View Full Version : Should we update the forums?

We are currently trying to figure out if we should update to the the newest version of vBulletin. We are currently running version 3.8.4, while the newest version is 4.1.5. The new version is a major upgrade with a big set of new features.

We want your opinion about this. Do you want us to upgrade to the newest version or do you like it to stay as it is today? Please have your say in this thread and also answer the poll.

Thanks for your feedback,
nor-rbk

There are several reasons for why we want your feedback on this. Me and Matt Holme have discussed some of them and I have quoted from an email between us where we shortly discussed why we want your opinion.

Good question, I'm not sure really. But we have lost many members over
the last few years and maybe an update will keep some members on the
boards and attract new members, I don't have a good answer to this. If
we do choose to update I think it's important that we still have the
SG theme (or a new SG theme) and don't get a generic theme.

I'll create a poll and ask our members if they would like an update or not.

I've grown accustomed to the way things are, really. Where can I check out the new version?

+1 Same here......would like to see how it would be.

I'm not totally sure on how it will look, but this is how it is at the official vBulletin forum. I still want us to keep an SG theme for our forums.

https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forum.php

Bear in mind that it's not the design of the forums that we want to change, we still want it to look the "SG way", but it's more about functionality.

One of the main reason for why I do want an update is that I hope the new forums will have better spam handling than what we have now.

You're definitely right, I guess I wouldn't mind the update, it's not going to change too much anyway, and it'll improve some things for sure.

I´m looking forward to the update, certainly. Speaking as programmer, it will englobe new tecnologies, make the forum more secure thanks to the modules/components... it´s up to us get used with possible layout changes, worth the "risk".

i say yea but not just to updating the forums but to the way they are run in general.
especially in the fifa forums where anyone has the ability to do & say anything they want w/ recklessness & no regard to forum rules.

no mods are around to police the forums & things get way out of hand & im no exception to that i do it as much as anyone else so im not calling out names other than my own.

but something has got to give around here, either more mods being active in a mod manner, something.

truthfully for newbies they should be linked directly to the rules page as soon as they sign in for their first 100 posts to get them to become fully understanding of the way things work around here.

i know it sounds annoying & unfair but i feel its justified, not to mention its saves double posts, unneeded threads & most of all saves site bandwidth we know isnt free.

the only 2 mods i ever see on the forums are keegan & outsider87, no idea where slowhand & santups went.

i think its time we elect new mods that are actually around the forums & will do something to keep them in line.

but it really needs a fix, take a look around all the best are gone due to it & the editing suffers tremendously w/ 3 or 4 good editors
w/ maximal knowledge are here & the rest of the editors are average at best & the ones who put it the most get the least out of it.

to me & im sure to them as well is a little unfair, im sure things will pan out if we can all get on the same page & save this so called editing community before it completely dies out & there is nothing for the future fifa games.

this section of soccergaming needs to get back to the way it was in 08/09 & stay there.

And my opinion is that it would be great to update forum. I am new here, and I like it, but updating is always a good thing.

I would say update it, coz it will bring in lot of new features. You can always keep the SG theme intact.

It even has some Forum Robot Spam Prevention Recommendations (https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php/288234-Forum-Robot-Spam-Prevention-Recommendations) which is badly needed...

@ regularcat: Thanks for the feedback. We will look into this when we create the new FIFA 12 Forum.

@ mk11mayur: We already have that spam control installed. It actually stops about 200 spam posts a day! The problem seems to be that we can't stop spam bots from registering. Since January we've got over 1 000 000(!) new members and I don't think I exaggerate if I say that about 90% of those are spam bots.

i know it bro..... coz i have a forum at FIFA-INDIA (http://fifa-india.tk/forums) and almost 90% members are spam-bots..
i agree w/ regularcat that we should have some more modders who can at least delete posts/threads by these bots...

i would suggest having moderators for different sections.
like person A will look into FIFA 1X forum
person B will look into FIFA 1X pc editing forum
person C will look into FIFA 1X support forum
person D will look into FIFA 1X kits forum
person E will look into FIFA 1X mods forum
and so on.....

what do you think about it??

I have a question regarding spammers.
Are spam users deleted (their account) from this forum or they are only banned for temporary (and their account still exists)? Cause it writes that there are about 128,896 users. If this counts all banned spammers then its wrong picture about users here. And I noticed that there a lot of users which are not active for more then 7-8 years.

The accounts of spammers are not deleted. There are two reasons why, firstly there is no easy way to delete many users at one time as I know of, meaning I will have to delete one and one users wich will take forever. Secondly, I fear that if I do delete these users they will register with the same user names over and over again. Unfortunelately this means that we do have a lot more registered users than what is correct, so the members count is very unaccurate in that way.

Having spambots also prevents people who'd also like to legitimately use a combination of characters for their own username. (rare or not as the case may be.)

and +1 upgrade ftw.

Okay, so I guess there is a way after all since we now are down to 130 000 members. I didn't do this so I actually don't know exactly what happened, but at least the member count is more accurate now.

Anyway, it looks like the majority here do want an update and we appreciate all the feedback we have recieved and we will take this into consideration.
