A lot depends upon what you want to install. Most downloaded files simply overwrite an existing one so it is simply a question of finding the same file in FIFA99 then copying the new file to this location, overwriting the existing one. The only disadvantage with this is, what if you don't like the change? You then have to un-install FIFA99 and re-install it to get back to the original settings.

The best way I have found is to install SweetPatch MRA. This is a program that manages patches for you, without overwriting the existing ones. Go to www.fifa-mra.com (http://www.fifa-mra.com) and download the program. This installs itself and creates a folder in FIFA99 to put the patches into (it also works for FIFA2000 and 2001). Most of the patches will have an included directory tree which copies the appearance of the FIFA99 tree. This means you simply create a sub-folder within the FIFA99/MRA patches folder, then unzip the patch to that folder. You start SweetPatch, install the patch by selecting it from the list, then launch FIFA99 from within SweetPatch. You will need the CD in the drive for some of the files. To prevent the autostart from launching FIFA from the CD hold down the left SHIFT key when the drive starts to spin. When the drive stops spinning, launch from SweetPatch. The game then runs with the patch installed, and will do so whenever you go from SweetPatch. If you go from the CD, you get the unchanged game. Of course, you can install other patches and swap backwards and forwards (I've got the English Super Patch, Duncker's FIFA99%, Euro2000, EuroLatino, and Ultimate English Update that I swap between).

The system lets you try a patch and if you don't like it, you simply delete its folder from the MRA folder in FIFA99.

The SweetPatch website has a good tutorial for general use. I've sent one to Nick covering the use of the ESP specifically, as this patch also modifies a chunk of the front end graphics and audio, replacing Gary Lineker with Des Lynam and changing the menu graphics.

Ther is a patches and kits tutorial on the FIFA99 website, but I can't remember exactly where.

I assume that, as you can download, but cannot seem to install, the problem is one of zip files.
Most downloads come over as zip files for speed of transfer. This means that all the files in a program or patch have been compressed into one large file using a program called winzip. You can then unzip the zip file back into its component parts with the winzip program.

You can get winzip from most PC magazine coverdisks, just check the CD listing under utilities. Alternatively it can be downloaded from www.winzip.com (http://www.winzip.com) as a self-installing file.

Once winzip is installed, double-clicking any zip file in Explorer opens this file in winzip, allowing you to unzip the file to the required location. in the case of SweetPatch, it may actually install directly out of Winzip without having to unzip the file first.

I hope this is of use, but if this is not the problem, please be a bit more specific on your next post.

OK, here we go.

If a patch is truly MRA compliant, it will be supplied as a self-executing file that extracts the patch into the MRA directory in FIFA99. Most FIFA99 patches were produced prior to SweetPatch being developed so very few are compliant.

When you download SweetPatch, you get a self executing file (.exe). Simply find this file in Explorer or My Computer and double-click it. Follow the instructions and this will install SweetPatch and attach it to your copy of FIFA99.

When this done, find FIFA99 in Explorer and you will see that a sub-folder has been created by the MRA. It is here that the patches are installed.

When installing a new patch, lets say the World Cup Winners patch, create a new folder in this MRA sub-folder, call it a suitable name (i.e. World Cup Winners) then unzip the patch into this new folder. Ensure that you have preserve directory structure (I think it says this!) selected in Winzip when doing this. This will create the various folders, sub-folders and files of the patch in this new directory. Close Explorer, open SweetPatch, highlight the patch and click install patch. Once this is done, start FIFA99 from within SweetPatch and you are away.

When using kits, you need to do a little detective work to find which kit file is to be replaced. Most of the single kit files have a .txt file (readme.txt) that explain where to find the file that is to be replaced. Alternatively, a little trial and error may be called for. Make a copy of the suspected kit file on a floppy. Overwrite the original file with the new one and run the game. Then play "hunt the kit". If the wrong one changed, make a note of which changed and what file name refers. Overwrite the new one with the original and repeat with another original until you find the one you want. It is worth spending a little bit of time studying the directory tree of FIFA99 to get a feel as to where you might find things.

I found the reference I mentioned previously, you'll find a tutorial on how to install various downloads here - http://www.fifa99.net/downloads_tutorial.html Hope it works for you.
