View Full Version : Australia's First Gold Medal At Winter Olympics!!!!
WOW! In the speed skating, Steve someone ( I'm not sure, Winter Olympics aren't big here) won the gold, our 3rd medal ever, we also have gotten 2 bronze. First, he comes second in his quarter final. Then in the semi, he was last. Then someone fell. Then 50m to go, 2 guys fell. He finished second qualifying for the final. Then the guy who came first got disqualified so he finishes first in his semi.
Now the final. The last corner he is last. Everyone falls except him. All he has to do is past the finish line. The guy who was first tries to get his skate over the line, but the Aussie wins, AMAZING!!!!!

Sounds familiar doesn't it?... Australia... should have gone to the WC... got shafted by the govening body and beaten by (I can't believe I'm saying this) THE BETTER TEAM! ... The Aussie guy was clearly better on the day in the sense that he DIDN'T STACK IT!!!

Oh yea, I watched that.
I thought were talking about the Canada figure skaters who got silver and felt they had been "cheated" and everyone in Canada got pissed so now Russia and Canada are getting gold medals.
And for the record, most Americans dont care about the winter olympics....

ZePenguin 18-02-2002, 04:34:AM Haha i watched it and it was excellent...and the thing is that he had the exact same thing in the semi final, two guys felt and he could get in the final, he was already lucky to be in the final...and in the final he gets even more luck, he was at least 5 meters behind when it happenened, and he was always at least 1 meter behinf everyone during the whole race :p :p :p
The reason could be that it's in America now, so they are just KILLING the Olympics on TV by having about 8 hours a day on the regular station, NBC. Then on MSNBC (cable) having a few more hours and 24 hour discussions on the Olympics.
Nagano was the lowest viewing point in Winter Olympics in America and I really don't remember seeing much in the FRONT PAGE (except when America did well) of the Sports. But now it takes up half the front page of the whole newspaper, and the whole front page of the Sports--because it's in America.

why should the aussie be penalized because his opponents can't stay on their feets...you don't restart a F1 race because the leader has been crushed by another car...same thing here...it's part of the sport

Exactly. It's all part of the sport. It happens! Just like penalties in soccer, sometimes they're accidents--they don't complain and say, "Can we do that play over PLEASE?"
Even Apolo said that he was happy he was having a the best race of his life, regardless of the medal.
monkee 19-02-2002, 02:49:AM I saw it last night. :D Thought it was fantastic, it's probably what everyone's going to remember about the winter olympics. Like Eddie 'The Eagle' or Eric 'The Eel'.
Can't believe they were saying the race should be restarted, it's against the Olympic spirit. That fella was about a third of a lap down, one slip, everyone gets taken out except him because he's too far back to get involved. A real case of the tortoise and the hair. Good on him. :)
