If I may be so bold, I thought it would be fun to open up a thread for predicting/debating/bitching about who will win each league, who will qualify for Europe, and who will be relegated. There hasn't been a thread like this for a while and they used to be a lot of fun.

I'm going to limit my predictions to the big leagues in Europe, but predictions for other leagues are welcome and encouraged.

Here are mine, in no particular order:

EPL

I know it's not Europe but Cleveland got promoted to the USL-1 (second tier) from the third tier USL-2 at the end of last year.

Sorry, I'm just giddy that it actually happened here.

Mkay, off-topic, but that reminds me that this is a good place to discuss promotions as well. I haven't been following second divisions much, not even in Spain, so I don't have any kind of solid opinion.

Are you from Cleveland or what? You're an Arsenal fan, your profile says you're from Greenland, so I'm confused.

@ Sevillista: I tend to agree with you... I was thinking maybe Villa would get 5th, but I suspect they are pretty much heart-broken now, and will get another thumping or two before the end of the season. I'd also be really amused to see either of Newcastle or Blackburn fall (Big Sam's other two clubs.) instead of Hull City.

Financial problem is killing many lower division clubs in England. They have been deducted 10~30 points.

Darlington: Deducted 10 points - entering administration
Rotherham United: Deducted 17 points - FL Insolvency Policy
AFC Bournemouth: Deducted 17 points - FL Insolvency Policy
Luton Town: Deducted 30 points - breach of FA regulations | FL Insolvency Policy - Now they are relegated to conference. In 05/06 season they were in Championship.

AZ Alkmaar won Eredivise 08/09.
Actually only PSV, Ajax and Feyenoord won Eredivisie since 1980/81 season(79/08 season winner was Alkmaar)
Twente is on second place and Ajax is on third place and three games are left but AZ has 76 pts and Twente has only 65 pts so others have to do play-off.
PSV is on 4th place now and Feyenoord is in 9th place. Why did they(Feyenoord) play bad on recent seasons?

Dipanjan
20-04-2009, 07:10:PM
Great to see a new team winning in Holland after so many years.

Ajax has now just become a feeder club for the Big European Clubs with due respect to them.
So bring back Cruyff.

Actually, you can track that back to 1965. AZ won Eredivisie in 1981 and was then the first team to stop Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord's winning streak lasting from 1965. Those three teams have won it every year since '65, except in '81.

Lyon draw against PSG at their home. Marselle and Bordeaux didn't played 33th round yet. If Marselle win against Lille(6th)on away then Lyon will be really hard to win League.

1 Marselle 32 18 10 4 54 28 26 64
2 Bordeaux 32 18 8 6 51 29 22 62
3 Lyon 33 17 10 6 43 25 18 61
4 PSG 33 18 6 9 46 33 13 60

Hoffenheim lost against Hertha Berlin at their home(0-1). Now they are on 8th place but other team's 29th round didn't played yet and so their dream of European stage can be impossible(Reaching at least 5th place of league). They didn't won during 3 months. Btw Hertha BSC reached to 2nd place so they can still hope to win Bundesliga(First time).

Imagine, they are playing in CL next year... OMG

Amazing post by 'Generic Oval', with a Fifa sig.

Have you seen Grafite's sexy 'goal of the millenia' ? That alone should crown them champions.

Also, yes I want to see them in the CL, maybe you could make an argument if they were third or something but they are f*cking champions. They will be better than seeing BATE atleast.

Celtic won the Champions League in 1967 and is the only scottish club to do so. So it should be the most successful ahead of Aberdeen.

Aberdeen have won two European trophies.

Aberdeen have won two European trophies.

1 European Cup Winners Cup and 1 European Super Cup. Yes they have more European trophies but the CL is definitely more prestigious than these 2.

I don't give a damn

Well I see them spending a lot of money in the summer, you know they are owned by Volkswagen.

edit:

Top 5 goal scorers (The first number is matches played, the second goals scored and the third are assists)

1. Grafite VfL Wolfsburg 25 28 8
2. Edin Dzeko VfL Wolfsburg 32 26 7
3. Mario Gomez VfB Stuttgart 32 24 8
4. Patrick Helmes Bayer Leverkusen 34 21 5
5. Vedad Ibisevic 1899 Hoffenheim 17 18 6

Wolfsburg's scoring record is impressive, and the Bundesliga as a whole this season.

The Bundesliga has really impressed me this year. Over the course of the season, there was 5 different contenders for the title.

Poor old lady... :( Does she go elsewhere to... you know...

defeat opponents?

Alan Shearer had this to say about Newcastle:
"We've got one left-back and one right-back at the football club. It doesn't take a genius to work out that you need more than that.

Out of a squad of what size? No wonder...

