I think it's too early to make definitive choices, we still have to see who gets those coveted UEFA spots, who wins the scoring title etc. If we picked the winners now that would be English style...

Best Player: Del Piero(just kidding)
Best transfer:Schevchenko
Worst transfer: Marcio Amoroso
Biggest Surprise: Juventus
Biggest Disappointment: All teams out of UEFA before May, and Fiorentina

[Sorry, this is off topic, but in my CM99/00 game (I'm at around 2007/8 I think) Cassano is the best player in Serie A, and one of the best in Europe.
Sorry for the off topic post! ]

I'd like to vote, but I haven't seen enough Serie A games, but if he hadn't of got injured I would have like to given a vote to Vieri as best forward - he wasn't right up there in the goalscoring charts but he's been the main reason I started watching Serie A football again - I hope he's fit for Euro 2000.

juvegoose: you prooved again that YOU are in a class of your own.
at least Mihajtovic scored SOME goals
Inzaghi better than Fiore: yeah sure.
Fiore plays midfield and scored 9 (nine) goals and surely set up at least the same amount while playing defensively well too. Only Zidane and Veron were better in this role this year.
And about Blanc: almost all people who know italian soccer (check gazzetta.it/forum) agree that he was Inter's best player this year. He has great vision, a terrific header and tackles and passes equally well. Only Montero played better as a central back.

And yes, Frey had to face 10 times more shots than Van der Sar or Toldo, consider this.

*get ur facts straight Zambrotta, Mijatovic has scored two goals, Del Piero has scored seven (all from penalty.......but as ive said b4, it doesnt matter how the ball crosses the line)
*Inzaghi has consistently played well this season, both for club and country, and all i can say about Fiore's national team performances is, ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha...(the only reason Italy beat Sweden is because Zoff brought on the REAL international players, and took Fiore off at half time).......dont get me wrong, Fiore is a good player, not good enough to be the best Italian player (that belongs to Nesta, and if Vieri was not always getting injured, Vieri would be the best Italian player)
*in terms of assists, Del Piero more than doubles the next player (Fuser), and Fiore is about fourth or fifth on the list
*also ur point about Van Der Sar and Toldo, it doesnt matter how many shots they have to save, if a team concedes the lowest number of goals, the keeper must be playing well....therefore, even though Van Der Sar doesn't have to make many saves, when he does, he usually makes them perfectly (e.g against Inter, saves from Zanetti, Simic, Seedorf, Recoba)
*also i dont see how u could say Blanc has been Inter's best player......he was caught out by the speed of Del Piero and Inzaghi numerous times, even though Del Piero isnt as quick as he once was (blanc certainly doesnt make the same impression on the game that he did with marseille).....personally, my favourite Inter player (since Ronaldo and Vieri are injured) is Recoba and i think he has been their best player this year

Zambrotta
19-04-2000, 04:21:PM
o.k., dork. link me a site which counts assists. the big italian sites don't. Mihajtovic scored more goals off plays than del Piero. my fact is striaght.
Inzaghi played fantastic for Italy, yeah sure, scored really many goals this year for Italy...
Fiore was their best player vs. Spain in the 1st half, Italy had 2 good opportuinities, and they were Fiore's plays.
There is more to a defender than speed. What do they have the other 2 central backs for. Blanc was their most consistent player, Recoba had 2 great months, but a season 9 months long.
Del Piero and speed - yes, but only the drug.

