View Full Version : After 2.5hrs of PES - I have some PROBLEMS.
JonnyDp 22-11-2001, 12:00:PM Perhaps I expected too much. Perhaps Nobody else has had these problems.
1- The commentry is saying the same phrases as PE2 - "That's 100% commitment".
2- I have a widescreen TV and I have to switch to 4:3 mode on the TV because there is NO option in the game to change it to Wide, meaning everything looks stretched and fuzzy.
3- A few problems whilst playing the game that I can see being ironed out in time......
The big one

4- The instructions tell me that to perform a 1-2, you have to press L1 + O to initiate it, then press O b4 the other player recieves the ball to carry it on. (This was the 1st indication of a problem -) THEN it says "or press O to perform a lofted return"
The problem is that L1 + O performs a cross - from WHEREVER you are.
Fair enuf I think, it must mean L1 + X, like in ISS - Nope.
What about L1 + X, then X again - Nope.
That's OK, there is an option to change the button config so I'll do it in there - Apart from the fact you can only change the button config for about 5 different Fecking things
Am I the only person to suffer this???? Does no-one else use the 1-2 when you're 2v2 or 2v3 on the last defenders, or to get space to make the cross???
Without 1-2's, particularly on the harder levels my game will fall to a standstill.
I spent an hour, just on the training ground seeing what would work. Double taping, holding this or that down, diferent combos. If this is an error, it's not on. Why even change it in the first place?
5- The instructions are poorly done - not enough info on shooting, passing etc. It appears you'll have to find a lot ut for yourself. I can only imagine that an "Official Guide" is being lined up.
6- Navigating menus isn't done in the best way - this is part of the presentation.
Finally 7- The graphics aren't as good as I'd hoped, they're good but nothing amazing - The replay was easier to manipulate in PE2.
beavis 22-11-2001, 12:08:PM for a ground 1-2 press L1 + x, then after the ball is almost at your team mate's feet, hit triangle.
for an aerial 1-2, press L1 + x, then after the ball is almost at your team mate's feet, hit circle.
if it doesn't seem to work at first, experiment with the timing of when you press the triangle or circle.
It's kind of wierd at first if you're used to the psx game because it is a 3 button combo instead of 2.

