Istanbul's Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium
With a capacity of 53,586, the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium will become the first Turkish arena to host a UEFA Cup final, with the final act of the 2008/09 competition set to unfold in Istanbul on 20 May 2009 (20.45CET).

Unique honour
The home of 17-time Turkish league and four-time Turkish Cup winners Fenerbahçe SK, the stadium lies in the Kadikoy district of Istanbul at a location which has long been associated with football. The arena has been rebuilt stand by stand in recent years to bring the passionate Fenerbahçe fans even closer to the pitch, with UEFA awarding it the 2008/09 UEFA Cup final on 4 October 2006.

Centenary celebrations
This season will mark the 100th year of football on the site of the stadium, with the first games being played at what was once called the Papazın Çayırı back in 1908. Union Club – later renamed İttihatspor – were the first host club at the site, though Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray AŞ and Beşiktaş JK were all to play games at the stadium in its early years.

Famous presidentİttihatspor ceased to exist in 1929 with the lease for the stadium passing directly to Fenerbahçe, who eventually bought the venue outright from the government for 9,000 TL in 1933. The following year saw Şükrü Saracoğlu take over as club president, a position he was to hold until 1950 – between 1942 and 1946 in tandem with his role as Turkey's sixth Prime Minister.

Ongoing development
By 1949, the Fenerbahçe Stadium was the largest football ground in Turkey with a capacity of 25,000, but its development was far from complete, and it continued to be updated and adapted over the following decades prior to another surge of activity which commenced in 1999. These improvements were symbolised by a further change of name to the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, in honour of the former president who died in 1953.

New generation
The rebuilt venue represents a new development for Turkish stadia. The first major stadium not to incorporate a running track, it also houses executive boxes and is ranked as one of only two five-star arenas in Turkey. With the stands just a few metres beyond the touchline, visitors can now feel the full force of home fans' passion from all sides.

A Hamburg fan threw a piece of paper on the pitch, you can see the rest in this video.

Diego's going to miss the final. Stupid yellow card ruling. UEFA should take a real good look at their daft rule book. Its easy to get yellow cards, especially with the amount of incompetent referees that lack common sense. Once they've reached in their pocket, they don't even take a moment to consider how hard the player worked to reach that stage.

If its a red card for violent conduct or other similar offenses fair enough, but yellow cards come too easy these days.
Another top class player denied the right to play in a tournament final.
With this ruling, UEFA are denying the right of neutrals or fans to watch teams put out their best players, thus degrading the level of competitiveness.

We've had Ballack in the WC06 final, Nedved in CL 2002-03, Keane and Scholes in 98-99. Even if his antics were annoying, Alves for Barca, does deserve a place in this year's CL final.
They need to sort this out quickly.

^ new format as well.

Either way, I'd probably rather see Shakhtar win but I don't really have a favorite. Should be a good game!

I remembered that vividly, Joe Hart stamping the balloons in anger... :(

Whenever I hear Werder Bremen, I remember the game against Juve in the CL where they were a minute or so from going to the next stage, only for the keeper to drop the ball and Emerson scoring the winning goal.....

If I have to pick, may it be them that win it..

I remember them being thrashed 10-2 on aggregate by Lyon in the 04/05 knockout stages... And Pizarro doing Milan in the 2nd half to eliminate them this year. Therefore, let's go Shakhtar! Make Elano proud.

Eastern European teams are doing well, at least in this competition. Zenit last year, now Shakhtar. And I'm disappointed to see Diego miss the final, he deserves it. Especially that this is his last season with Bremen (probably).

personally, I want Shakhtar to win just so that the German UEFA coefficient is not as high as it would be if Bremen won, which would mean that that there is a better chance of the German UEFA coefficient not exceeding Italy's, thereby allowing the Italians to keep their 4th Champions League spot ...

nothing against the Germans, it's just that I have soft spot for Italy, and I don't want to see Italian club football lose any more ground on the continental stage ...

I do rate Mesut Özil though, so good luck to him on a personal performance level ...

Mircea Lucescu, Shakhtar couch said he want to win the UEFA Cup and Barcelona to win CL to have a revenge after the match last autumn. :D

I'd want Sakhtar to win it just because their couch is romanian and also have one romanian player: Razvan Rat :D

Would love to see Shakhtar win. We had a wonderful tie against them in the UEFA two seasons ago when our keeper Palop headed in the game-tying goal in the 94th minute.

Ballack was World Cup 2002, and he also missed the Champions League final in 2002 as well. Germany and Leverkusen could very well have been the champs instead of Brazil and Real Madrid.

Yep Shakhtar have some really awesome Brazilians. Should be winning right now, Shakhtar conceided a power free kick from Naldo down the middle. Shakhtar have been much more dangerous at attacking although Bremen had more posessison.

I've thought Srna's been awesome since the Euro2004 when I first saw him play, Croatia were a let down but he surely impressed me.
Then he had a very good WC in 2006, btw him and Pranjic are amazing full-backs Croatia is very lucky to have them...

about the match, well done Shakhtar. They ran all over Bremen in the first half only for their keeper to **** up badly in the goal. Rest of the match was pretty even but they fully deserved the edge.

Diego's absense was a major blow for Bremen's chances in this final, they are just not nearly the same team whitout him on the field.
