Famous Quotes

“Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that." Bill Shankly

"The English club proved that miracles really do exist. I've now made Liverpool my English team. They showed that football is the most beautiful sport of all. The Liverpool supporters didn't let me go to sleep the night before, there were 10 of them to every three Milan supporters. They showed their unconditional support at half-time when they were losing 3-0 and still they didn't stop singing." World Cup legend Diego Maradona who was cheering for Liverpool in Istanbul.

There's not one club in Europe with an anthem like You'll Never Walk Alone. There's not one club in the world so united with the fans. I sat there watching the Liverpool fans and they sent shivers down my spine. A mass of 40,000 people became one force behind their team. That's something not many teams have. For that I admire Liverpool more than anything." Dutch legend Johan Cruyff after Istanbul.

"Liverpool's fans are just amazing. The best feeling I have at away games is Anfield. It is just incredible. I love it. You get goose bumps when you see their supporters sing You'll Never Walk Alone." Arsenal and France star Thierry Henry.

"He's better than Platini, certainly better than Rumminegge and Maradona. For me he is the greatest footballer in the world." Graeme Souness on Kenny Dalglish

"Liverpool without European football is like a banquet without wine." Roy Evans

*YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver
Song of a lark.

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams
Be tossed and blown
Walk on
Walk on

With hope in your hearts
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone.
Walk on
Walk on

All the best for the 2008/2009 season.

By the way, anyone who are planning a 3-days in Oslo when Liverpool playing Vålerenga?

This the end of Anfield!!!!!!! how react the supporters???

Obviously it will be dissapointing leaving Anfield, but it is time to move to a bigger stadium. Arsenal did it a few seasons ago and now it's us who have to do it. It was really only a matter of time before this happened. Anfield's capacity is just too small.....

Dang, that stadium is pretty sweet...so when is it going to be complete?..

As I said in the post with the pictures, it is expected to be completed in time for the 2011-2012 season. I just hope that by saying construction, we can start talking cement rather than will we won;'t we. The sooner the construction starts, the better..............Portsmouth was supposed to begin construction of their new stadium under Milan Mandaric, a few years ago, but it never got off the ground.

Well, since so many people are visiting this thread (presumably because of the new stadium pics since we haven't made a real splash in the transfer market), I decided to post some more "views" of the new stadium(it's ABSOLUTELY STUNNING):

So, what do you guys think about us getting Cavalieri from Palmeiras?

He's a pretty decent keeper, and with Carson going to Villa, I think we need backup at that position. Comms here in Brazil say he's good enough to replace Reina, but I doubt it'll happen this season...

Definitely not going to happen this season, but backup like you said. And its definitely something we need. I'm also pretty excited about that guy we got from Fiorentina...can;t remember his name. He was, supposedly, a hot target....

Meanwhile, the Garreth Barry saga continues with yet another offer being rejected by Aston Villa. If Peter Crouch and Xabi Alonso are overrated, then so is Garreth Barry.

Well, Juventus are not willing to confirm they are still after Xabi Alonso. Their chief officer, Jean Claude Blanc, is saying that they've never named names and that they have a few players they might be interested in. Well, he's got to go somewhere if Barry comes...I can;t see Barry doing too much as a winger.

One more thing about the whole Garreth Barry thing is that Martin O'Neill has received criticism, from the fans during his Celtic days, for making transfer moves very late in the the transfer window. That means we could well start the season without the transfer being decided.

Peter Crouch is all set for a move to Portsmouth...we'll get £11,000,000 for him. Benitez valued Crouch at £15,000,000....perhaps that was too much. I think he wasn't given enough of an opportunity to prove himself and his hand was forced...he simply needed playing time.

Well, Harry Kewell was playing for Leeds when two fans were killed prior to a UEFA Cup SF against Galatasaray. As you know, he has recently signed for Galatasaray. Many Leeds United fans are extremely upset at this decision and have directed strong criticism towards him. He has defended the decision.

Meanwhile, we have signed a Denmark Under-18 forward, Nikola Saric on a 4 year contract, worth about £900,000. He can play LW, RW or ST.

Also Alonso had this to say: "I am very happy with Liverpool, the city, the people and they treat me very well. There are so many rumours and I prefer not to think about my future. I have always said that Anfield has been and will be one of the best stadiums in the world. The atmosphere is unique and the fans support you like no other stadium in the world. It is incredible."

