isn't it obvious? the real footy fans go for iss, as they have to measure passes and know automatically when someone runs into space. fifa is too un-realistic.
fifa versus iss? no contest!!!!!!!! iss handsdown!

I will play any football game .. Fifa lacks real gameplay.. but I rented a copy of ISS2 for the Xbox and it stinks ,yes there is some freedom of movement .. but the passing ( no matter how long you pressed down on the pass button) was very poor , player animation ..too much to go on with!! and don't tellme its the xbox's fault.. it was not MS that wrote the program for ISS2.. this version will make me think twice about buying any ISS or PES games.. hope I am proved wrong as I am feed up with Fifa.....

ISS2 is far from representing the Winning Eleven serie in terms of gameplay, realism and quality.
The problem is that a realistic soccer simulation would probably not be successfull is the US (hence no PES on PS2 US)... ISS2 is more arcadish, from a different development studio and flawed anyway... FIFA corresponds more to the US tastes of pick and play gameplay about a sport they don't really care about (I doubt even that the fact the US squad is in 1/4 final of the World Cup will change things significantly, too bad). Realism is good for sports you feel commited to, like US football, Basketball or Hockey.
I got to play WE6 on Japanese PS2 and it is just brilliant. WE5 was very good, but they managed to make it even more so.
That's what I don't like about FIFA games in general, while many elements should need to be enhanced, like AI or the physics of the ball, they just seem to update the stats (very important for the US gamers because very exposed in the typical US sports), polish the cut-scenes and the graphics, but hardly any effort seems to be made about the gameplay. Some might say the gameplay suits the numerous FIFA fans, fair enough, but on a market where the WE serie remains desperately absent, it is just not good enough to content the large and diverse soccer gaming community...

I don't necessarily agree with that. Actually, give Fifa credit for doing much to popularize soccer in America... people love that game here. They don't buy it because it's soccer... soon as you get someone to try the game, they're hooked. I think more sim like soccer games would do well to capitolize on the momentum Fifa has created... many of us who are stuck with Fifa on ps2 are begging for a more sim approach right now... and it's just not coming.

Sorry for the ultra delay, but I haven't tested this world cup match yet, but I got WE 2002 and it's a nice game too.. Every WE is totally better than any FIFA, no doubt about that.. I wonder if Fifa 2003 will be the same s**t as always, but one point makes me think a little... As there is no more World Cup to be in the name of the game, I think it's probable that they will concentrate more on the gameplay, and I also think it's probable because they are losing costumers to Konami's ultimate football games. :)

The only thing that does my head in is when people think that ISS and PES are still the same thing. They are now totally different as Konami still own both, but Major A make ISS, which is fairly poor but still better than FIFA, and the genius that is KCET make PES/WE, which is the greatest series of console games ever.

How can you compare these to games?

Fifa is just an simplistic arcade game that is more worried about its menu and music than than its gameplay. Has been crap since fifa 95 atleast. The players feel like there all on rails its awfull...there is no skill in this game, every team you play feels the same

And Pro evolution soccer is a soccer simulation.. That tries and manages to capture every little detail/tactic/imersivness of the actual game of football.. so what if it has less teams? all the important ones are there.

who wants to play with 20 teams that are totally **** and are no different but in name to eachother anyway?.oh please let me play with fiji and san marino..NOT! fifa can take its multiples of amature teams and stick them where the sun dosnt shine.

Its impossible to compare these to games?.. EA as always knows there game is seriously flawed when compared to pro evo or for that matter the iss series, they just know they can sell the same old **** to the same people.... stand up for yourselves and dont buy into this rubbish

Take fifa 2002 wtf is that mode of play about letting you qualify for the worldcup.. and thats it?.. having to buy the official worldcup release to play the tournament? is that some kind of joke? that for me sums up EA and its fifa series...

As for iss2 on the xbox.. its awfull, a bad conversion.. by far the worst ive seen of the iss series on any format.... but **** happens. Dont think ive seen a review anywhere that would tell you otherwise

I'm amazed at the inability to read people have. All the information Lui needs is in one of the posts in this thread.

