirrored, therefore anything placed in these areas will look the same even when the rest of the boot is inverted. Area #1 is good for tongue logos like a Nike swoosh, for example.
Keegan 11-09-2007, 06:02:PM It is possible to determine which colour the studs are by selecting the colour that certain areas of the template are made. On the area of the template where the sole of the boot will be, you will notice rectangles in red, blue and purple. They indicate where the studs will be physically placed on the sole. Matching those, are other rectangles in similar colours. The green rectangle will be the colour that the tip of the studs touching the ground will be. The red, blue and purple will be the colours that the rest of the studs will be.
At this point, I would suggest that you copy the image above as a bmp file, open the player model in o-edit and select only the last part of the model and view the boot there. You will be able to see for yourself the mirrored and non-mirrored areas, as well as the studs colours and placements.
Remember though, all questions relating to this tutorial should be asked here - not in a PM. Stay tuned for further installments. Another thing, if there doesn't seem to be much interest in this tutorial, it will be discontinued. I have other things to do.
Misisko 11-09-2007, 07:55:PM Write several further surely or a dozen or so persons be interested, in this I
Because me shoes at all do not go out even, how I modeled on your shoes
Did not know this from then Jamaica's flag and I gave also :D
But I ask you do further this Tutorial
Interista13 11-09-2007, 08:54:PM Whoa, mate, I apprecite you doing this tutorial!
I would like to try my hands at a few boots, and this will really help! :D
P.S. If I decide to go into bootmaking, I'll never be as good as you mate! ;)
Keegan 12-09-2007, 02:32:AM Ok - I use photoshop, and my template is in layers. We are now going to create two new layers - one black, and one white. We are going to start with the sole. You want to cut out the sole and use a combination of the magic wand, paint bucket, smudge tool and the clone tool to get it looking something like this:
http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/9060/img2th7.png
Lemonman31 12-09-2007, 02:42:AM now that i know what goes into these boots, i have much more respect for u Keegan.
Keegan 12-09-2007, 02:46:AM You then reshape the sole, and get it to fit on the template. The white layer should then be re-coloured by sampling the sole so it looks like this:
http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/3430/img3wp5.png
It should still be different layers, though.
Keegan 12-09-2007, 02:48:AM Cheers, all... feel free to post your works in progress here, so I can see how you're doing.
Misisko 12-09-2007, 08:31:PM When more far part tuta??
I wait with impatience
Keegan 13-09-2007, 02:49:AM Ok - now that we are almost finished with the sole, time to go back to the body of the boot. We know the inside/outside of the boot, right?
http://img133.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img4fb9.png
So we go to the left side view of the boot. Cut the heel area with your pen tool as illustrated below,
http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/5990/img5sg5.png
and place it on the template twice, so that they fit like I have below:
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/8351/img6md7.png
Keegan 13-09-2007, 03:07:AM We'll hide the new layers with the heel textures (it is easier to join them and hide them for now) then on a new layer, create a black area in this shape:
http://img470.imageshack.us/img470/298/img7bg9.png
This will form the body of the boot. Let's put the Puma Swoosh on to end this stage of the tutorial. With the Pen Tool, outline the 'swoosh' and copy it to your template, as shown below.
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/7830/img8tm3.png
When you make the other areas visible, your boot looks something like this:
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/8024/img9ou9.png
Congratulations - your boot is taking shape.
See you tomorrow.
Dipanjan 13-09-2007, 08:40:AM so much work for a single boot??????
So u allow girls also.I htough there were no girls in here.
Are there any active girl members here???????
Girls don't like FIFA ,huh?????
Keegan 13-09-2007, 03:02:PM Actually, there are girls here - the user names are not neccessarily sexist, and while I can't tell you who the girls are, I remember a few over the years. I would guess that there are probably more girls playing footy in the USA than boys... at least an even amount. So they probably like Fifa too.
I guess now that more people see how much work I do to create a boot, they will understand my "NO REQUESTS" policy.
Javyol 13-09-2007, 11:09:PM Hey Kev,
Could explain how to use the pen tool in more detail? I know how to draw lines etc. but how do you paste to another image?
Keegan 14-09-2007, 04:01:AM You use the pen tool and outline the area and then you select the 'make selection' option off a right-click and copy-paste.
Keegan 14-09-2007, 04:16:AM Let's take a look at the heel area. Using the Pen tool, select the following area.
