I've already ordered my copy of PES - but I'm dreading 1 thing.
Every ISS game so far has lacked in the direct free kick department. I don't want to be able to score every time but so far it's been almost impossible.

Taking Free-Kicks is very difficult. It requires alot of practising on the Training Mode. Once you've got an idea of how well a particular player is at Free-Kicks ( Curving etc. ) you can bear this in mind when you take it out into normal games. I score probably once every ten attempts , whether this is a reflection on normal success rates is the question. Because the game is so realistic you have to practise frequently to try and higher your chances.
The rule i always use is around 3/4 Power and then apply after-touch while the Power increases. Someone else may have better ideas.
Hope this helps.

Nope no better Idea's. As you said practice makes perfect. I don't mean to sound exactly like my friend above but he is absolutely correct. You have to know who takes free kicks on your side. You have to get use to their shot power. For example, I play with Holland and Seedorf has an excellent shot so does davids. However I find it easier scoring off free kicks with Seedorf. I have about a 40% success rate with him, why? well frankly he was the first person I started to practice kicks with and i guess i'm just good with him. When i do the same thing with other players, it hits the ball, or goes to row Z.
So basically practice makes perfect, cliche maybe but it is true. You will appreciate it when you are playing International cup and the game is tied, you are playing with england and beckhams steps up to take it. Just becos it's becks doesn't mean you will score....

JonnyDp, I used to feel exactly the same as you about freekicks but this weekend I changed my mind. I used to be crap at them, always hitting the wall, or go sailing over the bar. However I was playing in the International Cup as Brazil and I was awarded 4 free kicks. Here is what happened.
no.1 Rivaldo took it and hit the bar.
No.2 Rivaldo took again from the right and it went straight in the top corner.
No.3 Rivaldo once again and it was an almost carbon copy.
No.4 Carlos long range effort flew in.
I was absolutly shocked. I have played this game for months and never scored one. I had noticed my shooting getting better and better so I guess the other guys are right in that it just takes practice.
This doesn't really help you but it is possible. Even I can do it!! :)

hey hey hey,
with regards to ur topic, there are no problems with freekicks in the game at all. :)
u can control the spin, backspin or curve it left/ right and
it is more realistics than those f**king arrows in "some" games...
oh man,
IT IS POSSIBLE to score Long range freekicks!
i can even score my freekicks from just below the centre circle, and i am not lying! :)
i saved my replay!
u need technique!
i was a total nerd until my frd taught me!
it was so crap that he can score 7 out of 10 freekicks...
I was hopeless until someone here gave me a few hints. I kept practising and have a success rate of about 1 in 7

It DOES take practice, but once you get used to them it shouldn't be too hard.
Best players for free kick I find are:
Batistuta
Hagi
Rivaldo
Beckham
Zola
Ortega
Nakata
Also it's important which foot the player takes it with. Hagi is left footed so it's best when it is a right hand side free kick and the other way round for right footers.