Lets be simple,

Konami has TWO development studios producing soccer games, KCEO and KCET. KCEO made ISS98, ISS and ISS2. These are all inferior to the games made by KCET; ISS Pro Evolution (PS), ISS Pro Evolution II (PS), and Pro Evolution Soccer (PS2).

What you want is a KCET game (anything with "evolution" in the title). The next such game is Pro Evolution Soccer 2, due in this country (Australia) around about September/October. It will be released for the PS2.

So if you can't wait until then, buy PES. If you can wait, buy PES2 when it comes out in a couple of months.

Those people who have a mod chip, you are lucky, you can get the original Japanese games, which are part of the Winning Eleven series. Basically, PES = WE5. PES2 = WE6. It's not quite that simple, because the world release (PES games) usually have extra development features, but it's the same engine and the same technology.

Konami seem to have absolutely no clue as to the marketing for their games, as evidenced by the total confusion surrounding their ISS brand.

Clear .. as mud?

Hard to believe... sure you played PES??
How long did you even play it??
Do you KNOW how to play PES??

Just hard to understand...

Yeah, people have different opinions and standards, but if you really KNOW football, too me PES/WE is THE GAME~

- the ability to pass into spaces
- build up plays
- hi thru-balls
- the 1-2's
- dribbling by defenders using balance and change in direction (no stupid special moves!)
- player animation, shooting animation, header animation, falling animaiton, goalie animation.. animation everything!
- shooting physics
- ball physics
- free kicks
- a whole lot variations in making goals

etc......

true, not a perfect footie game, but almost there....
I mean ANY Fifa can't even compare with all above of PES/WE.

Lui~
Did you reckognize any of the above??
Cuz if you didn't
You gotta give it another chance....

hchu, I wouldn't worry too much about Lui's comments.

Anyone who says that FIFAxx is better than PEx is not basing that on football merit. This is the truth, becos if you have kicked a ball in your life, you'd choose PEx as the better _football_ game.

However, if you don't want a true represtation of football (I mean, what is real life for right?) or if you don't want a pure football game (just something that looks like it) or you are more concerned with updating kits and all the other stuff, Fifa is your game.

If you want to coach/train/play as international players against other internationals, PEx is as close to real life as you are ever going to get.

Can't stop the rush...

Of course~!!

Even if its a demo, you should know PES is a different game and that it means FOOTBALL the moment you make your first pass...~

Don't know how much you could do with a demo, but there's a lot in PES/WE.

- First its got tactics that WORKS
- A whole lot more depht in player attributes, team strategy etc...
- Each team plays and feels different!!
- Great Master League mode (that includes training, transfer, 3 divisions!!, different cups and tournaments, team kit and flag edit center etc...)
- Fairly addictive training mode~ (Luv the free kick challenge)

There's much more... just can't explain it all.
You should just go and play it than listen to me talk.

Don't know much about PES/WE sites. You really don't need to visit sites like you would if you were playing FIFA.

You'll actually spend more time PLAYING THE GAME.

I mean, how funny is it see everybody who play FIFA always have to come up with a gameplay patch, new pitch patch, ad board patch, kits etc??? Isn't it the gamemaker's job to create a game that do not need extra patches to improve it???
Just thought it was pathetic [don't want to be too offensive^^']

Anyways, here's the only site I know that is, at least, some worth for visiting.
http://www.thps-network.com/videos/gallery.cgi?Category=100016

Good luck with your encounter with PES~

I just bought PES and I'm converted. FIFA has rather sluggish gameplay and there's no real thought to the game.

In PES you have to build up the play from the back and think about who is available. Success is rewarding and you get a great sense of acheivement. You can score more impressive goals and there seems to be no repetetiveness to the gameplay. Every game is different.

You need skill to pull of great moves and free kicks and timing is a key aspect of every match. It's as close to real football as you can get.

FIFA is just what football would be like if it was Americanised.

I have no hope Lui will ever appreciate PES, because his name is Dutch for 'lazy' :D
I think he orginally comes from Holland according to his nickname 'Orange', so he might indeed be lazy :D
Lui, you need to go to the training-ground (if available in the demo) and practice on those nice features BEFORE you really start to appreciate the game.
If you started from scratch and you all of a sudden plays that hard demo you probably will loose interest.

