What is your world XI of all time?

( I ddin't include one because when I did, there were some positions i couldn't fill. I'm looking for people's ideas)

J.Karlsson

Lev Yashin

Nilton Santos - Franz Beckenbauer - Bobby Moore - Paolo Maldini

Luis Monti - Diego Maradona - Lothar Matthäus

Garrincha - Pelé - Johan Cruijff

Subs:
Gordon Banks
Franco Baresi
Michel Platini
Ferenc Puskas
Gerd Müller

I've chosen a 4-3-3 formation with Nilton Santos and Maldini as wing-backs. I'm not saying that Matthäus was better than Platini, I just wanted two defensive midfielders to cover up for Maradona & Co. If you know of any great defensive midfielders, please let me know! In the attack I have Garrincha on the right wing and Pelé as a centre-forward. Cruijff...well, he's the master of total football, so he plays wherever there's an open space... :)

I know I've left out Alfredo Di Stefano, Zico, Marco van Basten, Leonidas, Bobby Charlton etc, etc... but there's only room for 16 players in my team...

Has anyone thought of Zoff as a keeper. '82 captain lead Italy to WC success. 1,143 minutes without conceeding a goal, that's a record. European success. Club side success. And 112 international caps. I think deciding between him and Yashin is tough, but I say Zoff.

I've noticed that no-one has any defensive midfielders in their teams...they are all attacking midfielders...how's that going to work? What about Joszef Boszik, the hungarian right-half of the 50s? I haven't actually seen him play, but I've read an article about that Hungarian team and Boszik was regarded as one of the all-time greats in his position.

Maradonna in his prime was great but if he were 20 now he would be just another average player in todays game.

Example one of his most famous goals where he "deeked" the entire team from half field and scored (with argentina vs i forget who). If he tried that in todays game he wouldn't get passed the first player.

In My opinion a greatest player of ALL TIME would be a player no matter what year is is COULD still Play uber if they were young again many years later and in current day.

Pele's Ball control was untouchable he was a god on the ball. If he was in his 20's today He'd still be godly where as maradonna would just be an average player. The only REAL Uber talent that maradonna could do well these days maybe is his shot.

That is why i didn't include him in my ALL-TIME XI.

Ronaldo is self explanitory. This season he isn't doing well but thats normal. When you are so young and win player of the year and start the next season injured and return couple months in its very hard to keep that form especialy now he has the pressure on world player of year on his head at such a young age its too much pressure for him to keep that phenomial form of last season

Ronaldinho is Probably the closest player that could maths Pele's godly ball control. Pele will probably never EVER be matched on his ball control again. (not for many years at least) yea now adays Ronaldinho isn't at his best.

We are talking about ALL Time XI not based on their CURRENT form. Ok C Ronaldo is kinda too soon to say World time XI but he will soon definetely be on that list.

When i made that starting XI it was quickly off the top of my head so players are in wrong position.

Also Geoarge best WAS a Attacking Midfield as well as a winger BTW.

here is a slightly updated list

---------------P. Schmeichel
Rijkaard---Beckenbauer--Bobby Moore--Baresi

George Best -- Ronaldinho -- Maradonna -- C. Ronaldo
----------Cantona----Pele------

Just cause you all love Maradonna so much i will put him in to make you guys happy. Also i cant think right now of a better keeper (in my opinion) than Schmeichel but i'm sure their is one i will update that later.

Also i can't think of a Central Defensive Mid who would be best of all time to fit in this XI ATM. so maradonna will tkae the place for now

Troll confirmed,

so? i'm not a "fanatic" who are super obsessed with footy like it is their lives and like 1 team and wish every other team would die.

I'm a fan of the sport. I like the players on both teams and the way they play. I am a fan of the CLUBS not the city they represent. When it comes to the cities themselves i don't really like one over the other.

Why can't i like both Manchester teams. Their is absolutely no reason why i can't like both teams. Whooptydoo a small meaningless rivalry - just cause they are rivals i can't like both teams? I can like whoever the **** i want to.

Just cause i call someone a "retard" for making a really stupid comment and trying to say a completly false comment as fact automatically makes me a Troll? a troll is someone who likes to cause trouble.

I state my personal opinions on people/things and just because 1 (or more) of my opinions are negative i automatically get bashed?

You guys act like i have to like absolutely every player and everything. Oh i say Berbatov is **** stating my personal opinion and people call me retarded stupid moron etc. and make me look like a bad guy just because i dislike a player. Frankly thats Immature responses form you people.

Also i thought Messi was overrated (up until this season) again stating my personal opinion and Barca Fans come in with their biased ego based responses and call me stupid retarded moron etc. completely uncalled for they don't get bashed yet i do just for stating my "opinion" instead of them for being douche bag's/

Also people who say Cantona sucks deserve to be called Retarded. His skill and ability is amazing i can post lot of videos of amazing Cantona goals that most other strikers wished they could do let and with the ease Cantona did that they wish they could do.

Yes not every year/season of his career has been fantastic but does every single player play amazing or great for every single 1 of their seasons? NO.

Ok i admit i was to harsh and this is a bad habit of mine. I shouldnlt of been so harsh and i apologize.

As will no one else.

EDIT: Must've been a ****ty weekend for you, by the way... :)

what i was trying to say is the way maradonna deeked all those players would never happen today. All he did was a small touch of the ball slightly in a different direction each player he passed and frankly if you get passed so so so damn easy like that you shouldn't be playing footy. Have people stopped and looked at the other side of the story which was the defending in that play? It was HIDEOUS.

people in ecent years have deeked entire teams or most of teams. But they did it in an intellegent way. Like say ronaldinho using his "flip-flap" to put the ball through players legs to get past them etc. not how Maradonna did it then and people hail that goal as such an "uber goal" maybe at that time it was a amazing goal but all time wasn't that special as realistically that couldn't happen now the way he did it.

