View Full Version : WC 2010 SF: Uruguay vs Netherlands [P + R]
gasper000 03-07-2010, 10:45:PM Well.. I must mention that no European nation could win the world cup title when the tournament was hosted by non European country ..
Currently, Uruguay is the only non European nation .. History says Uruguay to win
Logic says Netherlands
I go with logic
Uruguay 0-2 Netherlands
Daniel David 03-07-2010, 11:00:PM First, a bit of history:
M5YLG57a2GE
Logic says Netherlands will march on to the finals. That failing to happen would involve Diego Forlán playing the match of his life, which would certainly be great to watch.
Arnau 03-07-2010, 11:41:PM Hope the orange made it, i don't like Uruguay football.
EDIT: Nice video, what an insane pressure! its like a team of Kuyts and Tevez.
RobbieD_PL 04-07-2010, 12:52:AM Netherlands Spain for a cruel final. Two teams that have never won it go head to head to see who is the perennial underachiever. :(
MaSsiVe 04-07-2010, 12:59:AM Uruguay could pull a shocker here...I'm rooting for them because of Alvaro and Fucile anyway.
ArgVega 04-07-2010, 12:59:AM Netherlands Spain for a cruel final. Two teams that have never won it go head to head to see who is the perennial underachiever. :(
Haha that would be great, battle of the biggest choking teams on the planet(Y) LOL

If I'm not mistaken that was the opener, and the first truly Global demonstration of Total Football. Can't watch the clip now, but Rep had both goals right? Thomas Muller reborn :)
Zlatan 04-07-2010, 10:41:AM Netherlands Spain for a cruel final. Two teams that have never won it go head to head to see who is the perennial underachiever. :(
No way, I want Germany in the final.
Oh and I think this match isn't going to be as easy as everyone thinks, but we still should be able to win it.
Nimreitz 04-07-2010, 09:47:PM No way, I want Germany in the final.

Who is playing RB and DM for the suspended guys?
Zlatan 04-07-2010, 10:12:PM Probably Bouhlarouz for Van Der Wiel and De Zeeuw for De Jong.
MelvinSmiley 05-07-2010, 07:07:AM Uru - Ned 1:0 Forlan in extratime
smf_fede 05-07-2010, 05:00:PM Tied match, probably we can break it on the extra-time.
Don't like the starters 11 on my team, 9 defending players, and only Forlán and Cavani on offensive. Not a desired strategy, mostly forced by the 2 players injured caused by ghana's aggresive play, and 2 suspended (if only referee wasn't invented that foul, Suarez would play, anyway, that theme is over).
On the other hand, this team plays with the heart, so it will make it a tight game cause all players runs, fight and play as a team, that makes the match even, cause despite Holland talent, lacks of that part.
Nice video, but Holland don't play like that on 1974, and Uruguay are much more team compared to that one.
Anyway, with our full team available, would be a sure victory for us, now with 4 men down, it's an even match.
Zlatan 05-07-2010, 05:30:PM Anyway, with our full team available, would be a sure victory for us.
What?
STML1 05-07-2010, 06:15:PM That sounds a bit delusional given the talent the Dutch have over Uruguay even with the back ups...
newbie original 05-07-2010, 08:25:PM The Dutch haven't imposed themselves but could STILL get to the final with only 45 minutes of "difficult" opposition. Teams around them have fallen to pieces. Reminiscent of Germany in 2002......
emmer 05-07-2010, 11:11:PM People, some members are supposed to be ignored.
Galaxyman 06-07-2010, 08:36:AM Hi allll!!!! New here!!!
I think people should be ashamed of themselves all over the world for how they've acted.
Uruguay is IMO the most hated nation in world football........but for all the right reasons. They are guilty of nothing but refusing to die time and time again and become one of the most incredible sports teams in history. They have been mocked and despised since 1924 (when they showed up as an unknown force) for doing nothing but stand up for themselves..... and show arrogant Europeans how the game is played .....beating the odds time and time again.
I've been watching soccer since 1994 (when it came to the US. I barely knew anything about soccer before that), and have to say that no other "fairy tale" run has ever come close to this. Bulgaria, Croatia, Korea , Greece (Euro). Uruguay's history makes this run a once in a life time thing.
People disgust me to be honest. We have a knack for condemning winners. It's human nature I s'pose. Uruguay goes is condemned to always play "Away" (because of their small population) beat games where Mexico, South Africa and Ghana (+FIFA clearly) were the overwhelming home teams........and people still complain and try to crucify them .
For what? For bringing PASSION into a tournament like only they can do.....for showing unyielding heart and will to turn games around when things look bleak?
