This was the last great World Cup. Ever since the WC has become an event where even crap games like Jamaica and Japan are sold out. Go back to Italia 90, HELD IN ONE OF FOOTBALLS most passionate nations and there were empty seats everywhere. I go back through my tapes and watch games like Uruguay vs South Korea and there are only 27,833 people there. Half the stadium is empty. It should always be like this. But I am sure that at Jap/S Kor 2002 even Costa Rica v Turkey will be a sellout. Italia 90 was not as bad as it seemed. It had a real atmosphere and some truly rude teams. But they were better than most of todays sides. The German, Italian, English, even Brazil nearly, were world class looking back. More importantly it proved that even the final was not sacred. That it was the first final where the losing side did not score, and two players were sent off, is irrelevant, it had to happen. It was not 1970 anymore and teams did not go out to lose with glory. Now the WC is bloated and not quite as exciting. Should have left it alone. And had it in Italy again.

Seeing as there were only 39.000 seats at the Uruguay vs. South Korea match, I'd say 28.000 people isn't such a bad turn out as well as considering both countries are pretty far from Italy and more than 90% of the population struggle to pay bills, much less afford round tickets to Europe and the entry fee for the match (well, I'm not sure if in SK it's like that, but I know it is in Uruguay).

The only World Cup I remember is France 98 so it is my favourite :D

I have 70 video clips of France 98 goals on my PC - all great quality. I watch them all the time. :)

Italia '90 was amazing. I remember it well. The theme tune. That strange box-man with a football head as the logo. Argentina-Cameroon in the opening match, Englands penalty shootout against Germany which almost caused the national grid (electricity supply in UK) to fail - that was due to a large proportion of the British population getting up and switching their kettles on at half-time, they never thought that much power would be needed at any one time. :D

Who could forget Salvadore Schillachi!!! :)

USA '94 wasn't too bad, started as it finished though with Diana Ross missing the penalty at the start and Baggio missing the one at the end. :) Some good football there though.

France '98 was a bit flat I thought. I believe that that French team was one of the worst to ever win the WC, although they have improved since. A dire final (I thought Brazil were supposed to play). But some exciting matches none-the-less, England-Argentina to name but one.

I can remember Mexico '86 too (well some bits anyway, I was 7 at the time). That was a good one. Maradona's hand-of-God goal. Brazil getting knocked out by Argentina.

Not to sound like a snob but it was France that eliminated Brazil in 86.:)

Oh yeah. Got confused with Italia '90 where Argentina did knock out Brazil 1-0.

I have to agree the last 4 WC ranked must be

1998 France
1986 Mexico
1994 USA
1990 Italy

As I recall it both USA and Italy had a lot of destructive play where there was lesser room for creativity and extravaganza!!!....
