View Full Version : to all those who say "ISS is the best" . . .
When you say "ISS is still the best Soccer game available", you speak for yourself. NOT EVERYONE.
NOT EVERYONE will agree with you.
Sure ISS is an excellent game, but I think you have to be willing to accept the fact that it is NOT the best game for EVERYONE.
Hey, i like Pele's Soccer for Atari 2600 - it didn't even have stick players, just squares :)
You also have to be willing to accept the fact that some people prefer graphics over gameplay (just like YOU prefer gameplay over graphics) - and they have every right to do so. Hey if they like 360 spins and scripted gameplay, then let it be.
You play your game, and let the others play their's - it's that simple :)
cymonguk 01-11-2001, 01:05:AM But you have to say FIFA fans are rather tetchy when it comes to FIFA, any comment that suggests it isnt perfect, even without reference to ISS (I have stopped this as have Ze Penguin, etc), you get flamed.
Perth Glory 01-11-2001, 02:50:AM You'll find most of ISS's fans have no problem with accepting people may prefer fifa - its understanding it thats the problem.
If people hadnt been so persistent about ISS's gameplay I wouldnt have bothered getting it. Like most I was under the impression that FIFA is the only alternative for PC football fans, but its just EA's marketing drown out most other titles - unfortunately I dont have UEFA Challenge anymore but Id like to see it again after playing fifa 2002.
Anyway until comparing FIFA to emulated ISSPE2 people really cant say that FIFA is the best football game available for PC :)
bulldrig 01-11-2001, 05:27:AM why do u keep calling it ISS???
THose letters wont be included in KCET games anymore

What you are saying is mostly true but i think you are stretching it a bit. Com'on now, tell the truth, you prefer to see a square making a run and a long ball played to the square or you would like to see Overmars making the run and he 'in stride' lifts his leg up to collect the ball beautifully.
I don't even want to go into relative scales for liking games and all that with you cos that will just open a can of nasty worms.
All I will say is this, if you want a game that realistically represents the game as we play it outside, with ball physics of this world, player movement that doesn't defy physics and gameplay that keeps you screaming at the TV as if your country was playing a world cup final, you know the game. If you want a game with a lot of teams, most WCQ, ball physics from the 6th dimension, AI that beats you by scoring 3 goals in the last 5 mins of play, arcadish gameplay...you know the game.

theCRO 01-11-2001, 11:14:AM What was the point of starting this thread?
We know which game is better, and we know that 10 year old hockey fans love FIFA. :)
I don't get it.
The only thing Fifa is really good for is it's licence, other than that, I don't think there's much else to offer over the ISS/PES range.
bertkamp16 01-11-2001, 04:56:PM I think I can settle this argument. Before this year, I had been playing FIFA since the '97 edition. As dreadful as FIFA 2001 was, I still bought it. Blind faith, what can I say. But I always had this nagging feeling that there had to be something better out there. Through these forums, I heard about ISS Pro and very luckily, got it on sale at a local game shop. My brother and I were awestruck that we could be having so much fun playing a psone game (ISS) as opposed to a computer game (FIFA). Everything about the gameplay was better. I mean EVERYTHING. I played central midfield for three years on my high school's varsity team, I knew that this was what soccer was REALLY like. No triple three sixties to cross to bycicle kick. TEAM PLAY was what ISS is all about. I ended up GIVING AWAY my FIFA 2001 to a friend. I haven't missed it since. My attention shifted from ISS back to FIFA when I started reading about all the "innovations" that EA was implementing for 2002. The new passing system, blah, blah, blah. I went out and prepaid for it (what can I say, after all these years, its like I've been programmed) I was still defending FIFA in forums like this one, writing about how much EA had changed and how great it was going to be. I ended up getting into a VERY heated debate with someone who ultimately ended up opening my eyes and who I'm now proud to call a friend. I waited eagerly for the demo to arrive and when it did, I played it quite a bit. I was satisfied with it compared to 2001, but compared to ISS it still didn't stand a chance. Now, you must be asking yourself, "what is the point of this idiot's lengthy babble fest?" The morale of this story is not to sell yourself short. THERE IS a better game out there. And when you play this game, I GUARANTEE you'll be converted, as was I. Personally, I'm waiting for my next check so I can get my PS2 modded (I can thank my previously mentioned bud for helping me with this too!) so I can get PES when it finally arrives. I'll eat my damn shorts if its not the best soccer simulation of all time. PERIOD.
cool
we punished you in the fifa2002 forum man, that day, not long ago:)
but I'm glad now you're convinced:)

IMHO a forum is a place where people do just THAT; speaking for themselfs!
We don't say others HAVE TO agree with us...
We just give our opinion and it is up to others to agree or not.
So as long as the subject is not off topic, there is nothing wrong...
I think the post at the start is not relevant.....

