View Full Version : How the World Cup and Qualifiers should be constructed
Gareth 16-11-2001, 12:59:PM This is how the representatives form each confederation should be organised:
1 For Host (I hate the 2 country host thing)
1 For Holder
14 reps from UEFA
4 from CONMENBOL
3 rom CONCACAF
1 from OFC
4 from CAF
4 from AFC
There are no cross-confederation qualifiers, and no compensation if a conderation has a host or holder nation (ie. COMENBOL with Brazil, and 5th place playoff).
Then the world cup should be structured in the same format as the Champions League, but dont play each team twice, only once. This would mean teams have more time to prove them self with 2 group phases, and would limit the chance of a good team being unlucky in a penalty shootout in the 2nd Round (ie. England in France 98).
This would be a perfect system (playing each team once):
1st Round: 32 teams (8 groups of 4)
2nd Round: 16 teams (4 groups of 4)
Quarter Finals: 8 teams
Semi Finals: 4 teams
3rd Place
Final
And there you have it.
ZePenguin 16-11-2001, 01:04:PM BUAH 2 ROUNDS SUCKS ASSS !!!
the champion's league was a lot better before with only one round, and you wanna do the same thing with world cup? LOL
btw quals are perfect now and you only want to change it because you're pissed off australia never qualifies...
Gareth 16-11-2001, 01:50:PM FIFA have to make the competition as much of a league type comp as possible, because a knock out isn't a fair indication of the best team, teams always have a bad day and you just might have one and be knocked out, when you are the number 1 team in the world, thats not fair.
The 2 group phase is loved most people, and is considered the fairest league/knock out system in the world, so you are in the minority. Sepp Blatter (FIFA President) has said there will be big changes for the 2006 World Cup in regards the FInal Competition and Qualifying.
Anway if it was completely up to me, I'd abandon all club games for a year and just have an International League with 5 divisions or so, over a whole season, that would be a very fair indication of the best team in the world, over 30 or more games, rather than 10 or whatever.

The format is quite interesting but to abandon league games to play 1 year's worth of qualifiers is unthinkable. Who's gonna pay the clubs' bills?

It was more of a sarcastic situation.
Gabri Cazotto 17-11-2001, 02:18:AM tro 2006, the Qualifiers shoul be in this way, i think
1 Host (Germany)
1 Holder
15 Europe (if the holder is European, 14 teams + 1 CAF)
5 South America (if the holder is South American + 1 UEFA)
3 AFC
1 OFC (Directly)
2 Concacaf
4 CAF

"1 host, 1 holder. In the event of more than 1 host then the extra place comes from their home confederation. In the very unlikely event of the host nation also being the holders then their home confedration gains an extra spot. If this turned out to be a UEFA nation then OFC would have 2 automatic spots insted of 1 auto and 1 P.O.
13 or 14 UEFA*
1 or 2 OFC*
3 AFC (disagree with them having 4, generally most WC entrants have a poor WC)
3 CONCACAF
4 CONMENBOL
5 CAF
* Play Off would be between best UEFA RP and OFC RP at a neutral venue (either Johannesburg or Tokyo)"
There are no cross-confederation qualifiers, and no compensation if a conderation has a host or holder nation (ie. COMENBOL with Brazil, and 5th place playoff).
"If my system was in place, and Australia and New Zealand co-hosted, then there would be no space for any other OFC side. At least then someone like Fiji could at least get themselves noticed."
Then the world cup should be structured in the same format as the Champions League, but dont play each team twice, only once. This would mean teams have more time to prove them self with 2 group phases, and would limit the chance of a good team being unlucky in a penalty shootout in the 2nd Round (ie. England in France 98).

"The one flaw with that would be hardly anyone would turn up for the first round matches, apart from the host nation and the surrounding countries. That's why it works in the CL, as there is always someone playing at home. Your idea isn't new though, it was the format for the 1974,78 and 82 world cups, except for 74 and 78 it was like this
1st round: 4 groups of 4
2nd round: 2 groups of 4, with the group winners advancing to the Final, and the runners up advancing to the play offs. In 74 the West germans took advantage of this system to avoid Holland in the 2nd phase by deliberately losing to East Germany. The format for 82 was slightly different as 24 teams took part
1st round: 6 groups of 4
2nd round: 4 groups of 3, with the group winners advancing to the semi finals. 82 WC was also the first time penalties were used."
And there you have it.
Sweden Boy 17-11-2001, 12:34:PM For Germany 2006 y will like
Host(1)
Champion(1)
UEFA(15)
Conmebol(5)
CAF(5)
CONCACAF(2)
AFC(2)
OFC(1)
Ruben Sosa 17-11-2001, 12:52:PM I currently like the way the WC and WCQ are played, only little change I'd make is take one spot away from UEFA and give it to OFC.
ZePenguin 17-11-2001, 01:12:PM Hum think it's perfect now...maybe with a playoff uefa-ofc
except combine oceania with Asia
