View Full Version : New Uefa cup format???
Amika 05-02-2002, 02:14:PM they are going to change the current uefa cup format to a mini champions league format... here is the cut out from soccernet...
"The clubs, who included five from the Premiership - Manchester United, Leeds, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea - as well as Rangers north of the border, recommended slimming down the UEFA Cup from 96 to 64 teams, starting with a seeded knock-out preliminary round, then moving into a group stage of 32 teams.
The exact details of the new mini Champions League, which the UEFA Cup is designed to become, have yet to be finalised. "

Jono82 06-02-2002, 01:12:AM So effectively... if this suggestion goes through
there will be two continental tournaments with the same format?
I can summarise this in one word...
WHY?
The UEFA cup should stay the way it is... there's no need to change it!
ShearerM4 06-02-2002, 08:00:AM yeah the simple knock out format is okay ..
why on earth change it
it's only the club in the Champions League that have been calling the WAFA cup euro mikey mouse or what not.
but it still counts a lot for al teams involved innit

EXACTLY! there can be no other explaination. They're just being greedy, and cannot see what financial benefits this sort of competition brings to the smaller European clubs! It's so short sighted, that it seems almost unreal. I wonder. When will these bloomin governing bodys see BEYOND THE MONEY!
OzzeG 06-02-2002, 10:59:AM more matches = more entertainment for us!! As long as the matches dont go on pay per view ****, like itv and sky sometimes do grrrrr.
SB9Dragon 06-02-2002, 11:08:AM I think its better this way...:)

i totally agreed with you on this.. and i think the only thing they should change is the 3rd place finish of the CL 1st phase team to go into the competition which devalue the competiton...
SB9Dragon 06-02-2002, 02:24:PM Amika, if they change it, then that would be changed also. now the 3rd place loser in the 1st round wouldn't go to the UEFA Cup. I think it would be great. Can u see an Italian Dominated Cup? I can't because Inter will be in the CL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D :crazyboy:
Amika 06-02-2002, 02:36:PM i don't know why but in recent years italian clubs always struggle when it come to cup competition.. and can't see that improving also...
ShearerM4 07-02-2002, 01:19:AM well yeah obviously the more money factor is what the FIFA thrive on .... even more so I must say do the UEFA !!!!
it's just sadder and sadder
INFESTA 07-02-2002, 01:33:AM Yeah, guys, it is sad that they only care about money...:(
However, this may actually be a positive change for the smaller clubs. Let's wait and see.

No it wouldn't it would lessen the entertainment value as there would be too many meaningless games like in the CL.
In my opinion I hate the CL early rounds, for this reason.
What's next changing the FA cup to group format, why upset any system which is working.

And you'd think it would make them smarter!  :crazyboy: :D
Silencer 07-02-2002, 10:00:AM I think it's not too bad to change the system in the UEFA-cup.
They should've done that years ago, I like the poulesystem and the fact that if you can't hack it in the CL that you won't be allowed in the UEFA-cup.
Clubs like Feyenoord and so on are always lucky because they are total SH*T in the CL so they don't deserve to play in the Uefa.
Feyenoord SUCKS anyway :p :crazyboy: :monkey:
