View Full Version : Thierry Henry: Most decorated in European Football
ogsimon 28-05-2009, 05:37:PM Apparently Thierry Henry is the most decorated footballer in European football history, he has now won:
- The World Cup
- European Championships
- Confederations Cup
- Champions League
- Premiership,
- La Liga,
- Ligue 1 ( when the French league was at its strongest)
- The Major cups in England, Spain and France and also the domestic league and cup double in all three countries!
Add to this he is France's all-time top goalscorer, Arsenal's all time top scorer, third in the all time Champions League goal scoring charts and third in the all time Premier League goal scoring charts...Is there anyone else in football history with a better all round trophy haul?
To reiterate this isnt a question of number of medals or winning 10 Premier League titles but a question of can anyone match the trophy haul over so many different competitions in multiple major footballing nations
no cup when he was a Juventus player ?
bybuti 28-05-2009, 07:39:PM Titi (H)
We gave him what he wanted (Champions League). :D I'm kidding. He's great player and one of the best strikers of all times. Besides all, very elegant player. :)
Visca Titi.
Arnau 28-05-2009, 07:48:PM no cup when he was a Juventus player ?

Incredible player even on Arsenal.com today they where more or less celebrating him winning the Champions League.
Sevillista 28-05-2009, 08:23:PM Excellent player. Too bad he's an as$hole.

why is that? he always seemed smarter to me than the rest of the bunch.
Arnau 28-05-2009, 11:11:PM everybody hates one player, sevillista choise TRI-ti henry
Siawash 29-05-2009, 05:49:AM He was the only player I respected/liked when he was at Arsenal. But he's a great footballer, very talented.
mnj2x 29-05-2009, 08:21:AM what about zidane? thought he won it all too?
Ilaje 29-05-2009, 08:41:AM what about zidane? thought he won it all too?
Zidane never even played in the EPL.
Arnau 29-05-2009, 10:56:AM and never win la copa del rey.
Luis Ah-Hoy 29-05-2009, 11:57:AM One of the most lethal, imaginative and elegant players i've ever seen.
mnj2x 29-05-2009, 02:13:PM Great achievement but has NEVER WON THE FIFA WORLD PLAYER AWARD.
Guillaume 29-05-2009, 06:47:PM Bravo Titi! (H) Definitely the best French forward ever! He deserved to win a Ballon d'Or a few years ago.. Anyways, great career for this gentleman!
Dytza 29-05-2009, 07:09:PM I also think so. For me Sheva really didn't deserve that Golden Ball. That was Titi's trophy.
Sevillista 29-05-2009, 08:32:PM everybody hates one player, sevillista choise TRI-ti henry
No, I hate looots of players :D
But I find Henry very arrogant on the field and I'll never forgive him for the Spain-France WC2006 knockout match. Puyol and him were both going after a ball, Henry ran into Puyol from the back, then threw his hands to his face even though no facial contact had been made. France scored the go ahead goal on the ensuing play.
Can see it here:

But I have a lot of respect for his abilities.

Puyol did much worse to Henry during the UCL final a few weeks before.
Dytza 29-05-2009, 09:07:PM I remember that one. But I'd not rate a player because only one thing on the field.
Look, after Arnau's comment, I'd like to open a thread on "Which player you hate most?", if it hasn't been made yet.

Do it!
curswine 29-05-2009, 11:20:PM One of the best players of the modern generation and he certainly did deserve a world player of the year too but I fear he is considered 'too old' to win something that prestigious now.
Xifio 30-05-2009, 12:34:AM a good trophy haul is always important for a player, and is usually the mark of a legend ... but history has shown that even lesser players have won a lot of trophies by being part of a great team, while some of the greater players haven't won as much even though they will be remembered for all time for their skill ...
Henry is definitely one of the better players to have played the game ... he is also one of the few elite players to have played in the top 3 leagues in Europe ... he sucked when he played at Juve (no denying it), and like Quaresma (though he might yet return to Inter) was shipped out within 6 months ...
until this season, Henry only ever performed at club level under Wenger (at Monaco, and then at the Arse) ... last season, all he did was sulk at being played wide in a system where he was not the focal point ... it was to his demerit that he adopted such a pathetic attitude -- his excuse of marital problems was, I suppose, valid, though performance irrespective of domestic issues is expected of any professional, in any field of work ...
but I'm glad to see that he embraced his role better this season, and he did his part admirably for the team ...
for France, he was a good player, and the Confederations Cup was probably his biggest contribution, but by no means were the World Cup and EURO won on his back ...
Zidane never even played in the EPL.
who cares? the Prem as a league was crap when Zidane was at the top of his game in the mid to late 90s ... the style of play (the constant counterattacking, and the glorification of physical brutality) is still boring in my opinion, but the marketing and general hype has ensured a well-promoted and accessible "product" (ugh) ...
But I find Henry very arrogant on the field and I'll never forgive him for the Spain-France WC2006 knockout match. pretty much my sentiments ... and I also won't forgive him for his post-match statements following the 2006 Champions League final, when he said that referees should have just told Arsenal not to turn up if they were going to gift Barcelona the win -- f*cking disgraceful hypocrisy because Eboue won a freekick with a monumental dive in that final, and Henry gladly stepped up to take it and provide the assist for Sol Campbell's goal ...
Puyol did much worse to Henry during the UCL final a few weeks before.
what Henry did was cheat ... what Puyol did was try to defend to the best of his ability while Barcelona were chasing the game, playing a 2-5-3 formation ... how the two situations can even be compared is beyond me ...
Guillaume 30-05-2009, 01:41:AM for France, he was a good player, and the Confederations Cup was probably his biggest contribution, but by no means were the World Cup and EURO won on his back ...
He finished French Top scorer in WC 1998 with 3 goals at 21 years-old, OK that was against South Africa and Saudi Arabia, but don't forget that he scored his penalty against Italy in Quarter Final, like Trezeguet, our 2 youngest players in this WC!
Euro 2000 now: 23 years-old, 3 goals again, including the most important in his international career against Portugal at 0-1 in Semi-Final.
Then, we were waiting more about him in WC 2002, Euro 2004 and WC 2006. But after the 2 biggest international titles, it was hard to do better. And each time, he was really tired after big seasons with Arsenal so..
I agree that France didn't win these titles on his back, but we can't hide his importance in these tournaments. Yeah, it's easier when you have Zidane and Djorkaeff (best French player during WC 98 and Euro 2000 in my opinion) behind you, but Henry did a great job for France.
Just one last number: 12. 12 goals with France during WC or Euro games, something like 2 goals during each competition. Not unbelievable, yeah, but very class! Merci Titi!