Obvoiusly konami is changing its name to PES, but the name ISS will never leave the mouths of the true ISS fans.
I see it as a mark of respect, because we first started with just the name ISS on the super nintendo, and a that time it was the best fotball game around.
grashed 02-11-2001, 08:18:AM I hate all of this preference **** and different oppinions.
All the people out there that canot gain access to ISS, I forgive you for playing fifa. Honestly the people that prefer other games than ISSPE/WE really stunns me, these people say that they love football, but they still their prefer a game which is a complete bastardization of the game itself than one which is as closest to real life footy you can get. I mean really don't you fifa fans appreciate how beautiful football is.
tell me, what makes a football game in real life?
preperation, tactics, training, player management.
you get all of this and more in ISS.
To play ISS you have to LOVE(not LIKE) and know allot about football, the more you love football the more you will love ISS without a doubt. If I know little about football you will not be able to play or understand ISS, better to get a quick fix and play fifa.
Us Iss fans are prepared to go to any lenghts when it comes to football, we like to know what makes football matches.
AnaMorph0s|s 02-11-2001, 09:46:AM Yeah, it is all about a matter of taste and opinion, and we should of course respect eachothers choices, but anyhow (and I'm not saying this ISS patriotically) comparing Fifa with ISS, is like comparing brussels sprouts with fine swizz chocolate. ;)

LOL...Good metaphor! Brussel sprouts?? Damn, that's HARSH!
Neutral LFC 04-11-2001, 05:27:AM While I can understand SCTW's feeling that ISS Pro being better than Fifa is just opinion, to me, just seeing how people are delighted when they finally play ISS Pro Evo 1 or 2 (like Arjun just recently), I still find it hard to believe that ISS being better than Fifa is just the opinion of a few individuals. I think the vast majority of people who have actually spent a few hours with ISS Pro Evo prefer it to Fifa.
To me it's like someone saying, Wolfenstein 3D is better than Quake 3. Now of course it's that person's OPINION that Wolfenstein 3D is better than Quake 3, but if you sit 10 Wolfenstein players down in front of Quake 3, at least 9 of the 10 will see that Quake is better....but like the_man would say in this case; if you want to play a simple shooter with 2D sprites for enemies, no jumping, no multi-tiered levels, no looking up or down and crap enemy AI, then that's fine. :)
MEIN LEBEN!!!!!

bertkamp16 04-11-2001, 05:27:PM No offense Gabriel, but this is a really bad place to spread the FIFA 2002 gospel. It's kinda like Bruce Willis in Harlem at the start of Die Hard with a Vengence!:D
GABRIEL 04-11-2001, 09:18:PM spread the FIFA 2002 gospel? LOL
I wonder if that was the intention of starting this thread at all. :p
and if this is the ISS forum, wouldn't this thread be in the wrong place?
oh well, how many feels that some ppl in Fifa2002 forum are very hostile to ISS fans?...
Edward_ Black 04-11-2001, 09:22:PM No Contest ..Fifa 2002 v Pes.
Sorry for any lack of originality on my part, but i just couldn't resist adding these few lines from two of the reviews that are on the net .. Ned
The Nutmeg:>
The ball physics are improved as well. The ball is a bit more "alive" than before. It's possible to get lucky dribbles and bounces and sometimes even put the ball through defenders' legs...
Compete for the ball:>
In the new rev the fighting and shirt-pulling while steaming ahead toward the goal is very realistic.
Ball Distribution:>
Five different long-pass options are offered, which give varying degrees of player control. The basic setting gives automatic aiming and crossing while the fifth setting gives full control, passes have to be aimed manually and crosses are achieved by pressing both the long pass button and L1. Lob shots also can be either produced by double tapping shoot or pressing shoot in conjunction with L1. Attackers are also more effective in getting through passes than before. Now it's possible to fake out defenders, dribble your way into the box and give a pass to an open attacker to try it for yourself.
Novice to Academic:>
Instead of three difficulty levels, PES offers five different levels and plenty of tournaments to choose from to boot. Up to eight players can take part in the proceedings and slowdown hasn't occurred in the extensive testing done here at IGN's European offices.
Coup de Gras:>
Pro Soccer Evolution will break FIFA 2002 and This is Football 2002 on Playstation 2 into pieces. Inertia of the players has been lightened in consequence of what dribbling with the ball has become easier. More than inertia, development of a consistent action is due to a perfect mastership in the control of the ball reception from a pass. So, according to the fact that the pass is strong, long, short, in the back or in the player's stride, controlling the ball would always be different. The colossal work brought to the animations is obvious : turning an opponent quickly, shooting with the inside of the foot and dodging : all of these movements bring a new sensation of realism (invisible in Winning Eleven 5 as it was so slow) to Pro Soccer Evolution. From these modifications are flowing a new way of perceiving the game. As we understand how to operate on controlling the ball, we can string many passes together and it becomes delightful for the eyes. Another modification which can seem minor but which is important, is that it has become easier to combine a feint and a semi-acceleration, which was uneasy in Winning Eleven 5, too slow. Of course it is not possible with everyone, but seeing Zidane with the ball turning his opponents quickly thanks to this combination is a perfect moment.
theCRO 04-11-2001, 10:41:PM Yeah they're hostile, wouldn't you be if you had to play FIFA all your life? Man, no wonder they're as cranky as 37 year old virgins :p

well sprouts are really less fat than chocolate...so everything has good and bad points :p
You eat sprouts because you feel you ought to - you eat fine swiss chocolate because you love it and you always need more!

Even non-EA players?
Which non-EA associated players have said, explicitly, that they like Fifa 2002 over ISS Pro (in any incarnation)? Just asking.
Then again, if I'm Gary Neville I would like Fifa 2002 as well because it would allow me to see my 'virtual-self' dribble like Maradona with the ball mysteriously gravitating back to my feet when I push it forward, I'd also be able to shoot and head the ball at 150 mph, not to mention a wonderful blue/white/red/orange halo/motion blur comming out of my arse everytime I make a run - I think it'd be kinda cool to see myself as a superhero.
I also might prefer it to ISS PE1 since every Fifa copy sold gives more money to FiFPro while every copy of ISS PE 1 sold, with no license, doesn't.
