Roberto Baggio is set to make a remarkable recovery from knee ligament surgery and return to the field just 38 days after the operation.

The Brescia star was left a shattered man when he tore knee ligaments in the Coppa Italia clash against Parma in late January.

Baggio's official website said, "This morning Roberto began to run again.

"In the opinion of doctors this is a world record: nobody before was able to do it only 38 days after an operation."

The 35-year-old is still hopeful of receiving a recall to the Italian squad for the World Cup finals.

Azzurri coach Giovanni Trapattoni had hinted that Baggio was in the running to make an appearance at his fourth finals but later said that injury would not allow him the option to select the 'Divine Ponytail'.

However, this latest news may change his mind.

HAHA! Baggio in the starting 11, no way. He can't overcome Del Piero, Vieri, Inzaghi (if fit), Montella, Cassano and Chiesa. He shouldn't even come off the bench. He isn't that good anymore, there are others who are better.

He carried Italy in his shoulders in 94, which means he has done more than any of these new young stars. Of course he's not the same Baggio of the old days, but he has the experience, he knows how to get to the WC final. He should be selected if healthy.