People should be ashamed of themselves. Go Luis Suarez, hero to millions after the other day, and thanks to him we saw one of the most exciting games in Soccer history.
Nimreitz 06-07-2010, 08:54:AM You must be ******* joking. Croatia finishing 3rd in 1998 in like the 5th year of their National Team existing is a much better accomplishment and Greece winning the ******* Euro in 2004 beats both of those.
Uruguay has accomplished NOTHING in 60 years and they act like they're up there with Brazil, Argentina, Italy, and Germany.
Speaking of those countries, Brazil, Germany, Italy, and Argentina, you know the ACTUAL winners of this sport, have more fans than any other national teams and usually aren't really even hated all that much. People don't hate winners, they hate arrogant pretenders who act like winners.
Galaxyman 06-07-2010, 10:18:AM I'm sorry mate. I didn't mean to upset anyone here.
But I have to get 1 thing off my chest. Besides US newbies , or people who haven't left north america, most of the world despises the other major nations for the same reason you hate Uruguay.
I travelled to Argentina, and they are the most condescending people I have ever ever met in my life towards other football nations, INCLUDING the major ones. Brazil is worse....they won't even let you talk about football and shove their "5 time world champs" down everyone's throats.
Germans, Italians, etc are all the same.
You really need to know this. In fact , out of all the famous world football nations, Uruguay is by far (hands down) the most humble and respectful towards other nations. In fact, that's their reputation among the network of traditional football nations.
The 60 years thing is completely fabricated on your part. In fact, Uruguay has won an incredible amount of major club and national titles in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s with their Copa America. I have met many who have been incredibly nice. they don't care what anyone thinks and know that they are one of the elite nations ever in the soccer world. (I called them the Celtics and Lakers put together of the soccer world)
Zlatan 06-07-2010, 10:34:AM Dude, Uruguay just got lucky with their side of the draw. Had they been at the side of Germany they would've been eliminated in the second round, maybe quarter final at best. And let's also not forget the luck they had during the Ghana match, where Ghana should've scored atleast 3 goals with all the chances they had.
Don't get me wrong, they did well to get this far and I'm not saying they don't deserve it but the teams you mentioned there(Korea 2002, Croatia 1998, Greece 2004) had a far bigger achievement.

Um, I'm sorry mate. I might have not made myself clear.
What I meant about it being bigger , is (in Canadian terms) the equivalent of the Maple Leafs going to the Cup final (or Montreal Canadiens) compared to ...say, Carolina Hurricanes. Just culturally/historically irrelevant football nations.
The fact that a legendary football nation is in the top 4, a nation with tradition with the means to challenge the world powers all the time, is MUCH bigger than Bulgaria/Croatia's once in a lifetime achievement.
It's just.....not even an argument. I'd even use this as a parodic example if we were talking about another sport.
+ a nation of 3 million (!) with that much history beating out France, a great Mexican team, hosts South Africa ....the best Korean team of all time, and the entire continent of Africa .....with their famous comeback attitude .....has been legendary and captured the hearts of people around the world.
***you should hear the Italian broadcast (RAI) of the guy in tears, screaming "Welcome back Uruguay! We've been waiting for you"
I don't think people batted an eyelash for Bulgaria in 94. It's another stratosphere of difference.
Galaxyman 06-07-2010, 11:36:AM Great points though :)
But case in point for me, the sheer ecstasy that Uruguay's run has caused worldwide is incomparable to anything we've seen ever. I'd go off and say this is the most significant underdog run in the history of the world cup, simply because of what it means to football.
When Croatia made it to semis, few outside Croatians actually cared (or felt emotionally involved with it). In South America, it has been unbelievable (where my best friend is from and I have visited). Every single nation's media treated the win vs. Ghana as if their country had done it. In Argentina and Brazil there is nothing but jubilation for their derby rivals (Including today Argentina's president urging everyone to watch the game downtown in their respective cities and support the sky blues). Mexico too.
- In other traditional football nations (Spain, Germany <where my father is from>, Italy)... Countries that are very close to Uruguay (Spa and Ita) culturally and because of football history.
And basically anyone from any nation that has football as its main sport.....or any purest, this is a dream come true.
Just incomparable to anything I've ever seen or read about.