That goal was supposedly his best ever goal pretty much or close to it and frankly didn't impress me that much and that is why i don't think Maradonna is 1 of the best players of all time of his time period defiently no doubt.

That should clarify what i meant i hope.

You ask why you can't like both teams in a rivalry. I guess there's nothing really stopping you. Perhaps you see through much of unnecessary antagonism that rivalries instigate, and perhaps that's a very good thing. On the other hand, rivalries aren't just arbitrarily created; they develop over time due to a series of actions which provoke the "other side." In derby matches, frequently local politics boil over into sports. Each team's supporters tend to align themselves to one side of an issue, so when two teams meet and the supporters of team A happen to be vehimently opposed to some issue the supporters of team B tend to be for, suddenly the game becomes symbolic of the larger argument. For examples, read up on the Old Firm derby and el superclasico.

Other times, it's just the culmination of lots of on-field issues (as occurred in Manchester). This can even occur in high school games. It did when I played. There were a few towns which were notorious for having blatantly biased refs as well as generally playing dirty. When we went there, we didn't take any crap, and it pretty quickly became personal. We loved kicking the crap out of them, to get back at how badly they hacked us up and how many goals their refs disallowed (the record was 5 in one game - a state tournament qualifier). They, in turn, hated us because we routinely beat them on neutral ground or our home field. We "stole" their championship the year after they stole ours. By my senior year, we were damn near ready to fight before we even got off the bus. All this in a stupid, pointless, youth league.

So, we've established that rivalries are really just both sides trying to get revenge on one another for previous times they've been "wronged," whether on the field or off. Following this, team A expects team B to do something to hurt them, whether through humiliation or dirty play, whatever. They have in the past, so they probably will again, so the thought goes. Thus, if you support team B, you're supporting the people who are trying to hurt team A. Seems a little contradictory to say you like team A, but you also like the people who are out to hurt team A (and vice-versa), doesn't it?

This is one thing I don't quite understand. It seems that when fans figure out that their team (Team A) has an intense historical rivalry with Team B, then it's as if they force themselves to hate Team B like some sort of obligation resulting from fellow fans also hating Team B because they "have to".

i won't be using players like Charlton, Cruyff, or Pele, or Eusebio. Not even Maradona. I've seen their video tapes, I even became a Paul Breitner fan, but I can't compare them to today's players with an honest and wise opinion. I didn't watch them in their prime, I didn't see them every weekend along their carreer like the ones I'm actually picking.

I think it's easy to go and pick the "classics" that the ol'man keeps talking about, but I think it's only fair you should pick only the players you really know, from the football seasons you lived, am I right? I mean, I consider Maradona the greatest talent (not exactly the best player) to ever step foot in a football pitch. But I say that from the tapes I watched, because during my lifetime all I saw Maradona do was score a great goal in 94 and then get banned from the sport... I did not live his prime.

Aaaanyway, I started watching the game around Euro 92 in Sweden, I was 4 or 5, so my picks for the best XI (and subs) are based on 92-09:

GK: Peter Schmeichel (Vitor Baia)
DL: Roberto Carlos (Ashley Cole)
DR: Cafu (J Zanetti)
DC: Maldini (Cannavaro)
DC: Marcel Desailly (Jaap Stam)
ML: Ryan Giggs (Stoichkov)
MR: Luis Figo (Cristiano Ronaldo)
DM: Lothar Matthaus (Roy Keane)
AM: Zinedine Zidane (Gianfranco Zola)
FC: Ronaldo (Romario)
FC: Weah (Bergkamp)

^ I remember Vitor Baia being quite error prone. I guess I'm wrong on that one? And yay for Stoichkov :)

No, you're not wrong at all. Baia was certifiably insane.

absolutely, but I consider that to be a key atribute in a goalkeeper....

Ah, well, him trying to bite Heiko Herrlich, running across the field to score a goal with his fists, Kung-Fu Kahn against Chapuisat.

He did some crazy ****, but he toned it down after 2001 or 2002.

I don't remember the other stuff, but punching the ball into the net was hilarious. Come on, the game was over, why not?

sure, you dont need a clássic 9 to score goals. Your second point has his logical, milan are the masters in defensive terms and holland/barça in midfielders.

Nothing personal mate, it is just that Turks around here are fun to read sorta. :p

PS: Out of curiosity what are you from? Romanian?

I forgot to put any Brits in that list but other than Sir bobby Charlton no one deserves it. Maybe Alan Shearer a little but that it. :p

do i write like a Romanian ? :)

..hmm okay i see the problem is not personal..but you're being offensive about that .. and feel like a nationalist .. and while we were having the previous discussion people pointed 'ME' as a nationalist .. well im againts nationalism!! but whenever i see people acting like a nationalist i become a harder one to show them how nationalism sucks and its dangerous and unnecessary in this global world .. but i 'lol'ed' it .. im not even a Turk ( or Türk (H) ) well , i live in Istanbul n love it but i kinda understand your thoughts about their 'wtf' messages..it is , because Turkiye is a really big country with population around 70.000.000 and Turkish youth is not that open to Europe n the USA .. most of them dont know english well .. but that doesnt mean we all suck .. yea ?? Pele (c)- Ronaldo

Subs: Yashin, Rijkaard, Baresi, Cannavaro, Sammer, Gascoigne, Best, Beckham, Platini, Del Piero

Lev Yashin
Carlos Alberto-Beckenbauer-Moore-Maldini
Maradona-Cruyff-Neeskens
Pele-Ronaldo-Puskas

Edited to put Neeskens in. Like I said up top, **** it, why not?

I'd say the most important thing I was looking for was playing in the NASL, and even more preferably, for the Cosmos (H)
