View Full Version : Should the Worthington Cup be scrapped?
Gareth 12-12-2001, 04:49:PM I think it should be, they should just have the FA Cup, especially now that there are more European games. Its basically just more games clubs have to play that ultimately dont mean anything.
What are your thoughts?
leungtl 12-12-2001, 05:00:PM It's a chance for younger players who don't get any field time during Premier League matches/UEFA Competition to get some field time and impress the selectors.
But by saying that, it's a chance for some of the 'less competetive' sides to actually realistically win something :)

ABSOLUTELY !!!!!!!
Well said:o
rumanu? 12-12-2001, 07:53:PM it has history too so it shouldn't be scrapped.
ytwoaone 12-12-2001, 10:21:PM Thw WorthNothington Cup offers a UEFA Cup spot to the winners, but I think the UEFA spot should be given to the league, and the winners get a Inter Toto spot instead.
Apart from teams such as Spurs and Newcastle, few PL clubs actually bother with this tournament, especially those with title or Champions League amibitions. But it gives a chance for the younger players to have a run out, and it gives lower league clubs another chance apart from the FA Cup to draw a big name and make some much needed cash.

if you take away the uefa cup spot then they will be no incentive for teams to win the cup...
mhflierman 13-12-2001, 01:35:AM The Worthington cup doesn't mean anything to me. But it is a great chance for young players to develop. But you can see that the big clubs also don't really care about it. Just look at the teams that Arsenal and ManUtd field.
ShearerM4 13-12-2001, 03:10:AM of course it shouldn't be scrapped .... you are crazy
It's the LEAGUE Cup ... it says is in the title .. a competition for all teams in the football league.
the FA cup is for teams in the Football Association.
I don't find it dull at all, and you say that winning it means nothing ... I don't think so The Pool were well pleased last season and rightly so
monkee 13-12-2001, 03:23:AM No. But the FA shouldn't get shirty if the big teams like Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool, etc. field weaker teams than they would for other competitions. It's bottom of their trophy lists anyway.
It shouldn't be scrapped though because it gives other teams another chance at winning and making some money.
:monkey:
monkee 13-12-2001, 03:26:AM If it was the only trophy that Liverpool had won last season nobody would consider them as improving. Nobody would even think of it. Who remembers the last 5 winners of this cup? Who remember who won the last 5 FA Cups, Premierships, Champions Leagues?

Sweden Boy 13-12-2001, 03:33:AM The worthington cup should be of Division 1 teams and some EPL
teams that r at the bootom of the table
ShearerM4 13-12-2001, 03:37:AM absolute crap talk ...
the League Cup is an institution and should'nt and won't be moved
monkee 13-12-2001, 03:56:AM I don't think it should be scrapped. I wouldn't miss the Worthington Cup if it were scrapped, but a lot of teams would. It can be a good money spinner for clubs that don't make lot of money, and can make a huge difference for them.

What if u changed it so it would include teams from Scotland, Wales, and Ireland? What do u think about that?

Yeah change it to the UK Cup just for 1st and Premier League teams from the UK, yet still offer the Uefa Cup spot. I think Man U might regret not putting in a decent squad for it, since they might not get the UEFA Cup spot in the league :)
ytwoaone 13-12-2001, 10:12:PM But they can't take the risk og having to many matches. Any UK Cup might sound good but it won't take off though. But I reckon the Charity Shield should be between the English and Scottish Champions.
ShearerM4 14-12-2001, 08:23:AM well ... some say like Wenger that it should be scrapped but that's all very nice if you're sitting at the top.
But for the rest it's a chance to get some silverwear. 3rd major honor in England.
If Arsenal, Man U and Liverpool all of whom have tough schedules in the Champs league don't wantto play in the cup, then they sohuld be allowed to sit out. Its a waste of the players time and energy.
ShearerM4 15-12-2001, 08:21:AM actually I think it's a good idea to play your reserve team
that's what I would do if I didn't care about it. COz it gives them a bit of match practice.
You don't see Alex Fergie complaigning about it .... even though every year he plays the most suprising line ups.