And with all due respect, and no major offense intended (just telling you how it is), but as a Dutchman you can't understand what it means to be a past world champion. I speak t Germans, Uruguayans, Argentineans. It means the universe. You can see it in the faces of reporters and BBC analysts. From indifference to : "Oh WOW. URUGUAY IS BACK". It's immortality for your country. Holland is mostly a footnote in the history of football. There's no way you could understand (this is why my father never really paid attention to the dutch. Until you win a world cup, you will never "Get" what it means to belong to this illustrious group.
mnj2x 06-07-2010, 03:11:PM Dude, Uruguay just got lucky with their side of the draw. Oh like the dutch didnt have any luck on their side? They played slovakia in the round of 16 dont forget. On top of that, the performances have been mediocre and have been getting away with wins. They were hanging on against 10 man brazil just to remind you.
night 06-07-2010, 04:44:PM I want a Germany - Holland final. That's all :)
Zlatan 06-07-2010, 05:08:PM Oh like the dutch didnt have any luck on their side? They played slovakia in the round of 16 dont forget.
Did I say that we didn't have luck with our draw? No I didn't, did I? Read before you write. And on top of that I believe we knocked out the 5-times world champion, while Uruguay knocked out who? South Korea and Ghana? I think that's a little easier.
On top of that, the performances have been mediocre and have been getting away with wins. They were hanging on against 10 man brazil just to remind you.
We didn't hang on against 10 man Brazil, we wasted so many chances after that red card(Kuijt dribble to the heart of the defense, Sneijder shooting unguarded from almost the penalty spot, Huntelaar and Robben free for the Brazilian keeper without anyone marking them). It could've been like 4 or 5-1 if we had been a little bit more careful with the chances we got. The only thing Brazil did in return, was that Kaka shot which was blocked by Ooijer. That was it. We weren't hanging on at all. If anyone was hanging on it was Brazil.
jimorrizon 06-07-2010, 06:19:PM allez Holland....
fender 06-07-2010, 07:22:PM Here we go its now or never! Hup Holland Hup!!!!!
http://i46.tinypic.com/11he449.gif
gasper000 06-07-2010, 07:50:PM what a stunning shot...!
very good goal
Uruguay 0-1 Netherlands
V. Bronckhorst 18'
Nimreitz 06-07-2010, 07:54:PM I'll be excited to see Galaxyman's posts after the game.
BTW, most of Croatia didn't care about their run in 1998? FIFA recognized Croatia in 1992 after a Civil War in which they gained their independence. Many Croatians were scattered across Europe and the World because of the violence. Plus, Croatia was at that time a nation of about 4 million people. If you don't think that team in 1998 meant a million times more to Croatia than this run means to Uruguay, you're completely wrong. That team was the embodiment of Croatian independence. Uruguay is playing for what? Nothing really, no higher meaning.
gasper000 06-07-2010, 08:14:PM I think if Uruguay win today, that would be because Netherlands have Stekelenburg as a GK
very disappointing for dutch if Netherlands lose because of that mistake
good shot by Forlan
Uruguay 1-1 Netherlands
Forlan 41'
Nimreitz 06-07-2010, 08:18:PM It's not all on Steklenburg, the whole team has looked terrible since the goal. The Dutch have a habit of treating 1-0 as 5-0, and it sure looked like that again today.
ArgVega 06-07-2010, 08:22:PM Did I say that we didn't have luck with our draw? No I didn't, did I? Read before you write. And on top of that I believe we knocked out the 5-times world champion, while Uruguay knocked out who? South Korea and Ghana? I think that's a little easier.

Brazil could have been 3-0 up at half.
They outplayed you first half by far, and it took an own goal to wake u up.
Lets not act like you kicked the sh*t out of Brazil, as much as I hate them, they beat themselves...
Man of the Match:
5 Felipe Melo (Holland)
Arnau 06-07-2010, 08:26:PM Jabulani (H)
fender 06-07-2010, 08:27:PM The swerve on the ball fooled Stekelenburg.
Holland still look the better team to me Uruguay hardly threatened the Dutch goal apart from that shot, finger crossed Go Oranje!
Galaxyman 06-07-2010, 08:27:PM I'll be excited to see Galaxyman's posts after the game.

lol Mate learn how to Read. I said no one BESIDES Croatians batted an eyelash. South America just exploded with Forlan's goal. Record viewings in Brazil / Argentina. Even Spain (just recently heard from my best friend)
Point is . Uruguay = Boston Celtics / LA Lakers ...Montreal Canadiens ...NY Yankees of soccer.
Croatia= Carolina Hurricanes.
The meaning of this to the game is unmatched.
I live in Australia, and you had to see Aussies on SBS (mortal enemies of Uruguay) talking about the rare significance of this to football.
It's incomparable. lol. (Like it's a parody of itself that you're even arguing it :p )
Galaxyman 06-07-2010, 08:29:PM lol Diego. Wow. Uruguay without half their team. And the whole world knows this BTW.