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/6746/img10hi0.png
Paste it to the template, then duplicate the heel layer. Hide one of the layers, then stretch the other and cut off the top so it looks something like this.
http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/963/img11qi6.png
Keegan 14-09-2007, 04:23:AM Select the eraser tool and set the opacity to 50% then select the layer with the side bits of heel and erase the edge that meets your newly created back-heel area. When finished, it should look something like this:
http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/7923/img12hs5.png
Keegan 14-09-2007, 04:34:AM From the second back-heel layer, copy the Puma logo by selecting the Marquee Tool and changing it to the Elliptical Marquee Tool. Select the logo and then cut/paste. It should be resized to fit into the un-mirrored area #2. With all the layers selected, your boot now looks like this:
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/5580/img13om0.png
leavemealone 15-09-2007, 02:16:PM it looks lenthy procedure, though i will make the boot after you complete the tutorial.
bybuti 15-09-2007, 06:11:PM great job Keegan :)
wonderful xD
mojacoz 16-09-2007, 02:01:PM i have a problem about the sole part.
1. how to change the stud shape from rectangle to circle?
2. Is is possible to change the position of the stud?
I done 1 boot, maybe you can give a comment about it ;)

Merseyside1892 16-09-2007, 02:45:PM Good boot ;) ... make more :D
Keegan 16-09-2007, 03:15:PM @mojacoz - that's a pretty good boot - there are some things to fix, though - the sole cannot just be cut-and-pasted onto the template - it has to be cut into two and resized individually. I've also shown you where the studs go, so those black studs on the sole have to go. I can't tell you about making rectangular studs round, as I haven't ever tried to make firm ground boots (in-game). Pretty good effort though, man.

wow! really good start mate! teh color looks a bit dull, but you got the point mate, please continue make boots :)
Keegan 16-09-2007, 04:36:PM Ok - here we go again. Now we are working with the top view of the boot. Firstly we want to cut the tongue area like this:
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/492/img14ln9.png
Move this to your template. Use the Pen Tool to select the logo and cut it out, creating a new layer with it. Then sample the colour of the inside area, and fill the area where the logo was. cut the newly blank tongue into two and resize it to look something like this:
http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/3305/img15fa1.png
Keegan 16-09-2007, 04:47:PM Your tongue logo should now be placed on the un-mirrored area, so that on either foot ingame, the logo looks correct. It should look like this:
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/365/img16yr8.png
Then we go back to the top view for the laces... it should be cut out like this:
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/3209/img17re1.png
Keegan 16-09-2007, 05:00:PM Move laces area to the template. It sould then be re-sized like this to match the model. The left area should be approximately twice the size of the right area.
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/2531/img18oq0.png
Let's look at the angled view of the boot now. It should be cut like this:
http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/3154/img19ya9.png
Keegan 16-09-2007, 05:13:PM Place it on the template and reshape it to look something like this:
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/5497/img20vu0.png
Now we need the clone tool to fill some areas. You then duplicate that area and move the duplicated area to the opposite side like this:
http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/7106/img22zz8.png
Keegan 16-09-2007, 05:27:PM Let's put all the pieces together and see what we have so far:
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/3791/img23vi2.png
Now all that's left to do, is the finishing touches. The last bit we did, needs to have the colour adjusted a bit to match the background. Use the brightness/contrast controls to do that. Next you can do a bit more cloning to get lines to touch where they don't - like the front bit to touch the laces, for example - all the while bearing in mind that the laces layer should be above the front bit. When that's done, you can merge the layers of the top and side areas of the boot. First merge the tongue layers and the heel logo layers together. Then merge that layer down to the laces layer. Then that layer down to the heel and side heel layers. Then down to the front bit and finally the side swooshes.the body of the boot is now one nice big layer.
Keegan 16-09-2007, 05:34:PM Now, to layer #2 - the one that shows you the outlines and stud placements - with your magic wand, wave it about and say "Alakazam!" (Very important step.)
then select an area between the boot body outline and the sole body outline and then switch to the new boot body layer and delete all that excess bit that won't show ingame anyway. Now it looks like this.
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/7028/img24xc9.png
Keegan 16-09-2007, 05:46:PM You will recall the white layer that was recoloured to match the colour of the sole. Why was this? Here's why you change the opacity to 20% so you can the see Layer 1 and 2 through it.then you cut out an area like this:
http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/681/img25gb2.png
Then place it above the boot body layer like this:
http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/2701/img26lk1.png
Keegan 16-09-2007, 05:56:PM Ok, almost there. Let's go to the boot images one last time and go to the close up. Let's get that "King" logo and place it where it ought to be. (No more spoon-feeding) Restore the formerly white layer to full visibility. You can now merge that layer with the king logo layer and the boot body layer. Create a new black layer. cut out the shape of the sole area. That should be all that is left of the black layer. Place that layer beneath the sole layer that we created initially and haven't done anything else with. Our boot should now be looking like this:
http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/6730/img27hv9.png
Keegan 16-09-2007, 06:11:PM Last lap... merge the sole layer down to the black layer. Then set your eraser at approx. 50% and merge the edges of the sole so it joins seamlessly into the background like this:
http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/5534/img28qx2.png
You can merge that layer down to the boot body layer now, then create a new blank layer. With the magic wand, select the areas that house the studs colours and fill them with black and place them above the boot body template and merge them down so your boot now looks like this.