Cheers mate!!!! - what do your instructions say?
I did notice that L1+X made the player pass then start running, but I was pressing X for the second pass.
I just need to work on my shooting...................
grashed 22-11-2001, 12:13:PM Hey man, you just got the game, it will take time mate to figure out things, so don't panic.
Also, we all know that the presentation of the interface is not that good, but it dosen't take a brainy person to work out the interface.
Anyway you just go the GAME, play the game and post back next week.
beavis 22-11-2001, 12:19:PM - what do your instructions say?
I don't have PES, but the 1-2 has been like this since WE5, and I got the translation of the controls from an Italian site. They update a lot and may have the controls for PES soon.
Here's the link:
http://www.wegrinta.it/English.shtml
For the controls for JLWE5, which should be the same as PES, click on the 5 at the top menu, then choose J-leage WE5, and the controls are under the directional pad icon in the menu bar.
Pere Ubu 22-11-2001, 05:07:PM The commentary - what did you expect?? Even when Pro Evolution Soccer 2020 on the Playstation 9 comes with a full face Virtual Reality helmet and a 7-foot-tall Simulated Environment Chamber to convince your brain you're on the pitch in any football stadium in the world, the commentary will still be by Chris James and a now-geriatric Terry Butcher, and will still consist of 8 phrases repeated over and over. I only have the commentary on when playing friends, when things have degenerated to the point where we're just being silly, laughing ourselves stupid as Barthez dribbles past eight opponents and crosses the halfway line and Chris intones "the crowd are starting to lose interest in the game", then 2 minutes later pipes up that they can't take their eyes off the action. The commentary sucks, will always suck - good job I always turn the sound down and play music instead.
CosaNostra 22-11-2001, 10:02:PM 4. The 1-2 is much better now!
It's nt as easy to split through a defense, but that's a good thing.
You set up a 1-2 with L1+X. The player who set up the 1-2 will start running into space. You can then either give it direct, or create some space or decide not to give it all, and opne up on the other side of the pitch. Youcan use either X, Triangle, Or L1+Triangle for the return pass.
Experiment with it.
2. I have a Wide-Screen TV, with a 'Superzoom' function. Perfect image, full-screen......
5. Ehm, I actually like to find out for myself. Give me the base commands and I'll develop my own style of button-use......
6. yep, your right here
7. Okay, maybe TIF has better graphs. But haven't yu noticed player animations? There soooo good. Graphs could have been better though
My personal biggest problem till now has been: No custom replay mode. Why don't they put this in?
JonnyDp 23-11-2001, 12:37:AM That's better!
I think my annoyance at the 1-2 thing spilled over too much!
It was just so frustrating last night, with the intructions being wrong and no way of changing the config!
Although I've taken the crosses off "auto", they seemed to go too close to the keeper.
Before that post I'd played 6 games and caned the practice mode.
1st game (best I played!!)
I played as Holland in the default formation. I didn't quite work as van N was CF with Zenden and Overmars as wingers. Kluivert was an OH - not his most effective.
I made some slight alterations though.
It was on level 3 against England.
I scored after about 20 mins, Thru ball to Zenden down the left, it almost went out but he just kept it ran down the wing hit a (double O tap) cross to van N who slid in at the far post 1-0.
Just before half time and a couple of deflections on the edge of the box and the ball fell to Heskey in space - 1-1
Just after half time, Beckham jinked around on the right wing and played in a loopingcross which Heskey met unchallenged - 1-2.
At this point their defence got complacent (especially Cole & Campbell). The second time I caught them in possession van N was clean thru and hit a low shot across the face of the goal - 2-2
Another piece of bad defending resulted in a corner and despite his recent ban, Stam nodded it in at the near post. - 3-2
Stupidity! Just before the end of the game, Beckham ran down the edge of my box, the ball was going out. I thought it'd be "fun" to slide in on him. Cocu is red carded and Owen converts the penalty! - 3-3 This really must have been given in a square inch of the box at the touchline!
In the 27th minute of Extra time, Heskey put Owen clean thru and that was that - 3-4
The next game I optes for a 3-5-2 formation with van N and Kluivert up front that way I still get the width and Kluivert isn't wasted.
I easily won this game 2-0, with 63% pessesion.
So I opted for an International Cup, with randomly selected teams (me still as Holland)
Game 1 v China = 0-0
Game 2 v Sth Africa = 0-0
Game 3 v Czech Republic = 0-0!!!!
This is when my frustration about the 1-2 came about. To break down teams playing so defensively the 1-2 ius essential, as well as my shooting being TERRIBLE.
I tried a game against Sweden and lost it 1-0, again my shooting was the primary problem, but I did hit the post with a beauty of a freekick!
Roll on tonight!
m_robbo 23-11-2001, 12:47:AM So have you resolved your widescreen problem yet JonnyDP? I'm picking up a widescreen television and I was hoping to play PES on it, y'know, so I could see more of the pitch, etc. Have you managed to sort it? What's 4:3 (is that a normal square picture?). Isn't there an option on the PS2 itself that you can change so all games can be viewed in widescreen? That's what I was banking on. What's the superzoom function that CosaNostra mentions, how does that work, and how does exactly that alter the picture? And on the game itself, can the game speed be altered in any way?? Soo many questions.. anyone with answers?!
JonnyDp 23-11-2001, 12:59:AM I have a top of the range 32" Toshiba, it has a mode something similar to Superzoom called "Cinema" - But there is inevitable stretch involved.
It's not unplayable like that, but TIF 2002 is the best example (as it's another footy game). If you turn the Wide mode (in the game) on and off, you can tell that has more info on screen. e.g the player just out of vision on 4:3 is now visable. It looks really good as a result.
All 16:9 widescreens have to stretch a 4:3 image to show it on that size - most of the time it's done gradually towards the ends so the bit in the middle is fine and but the other parts are stretched. For example, if you are taking a free kick which is right of centre, the right hand post appears centrally and the left hand post looks fine towards the left edge of the screen, the problem is that the crossbar has been stretched so the goal looks unproportionally wide.
It's perfectly playble, but nearly all new PS2 games have an option which sends the best size picture to Widescree TVs - it's a pity that PES doesn't.
CosaNostra 23-11-2001, 01:05:AM mr_robbo,
dunno about more to see on the screen. Superzoom is a function that's on my wide-screen t.v. It fills the entire screen, but I don't think you see more then on a regular t.v. Haven't noticed strech, but it's probably there.
No, you can't change game speed. You don't have to either, caus it's good. I'm starting to think it's quite accurate.
Jonny,
With shooting, there's analogue involved. So don't press the square to hard.
JonnyDp 23-11-2001, 01:10:AM In the KCEO game shooting was full analog. The harder you press the button, the harder the shot. In PES, there is still a shooting gauge, is the initial strength of the press hgow hard the shot is, and the guage relates to the hieght?
My main fauklt was putting them WELL wide.
the_man 23-11-2001, 01:56:AM It takes months/weeks (new evolution player/old evolution player) to know whats going on with a new game...when i say this people never believe me...they always think i'm exaggerating. As time goes out on you will get used to the shooting, the passing, positional play and so on.
FIOT Commish 23-11-2001, 02:07:PM That's really too bad about the lack of widescreen support. I had thought that pretty much all titles coming out now would support this. It really does look like crap in stretched mode and using the TV's zoom is going to look nearly as bad, as well as lose some info on the top and bottom.
And for whomever asked earlier, the widescreen settings from the PS2 options themselves only affect DVD playback.
This (well and maybe the commentary) is the only area where FIFA has an edge - they have wonderful widescreen support.
l.cardon 23-11-2001, 10:59:PM Sorry to bother, but in the manual is also mentioned a "three-different-mode" lob (defined by 1, or 2, or 3 presses of the O button)....
Still praticing, but it seems no big difference... Someone can give me some hints 'bout that? What differences? The button press is timing relevant? Or what else?
Thanks in advance.

One press is a normal cross or high ball
Two presses is a shorter, more lobbed ball
Three presses is a short lob
Press the button fast! :)