So he's basically neither denying nor confirming that he will leave. The less he says the better....if there is some way, any way, for Rafa to keep him, it would be great. He is younger than Morientes when Rafa let him go....this guy has more time, at a high level, ahead.

of course they want to get as many as they can for Barry, since they didn't want him to leave in the first place.
I think this is just Villa's stance showing that they're not a feeder club(a club that sells its best players to the so-called bigger teams).

well, considering all the shenanigans involving Barry's transfer, its evident they're trying to change that. Btw, being not part of the bigger clubs doesn't necessarily mean that yer a feeder club, I'm sure yer smart enough to realize that. I don't recall Villa selling any big names in the past few years. This is the first time since Dwight Yorke, if remember correctly.

According to Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo, Lyon's Juninho may sign for Liverpool this summer. The article also mentions there's interest from Qatar and Japan.

Yes, he's a great FK taker, but I haven't seen him too much, he may be a bit slow/weak for the EPL... who knows....

He is. I wouldn't believe the rumor though. He's 32 and don't think he'd be able to make much of a contribution. Besides, he's a CM....no room for him in that position, at Anfield.

Speaking of rumors, I had read, a few weeks ago, that Ronaldinho and Eto'o were to sign for Liverpool in a blockbuster. Some rumors, like this Juninho one, are highly speculative at best.

Arsenal set to hijack Liverpool's bid for Garreth Barry?

It appears that Arsenal has done us all a favor and is attempting to hijack our bid for Garreth Barry. Rafa's reluctancy to offer, atleast it appears this way on the surface, an extra GBP 2 million GBP was bound to lead to someone else stepping up. This saga has been at a standstill for a while now. Maybe this will finally lead to a speedy resolution to the problem...err, transfer.

Even Hyppia would admit that he is well and truly on the decline and was merely thrust into the lineup, late in the season(when most of the important games were placed), due to injuries. Dan Agger WILL be better than Martin Laursen this year! Agger's absence made A LOT of players look worse than they really are. And come on....John Carew?:rofl: No, have to disagree there.

Carra was played at right-back because neither Finnan nor Arbeloa could counter an aerial threat anywhere near as well. Losing Agger was a very big blow and I think you'll see a Skrtel/Agger pairing will be much tighter. Hyppia and Carra just don't have the pace sometimes which is why they get exposed.

Maybe Carra isn´t the rock he used to be but he still good at marking, and Hyppia is trying to keep in team but i have to agree with you and say he don´t have the pace, did you see Hyppia in UEFA Champions semi-final against Chelsea?, he was a mess and fouled Ballack in the area making a stupid penalty.
(in my opinion he was one of the reasons we couldn´t reach the UCL final or run for the Premier).

Carew may have been better than Voronin, but I'd hardly say that he(Voronin) is/was remotely close to first choice. Carragher? If he does play, and it won't be as often as he used to, it has to be a CB because he's shown, even for England, that he isn't exactly comfortable at RB. I think that it will be crucial that our backups stay healthy so that they can be called on when necessary.

On a side note, Benitez says that he expects more signings in the next 2 weeks and to make some progress with some of them this week. Juventus may be giving up on signing Xabi Alonso. Paul Ince is looking to bring Pennant to Blackburn.

Match Report from the preseason friendly with Hertha Berlin in an almost sold out Olympic Stadium in Berlin:

SOURCE: www.setantasports.com

---------------------------------X-----------------------------------

Liverpool played out a 0-0 draw against Hertha Berlin in their pre-season friendly, with Andriy Voronin seeing his second-half penalty saved.

The result means that The Reds remain undefeated in their pre-season campaign, but with chances at a premium during the game it appears that Rafa Benitez's side are clearly still focusing on fitness ahead of flair.

Indeed, it was Hertha who forged the first opportunity of the game, with right back Sofian Chahed unleashing a powerful shot that flew just wide of Liverpool keeper Diego Cavalieri's post.

Liverpool, in contrast, were struggling to create any chances, despite their superior possession. Jermaine Pennant looked Liverpool's most lively player in the opening exchanges with some direct running, but despite some decent build-up play the game saw Liverpool head in at half-time without once testing the Hertha keeper.

Benitez's decision to change his entire back line at half-time worked to open up the game for Liverpool, with new signings Philipp Degen and Andrea Dossena keen to bomb up the pitch at every opportunity.

With this new-found attacking impetus, The Reds had the chance to take the lead within minutes of the restart after Voronin was dragged down in the box to earn his side a somewhat dubious penalty.

It was Voronin himself that stepped forward to take the penalty, but the Ukrainian was left ruing his decision when he saw his low penalty saved by the outstretched right hand of Hertha keeper Jaroslav Drobny.

