I went to my friends house who just got the Fifa 2001 and was excited to see whether EA Sports has improve the game. OK, the menu isn't THAT great as the one in NHL 2001 which is absolutely briliant. But when I got to the game and see the players and the field for the first time, my jaw dropped. Dang! Awsome graphics! The movement was fluid, the textures are well done, and I was thinking that people at EA must spent great deal to make these players and field as beautiful as this. And probably that just it. They spent too much time on the graphics and forget about the gameplay. I played with my friend for an hour and then I got bored and decided to play something else. The gameplay is improved since FIFA 2000, still it's a BIG downside. As much as beatiful the graphics are, they can't beat a good gameplay.
What a shame really, if they only applied FIFA 98 gameplay on those graphics, it would've been GREAT. I won't talk about the ISS gameplay, which in my opinion is the most realistic futbol to date, but they are from a different platform (PS) and different company (Konami?). I mean, I still enjoy playing Fifa 98, and that's like a 3 years old game. And this FIFA 2001 game, I got bored in an hour. There's something REALLY wrong.
So if there's EA sports guys here, I would like to make a gameplay patch suggestions. I'm no programmer, just your regular consumer (though I still haven't buy it http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif who like to have a better game. I don't know if these suggestions is possible technically, but I'll just give it a shot.
1. The shots vs goalkeeper
Now: Probably the terms Super goalie is redefined in FIFA series. Goalkeeper flying all over the place with 100% precision and agility. Why? Because the players shot almost 90% on target. So I guess the goalie is turned into a superman so there wouldn't be raining goals. In the real world, it took a very skilled player to shot hard and precise to the goal.
Suggestions: Make it more difficult to shot on goals. Make somekind of engine that determine the players ability to shot on goals. More skilled players like Zidane is likely to hit target so his accuracy is, say, 80%, so when Zidane took a shot on goals, the engine would determine whether it's on goal or not ( but most likely is ). Less skilled player would get smaller chance at hitting on goal.
2. The lob pass.
Now: The lob pass always perfectly recieved by the players. The intensity of the pass is sometimes dazzle me. This guy who has his back turned can quickly turn around and lob-pass to the player across the field in perfect accuracy.
Suggestions:
-Make it more versatile, probably like the power shot meter would work. The longer you push the button the longer the ball would be. A slight push would just tip the ball.
-And the direction can take a simmilar approach to the "random engine". Players with good skill can pass more acurate ,etc. You can control the ball while it's in the air ( I think it's applied in earlier FIFA ), so ppl can lob-pass to blank spot so the players can make a run for it, or just pass it overhead the players, not directly to the players feet.
-double tap in the direction of the goal would try to tip the ball to the goal.
3.The passing.
Now: The passing sometimes too weak, so the enemy can easily intercept.
Suggestions: again, the power meter would work. The longer you push, the harder you kick.
Bottomline : I say 'random engine' a lot, I think it's an important aspect on a game, keep you surprised. In fifa 98 I can make really weird goals, some are fluke, but some are as good as the real game. In Fifa 2001, goals are almost mechanical, there's some sort of way you can keep scoring goals, and they're all look identical. Eg. Pass the ball to the center, heading,..goal! A pass, run... goal! etc. I wan't variety, 100 ways to score goals (depends how creative you are) and still enjoy the game at least until FIFA 2002, NOT just an hour.
These are the only ones I can think of right now, but I'm sure other people has more ideas about gameplay o FIFA 2001. It's such a shame to see weak gameplay in such a glorious graphics.
I hope that the patch would contain some gameplay improvement. I think ppl at EA should now concentrate on this, the graphics are gorgeous guys, just the gameplay that needs a LOT of works.
what do you think?