OK ..... I am going to try to end this topic about the effectiveness about Del Piero. He gets paid 96,000 pounds a week by Juventus. THE HIGHEST PAYED PLAYER IN SERIE A, THE HIGHEST PAID PLAYER IN EUROPE, THE HIGHEST PAID PLAYER IN THE WORLD ..... AND HOW MANY GOALS HAS HE SCORED FOR JUVENTUS THIS YEAR, THAT HAS NOT BEEN FROM THE SPOT??? 0!! Z-E-R-O!!! NOTHING. HE HAS NOT SCORED A GOAL FROM FREE PLAY IN OVER TWO YEARS. TWO FREAKIN WHOLE YEARS, FROM BEFORE HIS KNEE INJURY. AND YOU DEFEND HIM BECAUSE? You do not pay someone 96,000 pounds a week to setup players. You pay him to put the ball in the back of the net, as he is a striker. HE SUCKS!! HE IS THE WORST PLAYER IN ITALY, THE MOST OVERRATED PLAYER IN THE WORLD. RONALDO has scored more gaols this year from free play than he has. DEL PIERO DOES NOT HAVE ONE WORLD CUP GOAL, OR ONE EURO GOAL. NONE. FACE IT, THE "CROWN PRINCE OF CALICO" IS A BLOODY FRAUD. TOTTI, THE INZAGHI BROS, FIORE, VIERI .... ALL OF THEM SHOULD BE ON THE ITALIAN TEAM .... NOT DEL PIERO. HE SHOULD BE SENT BACK TO SERIE C TO LEARN HOW TO BE STRIKER. MY TEN YEAR OLD COUSIN SCORED MORE GOALS IN HIS INDOOR LEAGUE LAST YEAR (2) AND HE IS DEFENDER! BY THAT RATE, HE SHOULD BE MAKING 192,000 POUNDS A WEEK!! RIGHT??

woody, any credibility u had before that post has jsut been shot down in flames........

p.s totti isn't doing much this season either, dont even try to tell me that he's been more valuable than Del Piero, because put simply, he hasn't....Del Piero is a better player, has a bigger impression on a game, and so on.........

p.p.s u mention that he hasn't scored in a world cup or Euro......well, he's never actually played in the European Championships, so its kinda hard for him to have scored a goal in Euro.....he wasnt part of the Italian team in 1996........u idiot, absolute ****ing idiot

p.p.p.s u mentioned those other tournaments, but u forgot to mention the champions league.....could that be because Del Piero has the record for the most number of champions league goals in one season (in 1997/98, when the old champions league system was used [only the champions played, not second or third] Del Piero scored 8 goals, which is a record

Zambrotta
20-04-2000, 08:43:AM
Juvegoose: The one that has no credibility is YOU!
Del Piero WAS part of Italy's EURO 96 team! Why the **** do you talk when every second thing you say is plainly false.

And about Del Piero being better than Totti - you sure must feel good being the only person in the world to think so, even if it makes you look even more foolish.
Totti had lots of brilliant games, he is among the highest graded players in the Gazzetta, which usually favours teams and players from the North.

The only reason Del Piero plays for Italy is Zoff, who is the same as you, a Juve-Goose

Woody_007
20-04-2000, 04:55:PM
So what if he scored 8 goals, Rivaldo has 9, and he is not even a striker. How many has Del Piero scored this year?? For 96,000 pounds a week, you think he could score at least one. (that hasnt been gifted to him by a referee) And Juvegoose ..... I guess the truth does hurt. All I have posted up there is the truth. There are no lies ... no misinterpretations on my part, no bias. So please, defend his monster contract objectively and not emotionaly.

What the hell does that mean. He never was the highest goal scorer in the Serie A! 2 years ago he lead the CL, but Bierhoff and Ronaldo (among others) scored more in the Serie A. And you certainly can't mean this or last year...

21-04-2000, 12:35:PM
shez mate, no offence, but even though i am the greatest Del Piero fan on this forum, it is true he didnt score any world cup goals.....Vieri scored against Norway, but it was the build up play by DP that made the goal........see Zambrotta, i have the balls to admit that my fave player is not the best, unlike you

btw, Zambrotta, Ronaldo was only 2 goals ahead of Del Piero in the 97/98 serie a season, and DP easily had the most goals in all competitions as he scored heaps in champions league.

Zambrotta
21-04-2000, 02:04:PM
Juvegoose, stop it. Del Piero had nothing, NOTHING to do with Vieri's goal, it was a long pass by di Biagio. You and Shez make a pretty good duo, in terms of stupidness, of course.
Check this replay if you still don't believe:

And I just said that Del Piero was not the leading scorer in the Serie A, that was what you claimed.

Zambrotta: Del Piero made that goal because three Norwegians had to cover him, that is why Vieri was so open!(Im kidding...)

Anyway I think we should stop arguing this point. I don't think he is great this year.