Great game!!! Knew both would not let me down.
gasper000 06-07-2010, 08:41:PM It's not all on Steklenburg, the whole team has looked terrible since the goal. The Dutch have a habit of treating 1-0 as 5-0, and it sure looked like that again today.
the ball went exactly where Stekelenburg was standing. He saved a very hard shot by Kaka last match, I really wonder how did he missed Forlan's shot..!
Dah Shinin' 06-07-2010, 08:48:PM Uruguay are great man i hope they win this one..
gasper000 06-07-2010, 09:00:PM GOOOOAAAL
Sneijder 70'
Uruguay 1-2 Netherlands
Nimreitz 06-07-2010, 09:00:PM Hmmmmmmmmmmm
ArgVega 06-07-2010, 09:00:PM I hope van Persie gets a ban, he's a cheating bastard. So offside.
That is just as much cheating as Luis Suarez, I hope the European folk have the ballz to admit that.
gasper000 06-07-2010, 09:02:PM wooohoooo
very beautiful goal
Uruguay 1-3 Netherlands
Robben 73'
fender 06-07-2010, 09:03:PM Hell Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nimreitz 06-07-2010, 09:03:PM THAT ONE IS LEGIT!!!! 3-1 ARJEN ROBBEN!!!!!!!!!! FC Bayern!!
yoyo913 06-07-2010, 09:04:PM You think Sneijder has a chance to win awards for best footballer? He won so much with Inter and is in the final of the WC.
ArgVega 06-07-2010, 09:05:PM THAT ONE IS LEGIT!!!! 3-1 ARJEN ROBBEN!!!!!!!!!! FC Bayern!!
The penalties were legit too in the Uruguay v Ghana game,
I heard alot of b*tching out of you then
Nimreitz 06-07-2010, 09:06:PM The penalties were legit too in the Uruguay v Ghana game,
I heard alot of b*tching out of you then
You sure about that? I was one of the first people to say that Suarez made the right move.
EDIT: And as far as my "that one is legit" comment, I meant as opposed to the questionable goal RvP had just scored.
ArgVega 06-07-2010, 09:09:PM You sure about that? I was one of the first people to say that Suarez made the right move.
EDIT: And as far as my "that one is legit" comment, I meant as opposed to the questionable goal RvP had just scored.
AH my mistake then,
I just remember all the Europe fan's were outraged and claiming that they should have given Ghana the goal, Suarez should be banned for 10 games, etc...
Wonder what they say about that.
Nimreitz 06-07-2010, 09:25:PM And there's a fight after the match. Classic Uruguay.
Respect to them, they played a really nice World Cup, and I say that despite my absolute hatred for them going back many years.
gasper000 06-07-2010, 09:26:PM well done by both teams
Netherlands deserve it
now the question is: Is it Germany or Spain to meet Netherlands in the final ?!
prirechnaya5165 06-07-2010, 09:29:PM Germany please :) What a final would it be!
Coruja 06-07-2010, 09:30:PM Congratulations to Uruguay, i really liked.
Netherlands, Krauts, or Spain???Hmm...I'm going with the land of weed and hookers. Hup Oranje Hup.
Galaxyman 06-07-2010, 09:31:PM And there's a fight after the match. Classic Uruguay.
Respect to them, they played a really nice World Cup, and I say that despite my absolute hatred for them going back many years.
Thanks for admitting that man :)
Good luck to Holland. I hope Spain Holland final to be honest (would be most exciting).
IMO Uruguay's legend for never giving up was solidified. Without 4 key starters, exhausted players ....they never gave up. Great semi final. 2 worthy teams definitely.
fender 06-07-2010, 09:41:PM Over the moon well done Oranje! :bob: :bouncy:
smf_fede 06-07-2010, 10:39:PM Well deserved victory for holland, played on a good shape today, sadly, again the refferees went against us, the 2nd goal was a clear offside from V. Persie, that opened the game to the orange. Yep, the same linesman that called at least 2 offsides against Uruguay that wasn't that. But again, i'm used to, Fifa don't want us.
Anyway, good victory for the orange, congratulations and hope meet Spain on the final so Holland can win his first WC.
Arnau 06-07-2010, 10:46:PM I don't think Holland were better than Uruguay.
Anyway, good victory for the orange, congratulations and hope meet Spain on the final so Holland can win his first WC.
Spain will rape that orange.
Azrael 06-07-2010, 11:31:PM I hope van Persie gets a ban, he's a cheating bastard. So offside.

Don't you cheer for Argentina?
