View Full Version : Band of Brothers
Band of Brothers was a great series. Wow. If you don't know it was the story a ten part series (and next we an extra documentary episode) of Easy Company. Starting in England days before Normandy, through France and Operation Overload. Operation Market Garden in Eindhoven and Holland. The Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne - Belgium. The Rhine, and finally taking Hitler's Eagle Nest. It was a true story.
Then at the end they ended with all the real people portrayed and it brought a tear to my. I love my grandparents, I love everyone who was in the Greatest Generation for our cause. I'm proud - UK, Canada, USA, Australia.
"My grandson asked me the other day, if I was a hero in the war. I told him, 'No, I wasn't a hero" *pause* But I served in a group of heroes"
"King James V said to his men, "Those today, who fight with me, are part of our Band of Brothers. Those who shed their blood with my are my true brothers."
[= SAM =] 05-11-2001, 04:54:PM Yes it is a great series Joe but it is still on in New Zealand about part 7 is on this week I think but many people watch it and praise it. :) :) ;)
I missed Week 7 cause I was playing FIFA 2002. Apparently it's a big turning point - a lot of blood and guys dying. Eh, that's all I will say.
Ubik Valis 06-11-2001, 05:57:AM Yeah, they're showing that series o ndanish television to, isaw the first two episodes but i haven't seen it since, cause i'v haven't had the time......but it's a great series....
It a really great series, but when i was on holiday in the US during the summer i watched a programme on the making of the series. From that programme it looked like the series was going to be amazing, but i have been let down a little.
In the UK it has just shown the 6th episode, and for 20 mins the doc is walking around looking for morphine, and there is no really action in the episode apart from the horrific images.
Its a great series, but it could have a lot more action in it.
No, I think that's what makes it unique. There was still more to the war, at times, then battlefield action. Well, the seventh episode is the most. Like the tenth there are maybe two bullets fired. I like that. It's based on a true story, so it's depicting war as it is. I don't know about the German sex scene though, "Oh Ja! Ja!" "Sergeant?" "Yes sir!" *stands up naked* "Where's my stuff?" "Right here sir" "Thanks" *walks out* Haha, it's not giving away the story, it was a small part. :D
Stevie B 06-11-2001, 10:06:PM Yeah, I agree with you, Joe. Most wars are not like playing Doom or Quake. There are long periods of quiet, particularly when there is a bit of a stalemate situation as was at Bastogne. What happens is that recce teams are sent out to probe the forward positions in a bid to evaluate strengths and weaknesses. Once this is done, an assault is made, all hell breaks loose, ground is won or lost and it all goes quiet again.
It's interesting that they have got British actors to play Americans, although Dexter Fletcher has had prior experience at this, playing Spike in "Press Gang", plus his wife's American. The guy who developed panic blindness in episode 3 is also British, last seen as Duggie in "The Vice".
Can't stop the rush... 06-11-2001, 10:19:PM Excellent Series!:)
Though i've only seen up to episode 5.
Finally saw episode number seven tonight, had some spare time and watched it on the VCR.
Anyway, I was surprised that a game that was formerly made by Microsoft, Close Combat - specifically Close Combat IV: Battle of the Bulge - had a photorealistic map of the town of Foy that they end up taking in the end. It's cool. :D
I also found a website that I thought was cool from www.hbo.com/band website, it was www.screamingeagles.com (101st Airborne Website), it has a list of veterans from all over who have emails that you can contact. I thought that was cool. Don't think the guys on the show have emails listed though, only a few Easy Company guys registered (like maitenance and artillery men).
What do you guys think of it now? Comments?
[= SAM =] 17-11-2001, 05:36:PM I watched Episode 7 last week it was very good. Did you see Steel he was a legend running through all the germans at Foy. Can't wait until Episode 8 this wednesday. :) :)
It's all "downhill" as action goes, but it still is awesome.
I think I might go to college for four years and join the military - Marines or Army - as an officer and get college paid for me. Tradition you know? Both grandparents were Marines and my dad was in the Air Force, but - eh. Sometimes I feel motivated to do it.
You wouldn't want to be an officer, too much paper work, and not enough action. You should be a Warrent Officer, highest non-officer rank.
Sometimes I think modern warfare is cheap. Why can't it be the good old days of just aiming and shooting like hunting a deer and perhaps throwing some explosives and dropping bombs (not long range bombs). Yea, probably more deadly but a lot less complex. All the crap we have to worry about now, it just seems so cheap. Chemical, Biological, Nuclear, TERRORISM (enemy inside your country HIDING - of all things).
I think that is why I respect the people in World War I and World War II (in particular) because it was a REAL worldwide cause. :D (Vietnam - what was that? Korea - we can't save everyone you know?) We (USA) seem to win the wars where we are attacked first but can't win anything that really doesn't effect us THAT much.
