I recently purchased FIFA 2000 for my PlayStation, eagerly took it home, dropped it in and suffered a huge disappointment.
As far as I could see, FIFA 2000 is a huge step backward. The graphics were not significantly improved, and they took away or ruined several of the best aspects of FIFA 99.
For example, the new Player Edit feature makes the entire idea of having player attributes ridiculous. In FIFA 99, there was a limit on how "good" you could make a player. Each player had a fixed number of total points that could be distributed across various skills. So certain players were just better than others, just like in real life. Rivaldo is a more talented player than a bench warmer for the MetroStars. But in FIFA 2000, there is no limit. Every player can be maximized in every category. So that MetroStars benchwarmer is the equal of international superstars. Come on!
Also, because of the player edit feature, why bother searching out new players. Just crank you current roster up and forget about it. This kills the transfers feature, which was another fun aspect of FIFA 99.
As for the graphics and gameplay, theres a lot left to be desired here:
1) The players look even less like who they're supposed to be and the goal celebrations are so stupid I can't even look at them. Rivaldo, for example, is depicted as a white guy with medium length hair! How pathetic!
2) Using the new pass arrow makes the game a game of pong. Passes that are green are just as likely to make it as passes that are red and vice versa. The only way to make sure that a pass makes it there is to actually SEE the player you're passing to. And have the time, the players pass so half-heartedly the ball hardly goes anywhere at all.
3) There is much less control for the player in almost every aspect of the game. I really enjoyed FIFA 99 for all of the options it gave and expected FIFA 200 only to increase them. Oops.
Well, there more, but that enough. All I can say is I'm going to think twice about buying FIFA 2001 or any other EA soccer game. Also, I know that the reviews are completely useless, since everybody who has reviewed FIFA 2000 gave it raves. They're wrong. If you haven't bought it yet, don't waste your money.