The miss seemed to end Liverpool's bright start to the second half and it was Hertha that ended the game as the team most likely to grab a winner.

First, Cavalieri was forced to turn the ball off his line from a whipped corner, before being called into action again with a low save at his post to thwart a towering Hertha header.

The game came to a close with little further action from either side, but despite the somewhat disappointing scoreline, Benitez will no doubt be looking at the fitness and commitment of his players as a greater sign of progress at this time of year.

Benitez signed an 18 year old RB Emmanuel Mendy on a free transfer from Spanish 3rd division side Murcia Deportivo. Also, we are on the verge of buying some striker named N'gog from a French Ligue 1 team.

The first half of the Hertha Berlin friendly was utter rubbish. It was almost a sellout at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin and the atmosphere was almost Champions Leaguesque since the game really captured the interest of the locals. Hertha came in having scored 15 goals in their 4 prior pre-season games, including an 8-1 thrashing of some team in their most recent game. Both teams came out and created several good chances and shots on goal but after around 15 minutes it became a midfield battle with almost nothing worth watching. Carragher and Agger booting the ball up the field looking for the strikers and nothing happens OR run down the RW with Pennant before he gets stopped prior to getting in a cross.....that was a typical attack.

Xabi Alonso is back at Melwood today and having discussions with Rafa. It is believed that he is letting Rafa know that he "wishes" to stay at Liverpool and honour his 5 year contract.

Also it emerged that Alvaro Arbeloa has expressed an interest to go back to Spain for personal reasons - so he might be made available to a Spanish team.

And if some British papers are to be believed, then the fact that Robbie Keane was kept off the team sheet in the Spurs friendly yesterday implies that he is a step closer to moving to Liverpool.

Martin O'Neill has threatened to set a deadline for the protracted courtship of Gareth Barry. The Reds have been pursuing Barry since the beginning of the summer, but since Villa have rejected a number of offers, the deal has stalled.

Barry has been waiting in limbo while the clubs try to settle on a price for him.

O'Neill said: "We don't know where we stand at this minute.

"Liverpool have not officially come back to us in any form of writing. It is a really awkward position and at some stage there will have to be a timescale on it because we cannot just keep going on. We have got our own plans to make and we shouldn't be at the behest of Liverpool football club. We have got to get on with things."

O'Neill, who set a £18 million price for the England midfielder, is still hoping he stays put.

He added: "My preference - and hopefully I'm speaking for a lot of Villa fans, if not all of them - is that we would like Gareth to stay at the football club.

"Deep down we would love him to stay."

Same ****, different day.

Wow, if u guys do get Keane, I'm curious how you'll play, with Torres and Keane? Gerrard, Kite, Babel and Mascherano? I mean Kuyt is a striker but he's been deployed wide many times so it wouldn't suprise me.

But it'll be a bit narrow since Kite and Babel cut in most of the time when attacking. And yer full-backs aren't known for going forward with the exception of Riise and Ziege/Babbel in the past.

newbie original
25-07-2008, 04:24:PM
Well, towards the end of last season(when Torres actually started scoring) Benitez played:

4 defenders
LW(Babel?).....Mascherano......Alonso.....RW(Kuyt/Pennant)
Gerrard
Torres

There *might* have also been occassions when Kuyt played ST and BOTH Pennant and Babel were squeezed in somewhere. I think that Keane would be the backup to Torres that Crouch didn't want to be. I don't think he'll get regular time in first team unless Rafa goes with 2 strikers and that is highly unlikely.

Zakov
25-07-2008, 06:49:PM
well, I don't think Keane will be happy as backup, that was the reason he left Leeds for Spurs in the first place.

Liverpool is a bigger club(I mean more accomplished) than Spurs, but Keane would want ensured playing time nevertheless. He's not getting any younger now.

newbie original
26-07-2008, 02:03:AM
If not a backup, then he might end up like Kuyt....playing as ST/RW/AM.i.e. he will have to get used to playing out of position and sacrificing himself for the sake of the team, because I can't see him doing much else in a one striker system.

To add to all that mess, we've got this potential Garreth Barry thing to sort out......he too will have to play out of position A LOT *if* we get him. And there's some 18 year old kids (strikers) that Rafa has bought this year as well to make things more complicated. Sooner or later depriving some of these guys of playing time is going to reflect in a drop in their performance, and who knows what other kind of locker room unrest, aka Craig Bellamy.

