Yes, commentary plays a huge role in making a game like Fifa 2001 more realistic. In Fifa 2000, we were treated to minor improvements in the commentary but this game still lacked the previous spice in Wc98. Wc98 had announcers that tracked your team's progress and gave their opinions on the chances of your team had for advancing to the next round. This was really cool. John Motson and company should be made to say new and better things in Fifa 2001.
In most of the reviews that I have read, none of them state any significant improvements in commentary. http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/frown.gif
What I really want to here is the commentators making occasional errors or one of them giving a full profile of a certain player, how he has peformed in the league and the caps he has earned for his country. They should also refer to imaginary press reports that criticise or praise a certain player.
I think Ea has a long road ahead in terms of making a world-class soccer game. I would not just want to see improvements in the graphical aspect of the game or even it's gameplay, I am more interested in the less popular stuff that are often neglected. After saying all this, I must also add that Ea are doing a good job by placing those static linesmen. Do the linesmen move at all in the game?
