PolishPower 12-12-1999, 03:31:AM Football greats according to who? the English Premier league propaganda brochures?
You picked 10 out 11 of your current team from English league by the way. Also 10 out of 11 in "British" leagues for team of decade, and 11 out of 11 for century team.
Also you spelled Schmeichel wrong...
Neutral 12-12-1999, 04:30:AM I know everyone puts Schmeichel as their number one goalie of all time, but for those who can remember, the finest goalie of all time was the great Lev Yashin, the 'Black Panther' was the greatest goalkeeper ever, when he retired in 1970 a 100,000 people went to see his final match which included legends like Pele, Eusebio and Franz Beckenbauer who all went to Moscow for his farewell match. I understand for a lot of us The Great Dane has been one of the best goalies but Yashin was the best ever.
Ï remember Yashim as the black spider", isn't it?
I like Schmiechel very much, but Yashim change the way goalkeeper play, they play as they play today thanks of Yashim.
After many of this Team of the century, I start to think that 80% of the guys at this msg group didn't what a game before the 80's.
On the last 5 players of the century, Berkamp, Beckham and Schmeichel get more votes than Puskas.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

astolfo 12-12-1999, 05:04:AM Well, I'm too young to make the "TEAM OF THE MILLENIUM" but I can do my Palmeiras of the 90's:

Sella 12-12-1999, 07:49:PM British teams, although maybe not the best ever, have certainly made lasting impressions (and might I not that 2 of the treble-winning teams hailed from the great UK) and supplied many of the best players ever, and still do today. (And, of course, they play the most beautiful football in Europe, something you can't accuse Italians of.)
As for Schmeichel? How can there be any doubt? Even without naming his accomplishments and multiple awards (but how can I ignore a TREBLE), his commanding presence as captain of the defense (and often the team) and offensive abilities can do nothing less than name the best goalkeeper today, tomorrow, possibly (probably?) ever. Also, some of us like to factor in *style* as a criteria - something a certain Dane had none missing.
And about the Decade team, some players who I feel aren't getting the recognition they deserve for their participation in club and national competitions: Bierhoff, Del Piero and Rivaldo. Their teams (local and national) hold them as key players and their influence is immense.
What do you think?
GOONERBHOY 13-12-1999, 01:31:AM At last someone with some sense CELTIC FC.

PolishPower 13-12-1999, 06:59:AM Goonerboy: your team of the century contains maybe 1 player who could be on the real team of the century.
Half the people on your team would not even make top 100 of the century.
How do you put Bergkamp on the team of the century when any reasonable person would say both Cruyff and Van Basten were better than him?
Jimmy Johnstone was god, anyone who says anything different needs nuking
GOONERBHOY 13-12-1999, 09:36:AM PP,
I believe that the mojority of the players today are better than the majority of yesterdays. There are some exceptions and these are the greats of the game Because modern football is the toughest ever and to me Dennis Bergkamp is the perfect player he does not only diserve to be in the team he is the greatest in the team. You `ll have your opinions and i`m not discrediting Van Basten or Cruyff infact they are favourites of mine but my view of the perfect player is different to the next person and so on.

Goonerbhoy: How could you say todayīs soccer is better? You were there?
Itīs a marketing word.
Today Itīs more physical, but it makes the players better? They have to play hard but not better.
Itīs just marketing! You are going to buy a shirt from a medium player? No! So the market needs 109098 great players! Like the great players that disapear after 1 year. (Just like music)
Today soccer is 50% technique and 50% marketing.
After you say Bergkamp is the best we could end the discussion, because... nevermind...
PS: How old are you?
GOONERBHOY 14-12-1999, 01:11:AM Only 17, but i know my football.
Todays players do have to work harder your right, with more cup`s than ever before. And why do you say "century" It britian we`ve been playing professionally for 120yrs, how old are you?
PolishPower 14-12-1999, 01:54:AM Goonerboy:
I have to agree with Lord, once you start saying things like Bergkamp is in best 11 of century or that Scottish league, or English 1st division is better than Seria A, etc. you lose all credibility. You can't make crazy statements like that and think people will take you seriously.
GOONERBHOY 14-12-1999, 02:04:AM I ment that the scottish prem and english 1st div are better to watch, you don`t need money to put on a show. I think you`ll find there is alot of people agree with that.
sglean 14-12-1999, 04:04:PM Hey Idiots, Soccer/ Fotball is what it is Today because of these guys who would be any eleven on this planet or any other no one can pick a squad without picking at least half of these players
1.Banks Best Goalkeeper ever ask Pele
2.Vogts nuf said
3.Brietner best ever in that position
4.Krol check out Hollad 70 - 78
5.Beckenbaur Every Honor in the game
6.Charlton ask Beckenbaur
7.Cruyff only Pele was better in the 70's
8.Maradonna ask England,ask Germany ask anyone
9.Muller greatest striker ever
10.Pele no need to explain
11Best only mistake was being Irish
No Goonerbhoy not many people will agree with that.
In Brazil no open TV shows the English Championship. We watch Italian and Spanish Championship. The cable tv (ESPN) shows few English games, very few. We donīt like it, they way they play.
And I think Argentina and the rest of South America feel the same way (pls someone from Argentina, Paraguay... help me here).
And I donīt think someone from Italy or Spain will say they like English championship that much.
Just because they have to work harder, be more physical, it make them better players?!
I assume you didnīt watch Puskas, Pele or Cruyff games. Not just WC finals, but at their clubs, at national team...
So you grow up watching Bergkamp playing? Uh... Now I understand... http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif
My best player will be Paulo Vitor! Fluminense Goalkeeper in 80ī. Thatīs the guy I want to be when I was young!
But when we talk about the best team of the Millenium I have to see the facts. And Yashin is better...
PS: 120? Ok letīs talk about the best player of the last century! From 1880 to 1900!
Duh...