And there's probably a bunch of guys more...Zidane springs to mind now aswell.
I think Bixente Lizarazu is the most decorated French player ever because he won almost everything with France and Bayern, something like 25 titles! And Marcel Desailly have an amazing record too!
And what about Didier Deschamps? Captain during CL 1993, WC 1998 and Euro 2000! Now I hope he'll win everything as coach for l'OM! (Y)
I'm really happy for Titi Henry as I was happy for Zizou in 2002.. The 2 best French players of the decade deserve it! (H)
ogsimon 30-05-2009, 08:48:PM Beckenbauer's trophy haul is damn impressive and so is Lizarazu's and they have more medals than Theirry probably.
But even with Beckenbauer, he won club trophies in 2 countries and one was in the US, my point is that Theirry won all the major club trophies in 3 different European countries, in addition to the World Cup, Euro Cup and the Champions League.
I struggle to find anyone in Europe that can match that. I don't know if you guys know where im coming from.
yoyo913 30-05-2009, 09:56:PM I consider Franz' individual and European trophies more impresisve.
Ilaje 30-05-2009, 10:02:PM 1. Beckenbauer's managerial trophies should not be counted as well
2. Henry won those trophies in three different leagues,,while Beckenbauer and Lizarazu only did so in Germany.
3.NASL should not be added to any arguement whatsoever.
newbie original 30-05-2009, 10:20:PM Na, Pele never played in Europe 1st of all.
So? He won a bunch of titles with Santos.....if you're talking football history(which is what you were:innocent_smile_1: in the post post that I quoted), then Pele must be mentioned.

Ofcourse and than we should mention people like Maradona and Cruijff too. And when it comes to the better footballer, those people can't be compared to Henry.
But we're talking the most all around honours list here.
Funky--K 02-06-2009, 05:34:AM Vitor Baia's quite a good example, but no national team trophies, though

Arsenal
* FA Premier League: 1997-98
* FA Cup: 1998
* FA Charity Shield: 1998
Real Madrid CF
* UEFA Champions League: 2000
Paris Saint-Germain
* UEFA Intertoto Cup: 2001

* Turkish Premier Super League: 2004-05
* Turkish Cup:
Chelsea
* FA Cup: 2009
France
* UEFA European Football Championship: 2000
* FIFA Confederations Cup: 2001
Quite less impressive, indeed. Also considering the role he played in winning those competitions in comparison with the role Henry played in the competitions he won.
Arnau 22-06-2009, 02:34:PM well he was a key player for mandril scoring twice against bayern.
Xifio 22-06-2009, 04:45:PM as I've said before, Henry was a just another playing member of the squad when France won the World Cup in '98 ... in EURO 2000 he definitely did more, but again the team was not carried on the back of his efforts ... basically, he was not the star of those teams, and he was not indispensable ... Henry's only real starring role for France was at the Confederations Cup in 2003 where he won the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball ...
comparing him to Robert Pirès makes a little more sense ... Pirès won everything that Henry won with the Arse and at international level ... in fact, when Henry skipped the 2001 Confederations Cup, France still went on to win it, and Pirès won both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball (matching what Henry would go on to do in 2003) ...
the difference is that Pirès did not win the French league ... and at Villarreal, he was part of a team that played well but won nothing ... Henry meanwhile looked to be a flop in Spain, before fortune turned and he became a key part of a treble-winning team ...