The English Premier League as a whole has next to NO DEPTH...other than a few teams!!! Once you get past the Big 4, the "quality of opposition" factor experiences a steep drop off. You just cannot rely on any of those trailing teams to pose much of a threat to the the Champions League teams....you just can't. Because they won't. It doesn't matter if you get your hopes up that a rival, that you're chasing, has to deal with injuries and yellow cards......if they are a top4 team, they will NOT be beaten by the trailing teams in the big games. Those weaker teams are so weak that they WILL find a way to lose. The league just doesn't have the kind of depth that people seem to suggest it does. Aston Villa, Tottenham, Everton and City just aren't up to snuff and quite frankly cannot be depended on to dislodge, or even present a sizeable challenge, to any of the Big 4.

You won't get that in Italy.....AC Milan had hopes of catching Inter...ok, they may have not had a realistic chance of catching but they could have atleast put the pressure on Inter by wining their games.....yet they've had trouble against teams other than Juve or Inter. Even Real Madrid in Spain, especially over the last few weeks, struggled to keep the pressure on Barca....lesser teams are challenging them AND BEATING THEM! You just can't expect that to happen in England.

Italy has a couple of teams (Fiorentina being one, though they've returned) that have spent themselves into oblivion trying it. England has Leeds. Parma will be back in Serie A next year but they and Lazio are shells of what they once were from chasing waterfalls. Como and Perlugia may never be back above Serie C.

You have to be intelligent when trying to ascend. Like Fulham, Everton and Villa. Granted the latter two were big clubs anyway, they did have to reload. Fulham have come close to the edge a couple of times but seem to have their house in order. If things go tits up, City will be in a lot of trouble.

Newcastle is a case of extreme mismanagement that traces back to the sacking of Sir Bobby. They'll have a harder go of it than Boro or WBA next season.

You can beat the big teams, that's great, Bolton used to be specialists at it - there was even a brief period where Man Utd feared Bolton above Liverpool and Chelsea, but Bolton always used to finish 16th. It's about doing work all season, not charging up and taking Arsenal's scalp but wearing yourself out then getting tonked by Hull.

Newcastle have 15 players on +50k per week, there's no way they'll come back instantly. unless they sell almost everyone and a massive overhaul takes place on all aspects I see them going down a la Leeds or Forrest. they should start investing in youth or decent players at least, get a proper manager as keeping Shearer would get them nowhere, and try to create an organised group. shame to see a club like this go down, but it was the only way to get them out of this bad spell they've been on since Sir Bobby left. I wish they'd have Juventus' luck, when they got demoted.

MaestroZidane

Juventus was never on a free fall when they were demoted, they were just sent there. Newcastle is just..... bad. since shearer was put in, only one win in eight games, and that win was an even worse team. It's going to be a very interesting summer, and year for the toon army..

The problem is, who can Newcastle get money for? Jonás Gutiérrez?

15 players on >50k/week? Who?!

Edit: Nevermind - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1187448/Meltdown-Newcastle-8217-s-71m-wage-nightmare--stay.html

Owen (105k), Duff, Martins, Viduka, Geremi, Butt, Nolan, Gutiérrez, Beye, Xisco (seventh-choice striker), Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Barton, Smith, and Given (departed in Jan).

1. Grafite VfL Wolfsburg 25 28 8
2. Edin Dzeko VfL Wolfsburg 32 26 7

Wow. Magnificent record made by two players! They deserve 67.5% of Wolfsburg's total goal and third scorer of Wolfsburg(Misimovic)scored 6 goals. Despite if that will be problem of Wolfsburg next season I'm thinking that some clubs may be interested on them because they didn't do well only these season and they reached their potential. Grafite scored almost 10 goals per every season since he played in top division of European leagues and Dzeko played a few match last season but scored 8 goals. Grafite's record is just amazing because he overcomed his injury prone on midterm of this season(Lasted one and a half month)and having more than one goals per match as average is quite rare in top European leagues. Dzeko is doing well on Bosnia-Herzegovina NT. He scored 7 goals and he is on the top of goal scorers. As so, WC qualification stage in Europe has just 4 matches left and Bosnia is on 2nd place(1st is Spain)on group E. They are leading Turkey(3rd place)by 4 points so they can hope for qualifying on WC 2010 maybe.

Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim are two interesting teams on Bundesliga 08-09. At first, their great results were done by good goal scorers like players above(Wolfsburg)or Ibisevic, Ba(Hoffenheim). Wolfsburg was just on the middle of the table since march and Hoffenheim was on the stage which they can play for CL next season. But after march, Wolfsburg climbed the table and Hoffenheim suddenly declined after Ibisevic's injury. It was followed by Wolfsburg's 10 games winning sequence and Hoffenheim's 11 match unwinning sequence. Wolfsburg's away record was not good enough but they made no lose and only one draw on home match.

By the way I don't think Hoffenheim will follow the way of Reading but I think Hull will....

He also had like 20 assists. It's a shame that we (Bayern) sold him a few years ago, but no one would have guessed that would end up being this good.

Atletico got the 4th place of La Liga by a 3-0 winning against Almeria.

In Ligue 1, Lyon finished season by 3rd. Btw Caen, Nantes, Le Havre relegated and Lens, Montpellier and Boulogne promoted.