GOONERBHOY 15-12-1999, 02:46:AM Lord,
I think you`ll find that more people worldwide are supporters of the english premiership than the SIERI A and SPANISH PREMERA put together!
And More people support a brittish club than any other!
WHY...it`s obvious!
PolishPower 15-12-1999, 06:58:AM Prove your point about England having twice as many supporters Italy and Spain etc. based on what? On your delusional dreams?
GOONERBHOY 15-12-1999, 07:04:AM No, no, actually something you are lacking, COMMON SENSE!
celtic fc 15-12-1999, 07:17:AM British football is the best football to watch.I would watch a scottish or english priemer league match before I'd watch a serie a or spanish primera match!
PolishPower 15-12-1999, 07:35:AM Wow big surprise hearing that coming from a mouth of someone who is Scottish or English or whatever your home country is.
Goonerboy what you call "common sense" in your neighborhood is known as "bollocks" in the rest of the world...
GOONERBHOY 15-12-1999, 08:43:AM PP,
Your talking a fair bit of shlte there. Where`s your team anyway?
kevedo 15-12-1999, 04:31:PM I'm from Argentina and I like english footbal. But, if I have to qualify what I like more, that will be south american football, italian, duch, french and spanish.
I don't know how to make the best team ever, but I'm sure that Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Platini, Eusevio and Garrincha should be there.
I agree with PolishPower.
English Premier is not the most popular.
I look at ESPN site and ESPN international didnīt show the English Premier, but the Spanish League. Why? Donīt know about Japan, Kprea or Africa, but here in Brazil and South America I know why.
Nobody cares! One open channel brought the English Premier sometime ago, but it was a failure, they just show 10 games, no one watch. We just donīt like the way they play.
We like the Italian and Spanish League.
So South AmericaN donīt like the Premier, now what about the European? I donīt think the Italian will say they like the Premier league more... Or the Spanish.
About Sweden, Denmark... I donīt know.
But watching the marketing, the midia cover (ESPN) I would say that Spanish and Italian league are more supported.
BTW just for curious how much fans Manchester United has?
Well I just did this online. SO here is my team:
GK = Dino Zoff
LB = Paolo Maldini
RB = Carlos Alberto
LH = Bobby Moore
RH = Franz Beckenbauer
LM = Johan Cruyff
RM = George Best
RCM = Johan Neeskens
LCM = Michel Platini
striker = Paolo Rossi
striker = Pele
PolishPower 16-12-1999, 05:50:AM Did you see the results for Best players of 20th century in World Soccer?
1.Pele
2.Diego Maradona
3.Johan Cruyff
4.Franz Beckebauer
5.Michel Platini
GOONERBHOY 16-12-1999, 06:02:AM PP,
Acording to who, not me and that`s all i wrote about .I didn`t expect mine to be anything like the majority that`s why i posted it.
Lord,
Here in australia we have Fox sports and we get 3-4 live English games and one Scottish. All of which are repeated the next day and we also have 3 different highlight shows.
But for the rest of the world we have one Italian and one Spanish game none of which are live. And we get 20 minutes of highlights from the entire rounds of the Spanish, Italian, Dutch, French, German and Sth American leagues just to fill in time at the end of the English Prem, Nationwide and Scottish highlights. The aussie media obviously recognises good Football.
PolishPower 16-12-1999, 07:13:AM What, did you expect any different in a country which is part of the Commonwealth?
The coverage in USA(if you have digital dish) blows your coverage out of the water.
And what is the population of Australia, 8 million? Population of Brasil is about 150 million!
GOONERBHOY 16-12-1999, 07:21:AM PP,
I hope for your intelegances sake that 8 was a spelling error, try 18.
PolishPower 16-12-1999, 07:50:AM yep it was just typo 17,086,000 to be exact according to my Webster World Atlas 1995 edition...
by the way heres the 11 of the month for november(3-4-3)formation:
Oliver Kahn(Bayern)
Hoegh(chelsea)-Adams(Arsenal)-Marquez(Monaco)
Djorkaeff(k.slauternt)-Djalminha(Dopor)-Vanderhaeghe(e.mouscron)-Stankovic(mallorca)
Cole(Man U)-Raul(Real M.)-Overmars(Arsenal)
FIFAfreak 16-12-1999, 08:35:AM Certainly domestic leagues in certain regions of the world (like S. America) are going to be more popular than the Premier League. But a lot of people look to the Premier League as a model. And if you asked them what club comes to mind first they would probably say Manchester U. I saw this on a special (might have been a news report, I can't remember) but people out in the deserts & jungles of Africa and Asia were trying to tune in Man U. games on a radio, t.v or whatever they had with a large group gathered around like a tribal meeting. They even styled their own local clubs after Man U. So if all these people are passionately following Man U. which league do you think they follow? The answer is obvious. I'm not saying it's most popular league in the world (it could be) and I definitely DON'T like Man U. but it's something to think about...
For us non dish people in the states, the Premier League gets top priority and full show on Fox Sports. ESPN occasionally shows Spanish Liga and Italian Serie A matches. And thanks to the International channel I get Fox Sports coverage of the German Bundesliga and the Chilean League. Yay!