I went for a neutral opinion(Pilka Nozna rankings) and Del Piero does not make the top ten at his position for 1999, and he is not even on the honorable mention list. That means they are ranking about 25 players better than him at that position. So no, he is no longer great. He was number six at wing-forward in 98.

By the way, Inzaghi ranked 5th and Darko Kovacevic got an honorable mention, so if you go by that they are both better than Del Piero.

juvegoose
22-04-2000, 01:53:AM
hey zambrotta, does it ever occur to you that the reason Del Piero didn't score a goal was because of how tightly he was being marked.....i guess you have forgotten the Austria game, where the Austrian defence was chopping him down whenever he got the ball...there was always 2 or 3 players on him, and this also is the reason Vieri scored so many........a great player he is, but his job is made much easier when the other team is concentrating on defending against one player, and leaving heaps of space for another....
just my opinion...

btw, u are right about the build up play to the Norway goal, although you must be pretty desperate to prove me wrong, if you went to that great length to find the video of the goal.........it seems you are more interested in pissing me off than in talking soccer, but you know what, its not working....cause whenever i see one of your ****ed up posts about Juve and Del Piero, i just look at my serie A ladder and think, "ive got nothing to worry about really", Zambrotta you can say what you want, but the table speaks for itself

http://www.raisport.rai.it/mcalcio/1999_2000/a/classifica.html

juvegoose
22-04-2000, 01:59:AM
and where did i claim that Del Piero was the leading scorer in Serie A.......i said he was leading scorer in the champions league, NOT in Serie A

as for u woody, u proved you know nothing, because when Del Piero scored 8 in the champions league, they didnt play anywhere near the amount of matches they play today.......only the best teams played in the champions league back then, which makes the achievement even greater.......

p.s ive got a tip for you guys.......try and get a hold of the Juventus v Monaco semi-final (both legs), watch them, and tell me Del Piero doesn't have class......i dont care if it was two years ago, it still proves he has something you guys are saying he doesnt

Im not taking sides here but that is preety sad by paying out Zambrotta about tellign you that Del Piero did not set up the goal...he gave the video as evidence for you to look.....
just admit when youre wrogn and dont try and make up lame excuses

And About Del Piero being tigtly marked....ummmm......not sure if you havent notices before but most players that the opposition sees as a threat is gonna be tightly marked....difference is that a great player will still score
Being tightly marked is another excuse for him not scoring....

And just to add again im not taking sides here but am just saying what i thought from reading your argument

JuveGoose .... that was two years ago .... what has done lately???

Still waiting!!!

Growing OLD!!!

Del Piero sucks. For a 96,000 pound a week striker, the least he could do is score once or twice. Maybe even have the common decency to get a hat-trick from time-to-time. But does he?? No. Can he?? Obviously not .... he has a midfield of ZeZu and Davids, and he cannot even put the ball in the back of the net.

So what if he did that two years ago ... that was then ... this is now. And right now ... he sucks. He should be transfered for a Ronaldo jersey and some fries to some 4th division club in the Antarctic. He should take note of the French ametuer club Callias, now those guys are worth money .... what they have accomplished, whether they win the French Cup or not is monumental and they have my deepest and most passionate respect. That is what football is about, playing to the best of you abilities. Del Piero?? He is just another overpaid, overdone and overhyped player who signed a contract more deserving of his ego, not his talent.

Woody_007
22-04-2000, 08:22:PM
Ohhhh .... and by the way ...... WHO CARES IF HE HAS 2-3 PLAYERS ON HIM. I have seen Ronaldo, Vieri, Owen, Kanu, Bergkamp .... truly great strikers, fake defenders out of their overpriced shoes and slot the ball in the back of the net. So do not tell me that the attention he ONCE recieved has anything to do with his lack scoring ability. All it shows is that he cannot handle his role. It is no excuse .... great players create space and exploit weaknesses .... does he??

Leave Del piero alone, hes had a bad season cause he came from an injury that almost costed his carreer.Yes ,that was over a year ago,but its not easy for del piero mentally .Hes probably scared to reinjuring it so he is playing with precaution .I say lets forget about this season ,the truth will be revealed next season for del piero whether he is good or not.

