View Full Version : Should I buy Winning Eleven 5 FE?
Decado 02-04-2002, 08:14:PM Bit of a loaded question.
I'd have to play upwards of $170 Cdn to play it.
I'm not particularly familiar with soccer (we get *maybe* 2 international matches a week shown on the television...if we're LUCKY, they're on Saturday...*early*). I like watching the good teams play (Real Madrid, Man United, Arsenal etc.), but don't get the chance very often.
I haven't been particularly impressed with FIFA, MLS or WTS.
I've heard WE5fe is supposed to be very realistic, like a Sim. But is it fun? Do you have to be a Soccer jocky to be able to learn/appreciate it?
If I buy this game will it be the only soccer game I'll need to buy for the forseeable future?
Any good English reviews of WE5fe on the web?
Thanks!
Phayze 02-04-2002, 11:18:PM Short answer yes with a but, long answer no with an if. WE6 is out on the 22nd of April (?), you may as well wait for that. The WE series has always been better than FIFA, MLS or WTS, so don't worry about being unimpressed; well maybe for the first 3 minutes before you get the hang of it, then you'll constantly be surprised at how life like it plays. Buy WE6. Spend the ridiculous ammount of money. Get a multitap. You won't regret it.
pokwang 02-04-2002, 11:34:PM The bigger your love and understanding of soccer, the bigger the joy you gonna get from this game. It is (for the moment - it expires 25/4/2002) the most realistic soccer game by a thousand mile - its like the GT3 of footie games. Now, a little bit of advice - this game has an extremely deep learning curve(not kidding!!!). If you just have a passing interest in football, this game will just be mildly fun to you - most of the time you'll just find it very frustrating. HOWEVER, I really cannot stress enough the importance of patience and preserverence in this game - practice, practice and more practice, dont give up easily and in the end you'll find the most rewarding and deeply satisfying game ever made. If you dont believe me, just ask around;)
Decado 03-04-2002, 12:10:AM Hmmm. OK, thanks.
I forgot to mention: How is the single player game? I have no intention of playing multiplayer.
I am patient. I don't mind steap learning curves...as long as there is a pay-off at the end. My favorite genre is Turn-based tactical games :)
One thing I like about sport games....they're a good/fun way of learning a sport.
Are the controls like MLS ExtraTime? I don't like how the AI contantly keeps a tight rein. Like it's playing the game for you. I know all soccer games do that to an extent, but it was kinda rediculous in MLS, IMO.
As for WE6...that game won't have an English patch for quite some time, though, won't it?
thanks

Are you MAD?! Get some friends, pull homeless people off the street, teach the cat to play, do whatever it takes to play multiplayer, it's the only way to play. The computer, even on level 5 is no match for the fun that comes from playing against a human opponent or 3.
BTW, not being pedantic or anything, but it's a SHALLOW learning curve, time is always measured along the x axis, the thing you're measuring it against on the y axis.

That is usually the way it goes with sport games. However, it ain't gonna happen. Not big gamers.
I don't want it to happen, either. Rather do other things with my friends than play horribly addictive soccer games. :)