If I was to give one tip for improving any game's gameplay, it would be the full use of the controllers analogue ability (in directions, passing and shot power)- as in FIFA WC2002

Argh~~!!!

Do I hate people bragging about the analogue control of FIFA and raise it above PES/WE!!

WTF is the point of having analogue when the freaking game itself is SOOOO scripted, ball physics STILL herendous, and the AI outside somewhere having lunch at Taco Bell???
[and I am not exageratting
]
If thats all you could do with analogue, I'd rather stick with PES/WE's 16 direction control... cuz I almost never felt scripted... almost never seen any awkard player animation's reaction with the ball physics, and I still make a WHOLE LOT MORE different kinds of GOALS...and thats even after 8 months of playing or so!!!

Physics of the ball? PES feels like the ball's a stone to me. Let's just leave each other be; I enjoy the feeling of the ball physics in FIFA, some of you obviously don't see the same things I do in it.

PES fans seem to be heavily influenced by discrepancies between what's on the screen and what 'should' happen. I admit PES has got it spot on with how accurate each interaction with the ball is, but none of the motion is motion captured, so what you get is a really realistic 'aesthetically pleasing' model of a football player.

FIFA wc2002 is motion captured, but it could be played with stick-men for all I care, it's not really about player-ball interactions for me. FIFA is about THE ball, and where you want it to go. Do it right and it goes there, do it wrong and you make a mistake. And hey, use some imagination; just because the manual says that a button does shoot or pass, doesn't mean that it's exclusive- bend the rules a little; it's a lot more satisfying than pressing 'through ball' at the right time- again that's just my opinion.

Why is it that since PES came out, you've all decided that there is only one way to write a football game. Fair enough there's good points about it, but they don't have the same value to everybody.

How is FIFA's ball physics acceptable when the ball still moves on its own. [Ball will be behind the player either when dribbling or shooting... and the ball STILL magically comes forward]

It still has AMAZING acceleration..?? [a shot will hit the post at 50mph and deflect back at amazing 100mph!!?? ]

And if you're talking about wc2002, wuts with the mind breaking slinky @ss whooping curves on shots??
You shoot with ball hitting the same part of your foot and still could curve it both right or left and that too 10times more than Dunga did with his amazing freekick in the '94 wc.
Oh, and did somebody forget in wc2002 the ball has a built-in mind of its own?

And you compare that to PES/WE???

Also, wuts wrong with aesethically pleasing modeled player animations??? How else would you do it?? Make crappy looking animations??
I say its WAY better than not being able to motion capture every single possible situation and having to make awkard trasitions inorder to make the game flow(?)....???

Personal choices... I repspect.
But... sometimes its just too much...

Were not deciding that PES/WE is the only way how a Football sim should be.
But just can't help comparing FIFA's poor ball physics [though, greatly improved compared to prev FIFAs] and AI etc... cuz its TOO EVIDENT!!

I mean.. you play it..and see things happen infront of your eyes that don't in a game that wuz out for years.

How else are we supposed to react??

EVERYBODY KNOWS (INCLUDING EA who admited it, that the games last year were crap, but they were aiming for a different, low end market. they then realised ppl r more sofisticated nowadays so they have really improved for fifa 2003. I respect PES totally, but I honestly think Fifa 2003 beats it by a long way.
Just play world class mode properly and feel what I feel.:)

PES/ISS just hammers FIFA into the ground then elbows it in the face Shearer style.

What makes it so good? Realism. Players have confidence.

Want an example? After some typical Newcastle defending, My toon side went 2-0 down to some soft (and I mean soft!) goals. We battled for a way back and confidence started growing in my side. With 10 minutes to go, Shevchenko hammers a one in to give us a shout. At that point Lazio went pear shaped. We hit an equaliser with 5 minutes left and the defence was completely rattled!

To cap off a canny comeback, Raul scores a late winner to give Newcastle the points. With the Everton result a couple of hours before, I reckon it's a case of art imitating life.
