hi y'all
i'm new to this forum, but i just have to get a few things off my chest regarding fifa2001.
at the risk of hurting some people's feelings, i must say the game is a big time disappointment. let me explain: pure and simple, it just does NOT FEEL like real or even "realistic" football. i know it's been said a million times about the gameplay, so let me just say here that my beef with fifa is that it is POTENTIALLY an amazing game, but falls short of this because of the game design (engine) and its overly scripted nature. i mean, if it was HALF as scripted, the game would be darn fantastic. just think of the almost limitless possibilities, much like in real football. some people may argue that this is a tad hard to do, but honestly i think that EA have had a lot of shots at it and should have produced something far better by now. ok, so instead of releasing another version every six months, just take a little longer and make good work of it.
what really pisses me off with EA is that they have got it wrong four times in a row(in my opinion): fifa99, fifa 2000, euro2000 and fifa 2001. just to clarify, though: fifa 2001 is the better of these four titles. how can you mess up so many times? for me, the best so far was World Cup 98. don't they get any feedback? don't they surf the internet? and, more importantly, have they EVER been to a real football match?
where oh where are the cool skill moves of World Cup 98 and Fifa99? and i DONT mean the stupid 360 spin, which is totally unrealistic (and annoying when the computer uses it).
although i have to admit that the AI has been somewhat improved in fifa2001, this comes to nothing as the AI of the computer makes my players look like retards. the computer can intercept almost all of my most intelligent passes. sometimes i get the feeling that the computer knows where the ball is going BEFORE i even make a pass or cross. i guess that's because the game is so scripted. when i am attacking and there is wide open space and time for my players to make a run into space, they just stand there like statues looking like dorks. what is that all about? this is one of the things that really kills the game for me. i mean, what i want is imagination, diversity, not the same old move over and over again. where's the fun in that? we're humans, not robots!
And this is my main point: fifa is not a fun game to play, it is an ANNOYING GAME. it's not about being a hard game, actually i find it all too easy to win in world class mode. but even when you win, you don't really ENJOY playing.
take this example: i was playing against France in world class mode. i played a clean and patient game, making some excellent moves and passes. result: they kicked my ass 4-2, because the computer kept using the 360 spins and scoring almost at will. meanwhile at the other end i was hacked down about 15 times in the penalty box, and the beloved referee never even blew the whistle, much less award a penalty. i was just so pissed off at making excellent moves just for the computer to simply hack me down.
so, i restarted the game and decided to use 360 spins, though i hate them, and hack down the computer's players when they closed in on goal. i also used a lot of the cross-and-bicycle kick goals. result: i won 11-1. did i have fun? NO. did i play beautiful football? NO, not as good as the first game.
come on, is it just about winning or about having fun? i think EA still have a long way to go until they figure out how to make the game challenging without making it so scripted and allowing the computer to cheat.