And **** man... RvP didn't even touch the ball. At absolute best, he interfered with the play, but he didn't really block the keeper's view, and he didn't make an effort for the ball, in fact he jumped out of the way.
Arnau 07-07-2010, 12:02:AM It was offside anyway, Van Persie try to touch the ball.
Nimreitz 07-07-2010, 12:26:AM It was offside anyway, Van Persie try to touch the ball.
I'm not sure he did. I think he tried to jump out of the way, but it was so fast he looked awkward doing it.
ArgVega 07-07-2010, 12:45:AM I'm not sure he did. I think he tried to jump out of the way, but it was so fast he looked awkward doing it.
Go watch the replay, he tried to kick it with his right foot. Kept his eye on the ball the whole time, and the keeper studder thinking he was gonna touch it.
I really don't care, I was rooting for Ururguay for South America, but that bad call impacted the game in a way that it set the Netherlands up pretty. I was just "over reacting" like some of the Euro Fans against Luis Suarez.
No.
Sorry you missed a key word, my "literate" friend.
You have to have balls to have an opinion:innocent_smile_1:
Nimreitz 07-07-2010, 12:50:AM I haven't seen many Europeans have a go at Suarez to be honest. Mostly Africans and African sympathizers.
Daniel David 07-07-2010, 12:58:AM There were some embarassing reactions (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup-2010/teams/uruguay/7870106/World-Cup-2010-Luis-Suarezs-handball-evokes-memories-of-Brazils-1970-winners.html) from the British media though...
Azrael 07-07-2010, 01:39:AM Go watch the replay, he tried to kick it with his right foot. Kept his eye on the ball the whole time, and the keeper studder thinking he was gonna touch it.

Sexxist.
STML1 07-07-2010, 01:53:AM I think that while the Dutch won this game, they're not going to win the finals unless they play flawlessly. I felt like they were exposed in this game.
Dalecooper54 07-07-2010, 02:10:AM Go watch the replay, he tried to kick it with his right foot. Kept his eye on the ball the whole time, and the keeper studder thinking he was gonna touch it.
No, the keeper's eyes were transfixed on the ball the entire time, he only missed it because of a deflection of a Uruguyan leg. And Van Persie steps over the ball to not hit it. Also, he's hardly offside anyway:
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/3272/persie.jpg
At best, one foot and maybe a shin are slightly offside. But since he doesn't really interfere, it's a moot point anyway.
newbie original 07-07-2010, 02:38:AM I think that while the Dutch won this game, they're not going to win the finals unless they play flawlessly. I felt like they were exposed in this game.
They don't seem convincing but they're managing to grind out results. I haven't been convinced by them at any point during this World Cup but they're getting the job done.
Nevertheless, they will not be the favorites in the final......
yoyo913 07-07-2010, 03:38:AM We should create a meme where Van Marwijk is the new dos equis man.
http://www.50jaarwdz.nl/upload/images/programma-artiesten/van_marwijk.jpg
http://toddstevenson.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/mostinterestingman.jpg
MelvinSmiley 07-07-2010, 06:04:AM Hmm....not very impressive....germany or spain....the dutch wont win the final.
Zlatan 07-07-2010, 11:21:AM Yeah!!! History in the making. Man am I having a hangover here, but it was well worth. Until deep in the night people we're still celebrating here. It was awesome. Third World Cup final ever, who would've thought. I still can hardly believe it.
I hope van Persie gets a ban, he's a cheating bastard. So offside.
That is just as much cheating as Luis Suarez, I hope the European folk have the ballz to admit that.
Oh yeah 'cause you can totally get a ban for standing a toe off-side while not even touching the ball. C'mon, some people are so ignorant.
Oh and ArgVega, if you support Argentina you are the last person to whine about somebody straying off-side. So far all the teams we beat have either blamed it on the ref or diving or both. Sad and pathetic, but that's okay with me though we'll just keep on winning. Just one more time now.
Arnau 07-07-2010, 05:07:PM Why is Van Persie still starter? he's being very poor. Huntelaar deserve more chances.
Xifio 08-07-2010, 03:40:AM Yeah!!! History in the making. Man am I having a hangover here, but it was well worth. Until deep in the night people we're still celebrating here. It was awesome. Third World Cup final ever, who would've thought. I still can hardly believe it.I can only imagine what it is like out there ... my friends and I came over from Scheveningen to Amsterdam for the Royal Wedding on 02/02/02, and I had never seen a crazy gathering of people like that before ... no disrespect to the royals, but I expect that if there is to be a party on Sunday, it will bigger than that one!