Sometimes, I don't know what we're trying to accomplish through some of the players we get....

too true i dont think we need barry to be honest. i mean, our midfield is pretty strong especially if alonso stays. i dont think we really even need keane because torres tends to work best on his own up front with someone like gerrard behind him. during the euro he plaid best wen he wasnt sharing strike with villla.

I think Degen is the man for the RB position, but imho he'll fight it out with Finnan for the spot.

We really do need wingers. Babel, Kuyt, Pennant can do a decent job there, but not what you'd expect to see in a title challenging side.

newbie original
27-07-2008, 02:07:PM
Yup but that's what you get when you buy Dirk Kuyt....you expect him to play at ST and RM. And Ryan Babel is basically just floating around everywhere so I'm not surprised by his lack of consistency at any given position, particularly on the wing.

I also forgot to mention that Lucas has also to be thrown into the clogged midfield. I have a feeling that Rafa might loan him out because I can't see him getting regular minutes and I think that he has a lot to offer at just 21.

newbie original

Well, Spurs replaced Keane with Bentley from Blackburn. Apparently, Blackburn may target Pennant to replace him, which would give Rafa some more money to go after Barry. However, Mark Hughes said that his targets were Tal Ben Haim and someone else; he did not mention anything about Pennant. Rafa STILL keeps saying that he needs to sell players inorder to buy Barry, but he hardly seems to be making any progress in doing that. He says that he STILL wants to sign Garreth Barry. Barry will probably stay another year at Aston Villa....after that, who knows.....

EDIT: UPDATE

Aston Villa say that Gareth Barry will be staying at the club and not moving to Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Villa claim the Reds failed to meet a deadline to sign the midfielder and now any move is off.

"During talks in the past few days, a final deadline to conclude this episode was set that all parties were aware of and agreed to," said a Villa statement.

"This deadline has now passed and so Gareth will remain with Villa."

While Rafa Benitez remains dead set on capturing the Aston Villa midfielder, Reds fans appear to be less enthused about his possible arrival at Anfield.

Chants of "you can stick your Gareth Barry up your a**e" were clearly audible during Liverpool's 1-0 win over Lazio as supporters on the Kop sang Xabi Alonso's name throughout the game.

....there was absolutely no doubt as to what the Kopites were saying: keep firm fans' favourite Alonso and do not waste a whopping £18 million on bringing in Barry (pictured, looking pensive at the prospect of pulling on a Villa shirt next season).

And they may well get their wish as today's back pages are filled with reports of a rift forming between the club's American owners and Benitez over the affair that threatens to rip the club apart.

Tom Hicks and George Gillett have refused to release sufficient funds to finance the Barry deal, leaving Benitez both baffled and fuming is roughly equal measures.

But the Spaniard refuses to give in just yet and has promised to sign another player before the start of the new season - it just might not be the one he set out to get in the first place.

Well, Liverpool is a famous club here. But the Klanen (VIF-supporters) song "Dere ekke fra Liverpool" who means "You're not from Liverpool" (With Rammstein - America melody) :D That was fun.

Benayoun had luck, because the ball wipped up and hit his leg. Not being to patriotic, if you look on the combination of VIF-goal, it was the best goal.

Now I'm looking forward to the Premier League-season. :33vff3o:

I don't see with what's wrong with what the American owners are saying. They think that Barry is overpriced, and they're right. It's perfectly legitimate for owners to ask if the price is right and it's the best option for the club.

I don't think it's about you not being able to afford him. It's about Rafa trying to buy Barry his way and O'Neil having none of it. You can offer more for him, but the owners don't want to because they lose face, I think.

RW---> Kuyt and/or Pennant would be first choice, depending on who else is on the pitch. When all the players return from the Olympics, I can see Rafa playing Gerrard, Babel and maybe even Keane or Benayoun on the RW. We've got too many guys already playing out of position to bring in another RW......that part of the midfield is overcrowded. I don't know why we need another player for that position.....

I'd prefer a LW.

I don't understand Benitez's transfers, anymore. He's bought so many players over the past years, and he just keeps buying. I thought that any of Babel, Kuyt, Benayoun, Pennant and Gerrard could play wide, and do so well, and now he's adding Riera? Not to mention having the likes of Alonso, Mascherano, Lucas in the rest of the midfield, and a handful of capable strikers. And I'm not even talking about all those young foreigners he's been bringing in, like N'Gog, who one can only guess at as to why.

It's like he's trying to be the megabucks-spending Chelsea and not measuring up to even that. Over the past 3 years I've seen like 50 transfers in and out, and millions splurged on unproven players with limited success. I understand that you need a large squad if you're gonna rotate, but come on, you have enough players, don't you?