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/4563/img29ea8.png
Keegan 16-09-2007, 06:23:PM The only empty area of your boot is the place I usually put my Jamaican flag. this doesn't show up in-game, kids - so don't make your boots and put my flag there. Get your own! You could put whatever you like, or nothing at all there... then resize it to 128x128 and Hey! Presto! You've just completed your first boot. (Using my tutorial, anyway).
http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/7075/img30finishedtutorialpuef1.png
Just flatten the image and save as whatever the boot name is. I hope that as a result of my finally doing a template and tutorial, I will see many boot threads springing up - I do not want this tutorial reproduced anywhere in any shape or form, otherwise, knock yourselves out, kids.
mojacoz 17-09-2007, 08:19:AM ok, basically i understand the process. but how about the one like adidas F50 or nike total 90 (the one like rooney wear)? the left and right side is different right?

Thanks Mate! Great Stuff.(Y)
Keegan 17-09-2007, 05:04:PM Ok, now to explain the template:
The template is for the most part mirrored, which means that it is used for both the left and right foot. This is why boots like the Joma #10 and Nike Metatarsal (:D) which have the left boot design different from the right do not work out with this boot model....
ok, basically i understand the process. but how about the one like adidas F50 or nike total 90 (the one like rooney wear)? the left and right side is different right?
I guess this answers your question.;)
Misisko 17-09-2007, 05:17:PM Great Job
THNX man
You are in this occupation God
Nods before you :P
Keegan 17-09-2007, 05:57:PM You're welcome, Misisko.
900+ views of my hard-learned trade secrets and not even one favourable vote? Wow...
SEYE2000 17-09-2007, 06:45:PM Respect to the master, now you shouldn't have so many people telling "Keegan, this is not a request but have you seen this...", or "Keegan have you done...will you do it? Could you please do this or that boot?". Hopefully with your help there should be more good bootmakers.
Respect to the master, Keegan Rules.
mojacoz 18-09-2007, 02:26:PM OK, for the normal boot we can use this boot model. so my question is, how do you make a boot like the Joma #10 and Nike Metatarsal? Really interested in doing a good boot as u keegan. Btw, working on my 4th boot now :D
farmboy 18-09-2007, 05:11:PM you can't, as keegan already stated. unless you want to go in and edit the boot model to fit a new template, but then you'd have to remake every boot texture in the new template, and keegan's library won't do you any good.
Jimbob 20-09-2007, 11:08:AM Excellent Tutorial Kevin, Easy to understand but yet indepth also..Great job mate..Good to see you keeping the bootmakers guild alive :)
Keegan 20-09-2007, 04:21:PM Hey Jimbob - thanks for the kind words, and good to see ya, mate...
hennersislegend 20-09-2007, 06:32:PM A fantastic tutorial Keegan, i'd never really considered making fifa graphics, but now i'm having second thoughts, i'll try a boot or two (and probably post them here for comments) and if they're good enough i might start up a boot thread of my own.
hennersislegend 22-09-2007, 07:46:PM I've started my first boot and i've been looking through keegan's old thread for the boot template but i can't find it, can anyone post it here for people to get at easier?
leavemealone 22-09-2007, 08:03:PM the link is on keegan's sticker
click on -"Download All Keegan's Boots on Filefront"
here you will get the template.
mojacoz 23-09-2007, 09:11:AM 2nd boot from me. What do you think Keegan? Btw, which website do you go for reference bro?
Kelme Champion
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a83/mojacoz/KelmeChampion.jpg
Keegan 24-09-2007, 01:06:AM Pretty good effort there, pal - but the back bit of the heel and the side bit of the heel should join more smoothly in colour. Also, you still seem to be cut-and-pasting the sole image unto the template. It won't look as good as it can like that. Re sites, www.zappos.com is pretty decent.
mojacoz 24-09-2007, 07:06:AM i'm having a problem understanding you. You mean we cannot just copy-paste the sole into the template? in tat case, can i divide the sole into two (side A & Side B) by splitting the sole right in the middle then resize it?

Keegan 22-06-2009, 09:29:AM Firstly, there is an area of the tongue that is mirrored, and another bit that stays the same on left and right boots, so that tongue will look messed up ingame. For the heel of your boots, I'd recommend looking at the default boots to see how EA handles heel designs. The huge improvement in models for 09 as against previous versions is what made me stop making boots for 08 even before I got 09.
Chalkos 16-12-2009, 05:12:AM Can anyone make this boot please?
