REPORT Poland 2 Faroe Islands 1
Sunday 10th February 2002
Poland recorded a less-than-satisfactory 2-1 victory over the Faroe Islands in Cyprus over the weekend, with all the goals coming in an eventful first half.
Coach Jerzy Engel, who made seven substitutions throughout the ninety minutes, saw his largely inexperienced side score after just 12 minutes through striker Maciej Zurawski after some neat work from Pawel Kaczorowski.
However, the Faroe Islands were gifted an equaliser just before the half-hour mark when a mix-up in the Polish defence allowed Argo Jacobson to net from close range.
Poland upped the tempo once again and were rewarded on 43 minutes when midfielder Kamil Kosowski was fouled in the area and Zurawski added his second from the penalty spot.
Engel rang the changes after the break but despite almost constant pressure, Poland could not add to their total, with Maciej Zurawski, Grzegorz Rasiak and Maciej Murawski all guilty of glaring misses.
However, Engel would have been heartened by the performances of Wisla Krakow pair Zurawski and Kosowski who furthered their claims for a place in the final squad for this summer's World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea.
Poland will remain on the island to play Northern Ireland on Wednesday evening.
:( damn
oh well, most of them were rookies so I guess its OK. we are keeping our power for the 13th;)
