I have the PS2 version, and at first I hated the passing, but I've found if you use the joystick instead of the direction pad, it's infinitely better once you get used to it. If any of these just come from me not playing well please let me know what I'm doing wrong ;) Anyway, here are my problems with the game:

1. the defence sucks. the AI for the computer is good, but not for the computer controlled guys on the team I'm controlling. Defenders never get back, and will stop running. This makes the game incredibly unrealistic because you can't really play a tight defensive game. Trying to play as a weaker team and squeek out a draw as many teams do is impossible.

2. Autopilot of defenders (mainly): every player can do it, but usually it's defenders when the other team sends long balls. If a long "lob pass" is played the nearest guys will automatically run straight to where the ball is going, even if I'm controlling the guy, and he pressing the button in the opposite direction. This gets very annoying, especially on a ball to the corner where I would probably in a real game just put myself in good position instead of going balls out for the header. This is the only game by EA sports I've played where you don't have full control of a selected player.

3. Auto - heading by defenders. If the computer is going to automatically head the ball out of bounds, could it atleast head it to the side instead of giving up a corner. Again, why can't I have the defender do what I want him to do if I'm in control of him?

4. Corners. Seems completely random, the computer will score sometimes and not others, but it doesn't appear to matter what I do if anything. Again the defensive lapses on corners are not replicated when I'm taking them.

5. guys moving away on 50-50 balls in the air. I think one of the main reasons corners are so hard to stop, but when a cross or a lob pass is played in, the computer must "decide" which player will get to head the ball based on their abilities and hopefully their position. If the other guy will head the ball, your guy will move and stand BEHIND the other guy. So if you lose the header, you are in such a terrible position that you can do nuff all to stop the score. When is the last time you saw a center back move behind a forward because the forward was going to head the ball. This is awful, and has been a problem in the game for as long as I can remember. EA should just set this up like rebounding in their basketball games. Only one guy can get the rebound, but you don't see the other guys moving out of his way.

These are the gameplay type problems, several details are lacking, which many people have mentioned (crowd, names ... ) one I don't think anyone has noticed is that the linesmen (ARs) are on the wrong side of the field. For some reason EA decided the referees would run a reverse diagonal. This is the first thing I noticed about the game (I'm a high school referee). The way EA prides themselves on getting the details right, it's amazing how lacking this game is in them. Other EA games are quite good such as College Football 2002, and the NBA and NHL games.

any comments?