We have plenty of players like you say. However we do need someone on the left wing so we probably need to sell some players (like pennant). what might work is if Gerrard went on the right, and have mascha and alonso in the centre with a new player or maybe babel on the left.

In my opinion, he isn't as good as he used to be, but he has almost become a legend, being nothing but faithful to the club, always giving his all. Ok, that's enough......Mascherano did NOT set up the goal. His run was stopped by 2 defenders, who were NOT able to control the ball and a deflection, off of one of them, spat the ball out to Dirk Kuyt. He got past one United player(with a really soft touch, I might add given their-United defenders and Kuyt-close proximity to Van Der Sar) and crossed(on the ground) the ball over to Babel. Mascherano's "move" had been successfully stopped by the United defenders......he did NOT create the goal....if Kuyt wasn't Johnny-On-The-Spot, Ferdinand would have launched it upfield.

Indeed, that is good to see. 6 games without a goal was a bit worrying....

u guys just win by narrow margins
tht too luckily and undeserved...
try winning by huge amrgins..
like how united have beaten nottingham 8-1
and then i guess oldham 9-0

Neither of those teams are among the best in Europe. We beat a Champions League team, last season, 8-0.:read::read: Have a nice day kid!!!

EDIT: OLDHAM................Hahahahahahahahahaha ahahahahahahahahaha ahahahahahahahahaha
Nottingham Forrest........Hahahahahahahaha ahahahahahahahahahaha

It's always great to get a win over the bitters, but we have to be realistic in that we should be beating them most times we play them now. They simply aren't the Everton of old.

Good to see Torres back scoring. Think I might be tempted to rest him for PSV if I were Rafa, or maybe just give him the last 30mins. We already have 3 points in the CL and it is so important this good league form continues.

Thing is, if he does rest Torres, he'll be criticized for not using him when he's in form. If he doesn't, he'll be criticized for burning him out early in the season...

I think it's way too early to be thinking about resting players. Get to 10 points in the CL and then you're set.....just remember last season. It's the so called group of death so we can't take it lightly.

Kibe Kru
02-10-2008, 10:29:AM
Yeah, but looking at it now, it seems Bate and Cluj are giving their opponents a tougher time than PSV...

We're doing fine, and Keane scored as well... I'm fairly optimistic about this season.

We won 3-1, but it should have been by a wider margin. We should have had five. Lucas and Torres missed chances. We just really sat back after that 3rd goal and the result is 2nd place in the group DESPITE two wins because Atletico has a superior goal difference. When you're at home and you've got a team knocked down you just have to keep going for more......we seemd to hit the brakes too early.

Anyways, next opponent for us? The biggest club in the world......Manchester City.

After you beat us 3-1... don't you go around beating sides 9-0 or 8-1? why only 3-1? would that be because you're lucky and only win by narrow margins?

Stunning game! Obviously, prior to the game, winning was the only acceptable outcome.....and it's good that we won, BUT we shouldn't be falling behind - at home - to teams like this......especially when they are reduced to 10 men. We just shouldn't.

Kibe Kru
18-10-2008, 08:20:PM
oh well, they only got reduced to 10 men when they were 2-1 up, but I get your point. These matches should be won convincingly, not like this.

Torres will misst the CL game against his former team....going to be a tough away game for us, with that crowd in Madrid.

I think even Babel might miss it......I think Rafa will crawl into his typical defensive shell. May not be such a bad idea....get 1 point and get the hell out of there.

EDIT: On a side note....Robbie Keane...1 goal. Just hasn't worked out for him....even without Torres in the lineup, which is when you;d expect the guy to step up and have a better chance of scoring, but instead Kuyt blows right by him...with not just 1 but TWO!

Keane just been an expensive waste of money so far. He really needs to improve soon otherwise we just spent 20 mill on a useless piece of !@#$

And AGAIN we have another scrappy win. And this time its even worse as its against WIGAN. We shouldnt have to rely on 90th minute goals to get the 3 points. What would have happened if Kuyt had missed?????

Liverpool hope Steven Gerrard, Robbie Keane and Xabi Alonso will face Chelsea on Sunday despite sustaining injuries against Atletico Madrid.

The trio failed to finish Wednesday's 1-1 Champions League draw in Spain.

Keane is causing Reds manager Rafael Benitez the most concern: "We need to check with Keane. I don't think it will be serious.

"It was a little bit of a muscle problem for Robbie. Gerrard is okay and Alonso has a knock on his knee."
