I like Arsenal and most my friends back home are Gooners so I'm going to step up to defend them - I think people need to make the destinction between being AGRESSIVE and being DIRTY.

Arsenal play an agressive style, but I don't think they're cheap or dirty like Leeds - ie Viduka trying to break Dabizas' leg. Arsenal do give out their fair share of crunching tackles, but they pay for it in red cards - I see no problem with that.

As for Viera, well it's funny how when he's over agressive he's considered reckless or dangerous, but when Roy Keane tries to end Alf Inge Haaland's career and then even has the audacity to trash talk to him while he's lying on the ground in pain he's "just being Keano".

Agreed, you're right about that.

Well obviously it IS a problem, when somebody gets injured because of an Arsenal tackle, and he's unable to play for months why would he bother about the red card given by the ref. He's unable to play for months. I think you should shouldn't see bad tackle vs. red card as a case of equalling things.

Well I'd like to add to this that many seem to forget that Haaland almost ended Roy's carreer BEFORE that. Remember Roy having the knee injury? Let's just say that this was case of sorting things out, payback.

well, that doesn't mean that he can go out and bring justice to his own hand.. it is just like someone kill your wife and you go out and kill the person that do that..

Exactly, two wrongs do not make a right and this is supposed to be the beautiful game, not ice hockey. :)

I was going to say that. Mind you it doesn't justify it and he got a ban for his actions. But a reaction should be punished too. I would say that Keane is aggressive though, not dirty, except in the instance mentioned. Commentators do tend to say that it's Vieira being Vieira, but you don't expect the same action from Parlour or Bergkamp, their not aggressive, physical player.

I agree with you... but... ... ... ... I tried not to mention Carragher but failed. Sorry. :)

It's just it seems that whenever anyone wants an example of something bad it's invariably Man Utd. One of those things that I tend to let go but it does irritate me because I'm a Man Utd fan, just as it's bound to have irritated you that I've just said something bad of one of your fave team's players. :)

There are many other, more recent examples of this sort of inconsistancy in commentators opinions such as Bergkamps stamping, Sheringham's punch (you can't tell me that wasn't a punch, 'let's push him off with a closed fist in his face'). But it's always, Keane, or Beckham... even if it was a long time ago.

Anyway. I've gone well off course now, so ignore what I said above and let's get back to Arsenal's disciplinary record this season.

I do think Arsenal get the short end of the stick sometimes, but if you play an aggressive game you run the risk of misstiming a tackle and getting sent off. Leeds, now there's a dirty team. Always sticking the boot in.

Of course you're completely right about that. I'm not saying that Keane was right to do that, I was just saying that you should keep in mind that Haaland started the feud. It's not just Keane who's to blame.