So you watch English Games in a Comonwealth country... Uhm... Uhmmmmm...
I still think you didnīt watch Puskas, Cruyff, Di Stefano... playing to say Bergkamp is better.
PS: The last time I remember it was 142 Millions.
System Of An Up 16-12-1999, 05:02:PM First of all, i'd like to state that this topic is very retarded. allow me to explain why. actually, the answer is very simple. organized football has only been around for a little more than a century. a millenium refers to a thousand years. that would mean back to 1000 AD. therefore, please rephrase the question to the best team of the last century and a half or since the beginning of organized football. thank you.
Bjorbjorn 16-12-1999, 05:24:PM Soccer leagues....
Right, I feel I must express my opinion on the world's different soccer leagues.
I agree what most have said, English (or more accurately, British) football is the best in the world. At least the most fun to watch. Now, in Iceland we can watch the Icelandic, English, German and Italian leagues, and sometimes we see something from the others as well. (Brazilian etc...) Anyway, German football is generally boring, since the players prefer not to take any chances, but play heavy defence, and when they finally score, they rush back to defend their goal, to ensure their win. Icelandic football is like German football in slow motion. Now, Italian and even more so south american football is booooring. Ok, not boring perhaps, the games can be really fast, really exiting, but usually it's 5 secs of play and then a penalty/free kick/someone lying (<- geddit? lying?? http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif on the ground holding his leg, and then suddenly he's back on his feet shouting at the ref for not blowing his whistle. I mean, look at Ronaldo. In WC france, didn't it get on your nerves how he kept falling down and, oops! accidentally onto the ball? You'd NEVER see anyone do anything like that in England!
Ok, maybe I was too harsh, maybe I was generalizing... There are exceptions, of course. Dortmund's Lehmann springs to mind in the game vs. Rangers when he (quite clumsily, but still did it) put up the goal that ensured a penalty shootout for Dortmund. Those who don't know Lehmann, he's Dortmund's goalie, and he was playing a striker at the end of the game http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif Now that's risky! http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif And so on... But, generally, English football is the fastest, most brutal, most fun-for-the audience.
Right.
Someone's going to be angry now.... http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif
GOONERBHOY 17-12-1999, 01:47:AM Why would anyone be angry that`s spot on. Although you forgot to trash the Spanish league which has to be one of the worst in the world.
I watched Celta Vigo V Athletic Bilbao this morning and i must say i must have only seen a hanful of challenges that were clean. Apart from these every tackle clean or not was awarded with a freekick because of the winging pussy that can`t handle being tackled either that or it was a foul because the defensive quality is non existant.
PS: i knew that Spanish football wasn`t popular but i at least thought the home fans would watch it. But i hear the commentator say that they gave hundreds of school kids free tickets to make it look like they had a crowd, pathetic eh!
BRITTISH FOOTBALL #1
OH my... Oh my now the Spanish league is not popular...
Oh my... Next will be that Celtic is better then Brazil 70, Hungary 54 and Holland 74...
BTW if England made the best players in 120 years, why they just won 1 World Cup? Curious...
kevedo 17-12-1999, 04:35:PM This English vs Latin football discussion is not going anywhere!!! It's a cultural matter. English like to play with a fast transition from defence to attack (kicking the ball to the air) and they like that, and they have their league, so good for them.
But we, south american people, love to see how the ball receive a good treatment. It's slower but the ball pass from one player to another and the players get into the area with the control of the ball. We love that way, and thanks God we have ours leagues.
I'm not saying that ALL south american leagues and teams are good, but please do not judge those leagues based in one game of an small league. Try to see Brasilian teams like Corinthians, Palmeiras, Vasco or Argentinian River, Boca, San Lorenzo or Velez
