Romario Linked With Inter Move
ALBERTO OLIVEIRA, RIO DE JANEIRO
BRAZIL (goalnetwork) –- Veteran Brazil striker Romario is being linked with a surprise move to Serie A giants Internazionale.
Local sources suggest that Romario, 34, will leave Vasco da Gama when Italy’s transfer window opens in January, to sign a one-year contract with Inter.
A return to Europe would mark a major change of heart for the contoversial striker. The former PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona star, came back to Rio in 1997 after a disastrous spell at Valencia. He said then that he would spend the rest of his career in Brazil and played two years with Flamengo before joining city rivals Vasco.
Romario has been back in favour with the national side recently, scoring seven goals in his last two World Cup appearances. He looks set to continue up front now Emerson Leao has replaced his old enemy Wanderley Luxemburgo as Brazil coach.
Meanwhile Inter’s new boss Marco Tardelli wants striking cover with Brazil’s top marksman Ronaldo out until the spring because of knee trouble - though Italy star Christian Vieri is expected to make his comeback later this month.
Tardelli had tried to sign Lazio’s Chile forward Marcelo Salas, but the complicated swap deal fell through as last Friday’s Serie A transfer window closed.
Someone needs to tell Inter's pres that he is really really gone off the deep end.