Woody: I have seen Ronaldo, Vieri, Owen, Kanu, Bergkamp .... truly great strikers

Juvegoose: But two of those players played in Serie A and failed, and one isnt even good enough to attract attention from Serie A clubs. You seem to forget that it is much harder to score in Serie A than in any other league in the world.......had u said Crespo, or Batistuta (who i can admit is a better player overall than DP), ur argument would make some sense, but you had to say Bergkamp and Kanu, who did **** when they were with Inter...

Case closed, eh?

p.s u should talk to juninho.........he thinks that Jardel is gonna score 50 goals a season or whatever in Italy just because he does in portugal....you guys have a similar problem.......u dont realise that Serie A is the toughest league in terms of scoring

Paolo_Rossi
23-04-2000, 07:26:PM
Bergkamp still sucks,he had a chance with Inter and he couldnt do **** all ,as for Kanu,I cant say anything about him, cause he never played much with Inter .Another guy who sucks is Thierry Henry ,he scored only 2 goals with juve last year .A good player in my mind is someone who scores regularly ,whether its serie A or any other league .

PolishPower
24-04-2000, 03:44:AM
Paolo Rossi thank you voice of reason! I hate it when people say some great player like Roberto Carlos or Bergkamp couldn't cut it in Seria A, therefore he really sucks. What about the fact that many players never get a chance to show what they can do? Take a player like Recoba at Inter 2 years ago or Henry last year at Juve, the guy hardly got a chance to play! And Im not saying this is just Seria A, this is true in all the leagues. Also remember other factors like coaching and even teammates(not getting passes from teammates because they don't like you) play a part in how good you play.

Woody_007
24-04-2000, 06:05:AM
Juve .... I know Serie A is the toughest league for scoring ..... and Jardel could never score 50 goals in one year .... so please do not assume that because Juninho and I share one topic, we agree on the rest ... that is stupidity ... not an educated presumption.

Second .... the fact that Serie A is the toughest defensive league has nothing to do with the fact that Del Piero has NOT scored from free play in TWO WHOLE FREAKIN YEARS! OK .... that is irrelevant .... PERIOD! AND THE FACT THAT Bergkamp and Kanu did not do a lot in Serie A, does not mean that they suck. They are killing it in England ... and the last time I checked .... Bergkamp scored the goal of WC 98 .... WHAT DID DEL PIERO DO??? ooooohhhh ..... uhhhhh ..... wait .... ummmmmm ...... "HE SET UP VIERI'S GOAL!!! .... YEAH!! THAT IS WHAT HE DID!!" HE WAS A PIECE OF CRAP!! HE BOMBED IN WC 98 ..... HE SUCKED! HE SCORED 0 (ZERO) GOALS!! HE HAS NOT SCORED IN SERIE A .... NOT IN ANY WORLD CUP GAME .... NOT EURO A CHAMPIONSHIP GOAL!! THE FACT THAT SERIE A IS THE TOUGHEST DEFENDING LEAGUE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS INABILITY TO SCORE. THAT SOUNDS LIKE THE CRAPPIEST EXCUSE IN THE WORLD. GEEEEZ .... COULDN'T THINK UP ANYTHING BETTER??? TRY AGAIN.

Paolo_Rossi
24-04-2000, 03:45:PM
Henry did get a chance with Juve ,especially that Del Piero was out that year .As for Bergkamp ,he sucked with Inter ,he never created any chances ,he was awful and i dont think anyone in that had anything against him except the fact that he just sucked ,i have a tape of some Inter matches back in the early and mid 90's and boy was he awful in every game.

Zambrotta
25-04-2000, 05:29:PM
Bergkamp won Inter a UEFA Cup in 94, just to remember some of you...
Kanu got REALLY many chances to prove his worth, coming to Inter with a serious heart problem...
Henry was bought in Jan 99 and sold in July 99, much time as well. He only scored 3 (or 4?) goals in WC98...

Paolo_Rossi
26-04-2000, 05:01:PM
Bergkamp didnt do nothing with Inter,They won the Uefa cause they had good midfield and defense.Still Bergkamp didnt prove that he was good