Edoardo 17-12-1999, 09:00:PM I belive that the most popular leagues are the Italian and Spanish leagues for one simple reason they have the best foreign players in their squads.example argentinians will watch fiorentina games just to see Batigol and Brazilians will watch Inter to see Ronaldo.the same goes for chileans wih salas in lazio and the dutch want to see half their national team that plays in Barcelona.theres also a lot of small countries that will see these two leagues because their star player made it there.example george weah and i bet many paraguayans are watching bayern games because Santacruz plays there....about the team of the century all i know is one name cant be left out MARADONA with or without coke Diego did it all even scored with his hand kissed cannigia in the mouth shot reporters with his bb gun did numerous interviews drunk called havelange a crook was banned from the u.s.a has nuerous urecognized kids all over italy ,won a worldcup all by himself and was kicked out of a world cup,took napoli to the top ,Destroyed competion in the U-17,drove a tank to practice, scored the gratest goal in worldcup history and he critised nike for adding another color to the boca jrs blue and gold saying "im not wearing this shirt until they take out these silver stripes" while wearing a puma shirt (what a way to cut a promo) and last but not least he dethroned PELE.....the only thing he didnt get to do was get a monkey drunk this was acomplished by non other than o'animal Edmudo my other hero ....
GOONERBHOY 17-12-1999, 11:40:PM Lord,
The reason that england only won 1 WC is because most of the greats in the english prem were scots. And the reason that we haven`t got past the 1st round is because it`s against our nature to win anything.
and hey the 66/67 Celts could hammer any lineup!
Italy82 18-12-1999, 02:16:AM First of all ,how can you say the premier league is the best .I find it boring .Second ,Im not italian ,in fact I live in Canada ,but we get to see only the premier league and serie A here.At first I like the premier league cause that was the only league I knew at first .Then during the World Cup ,after witnessing Vieri's performance ,I started to watch the serie A and I found out how the premier league sucked compared to serie A.You people can say watever you want about how theres many goals scored in the premier league ,but the fact is the games interesting.Look at Man Utd .Im not sure who they r facing saturday but Iknow there oponents sucks.In italy ,we have Juventus against Fiorentina ,Parma vs Rome and dont forget the top 6 are so close to each other.Last thing ,you got to be kidding when you say that the premier league is seen more than the italian league and spanish league together.Id like to remind you ,most of South American would love to watch Serie A than the premier league .Even though Canada is not a soccer country ,I've notice that serie A has more viewers than the premier League .If you wanna prove that the premier league is better ,fine ,but youll be wasting your time cause nobody can change my mind or any others.
GOONERBHOY 18-12-1999, 04:14:AM Ok i`ll watch my Brittish Football (Real Football), and you watch you Sieri a & Spanish Premera (Europe`s version of a terrible sit com)
NOW LETS GET BACK TO OUR TEAMS OF THE MILLENIUM!
PolishPower 18-12-1999, 06:20:AM Yes this discussion is going nowhere and now some guy comes here and rips the Bundesliga? It is one of the most exciting leagues you can watch! Its as fast paced as any league out there.
You rip these leagues like the were the worst garbage, and in reality they are all great leagues. You who rip Italian leagues are blind and those who rip English must be blind, they both play great football! Spanish league has highest attendance figures of any league in the world last time I checked. Celta Vigo in second place and the stadium was not full? hard to believe...
I do agree with Italy 82, week after week there are great match-ups in Italy, this week you get Parma - Roma and Fiorentina-Juventus. Meanwhile in England we finally have one decent match up: Chelsea-Leeds.
GOONERBHOY 19-12-1999, 07:53:AM Chelsea Leeds (tommorow isn`t it) Did you see ManU V Westham now thats the prem!

Man U won so you know it wasnt that great. Tottenham-Man U now that was a great game but what 2 months ago? And yes finally we get a game on Sunday that could be called match of the week!
By the way I see your picks are starting to improve as far as players and all, I think you are beginning to see the light...
